This is not new news, but Rupert Murdoch's News Corp intends to start charging for the online versions of The Times and The Sun and other newspapers, and threatens legal action against news providing sites such as google and BBC who "steal" the content for their own news services.

Where one leads the others are sure to follow. I subscribe to the paper Daily Telegraph, which must have a huge carbon footprint, especially at weekends. In theory the online version should be ideal, and much less wasteful, but I find it less than satisfactory - reports and photos are cut down - and unless it was headline news it's almost impossible to find anything archived.

Which do you prefer - paper or online news - and (I suppose it depends on how much) but would you be prepared to pay for the latter?

I wouldn't pay to read a paper online Ron. I much prefer to read some thing in my hand than on a screen. If I couldn't buy a paper I'd just make do with the TV and radio news.

I subscribe to The Times, paper version, and wouldn't dream of paying for online access - reading a Newspaper is a completely different, and much more enjoyable, pastime compared to online.

Definitely not! Like Helen, I'd rather have the paper in my hand than try & trawl my way through a paper's website. Which often isn't very easy if you're looking for something specific, at least that's been my experience when I have used newspaper websites.
I buy as little as possible online as it still seems far too easy to be ripped off anyway.

He's got a cheek, that Murdoch. No doubt he's furious at the BBC, ITV and every other newspaper "stealing" the soldier's mum story from The Sun today and giving it lots of free publicity.

And no, I won't be paying for an online paper although I recognise that, really, there's no reason we should get something for free just because it's on the internet.

I wouldn't pay to read an on-line newspaper- because it's not a nice experience to read that amount of stuff on-line, and there's nowhere to scribble on the crossword. Also I like to yell out interesting stuff to hubby ... has yours got this in it.... etc etc... and when I get stuck on the hard crossword, I shuffle across the sofa , lean on hubby's chest and say , I've left a few of the easy ones for you- then he'll make me feel useless by doing them really quickly..... you can't have that experience on-line.

Again the Murdoch guys are off their rockers. Paying to read a newspaper on line? Barmy, like the Suns' backing of David Cameron & taunting Gordon Brown for having poor eyesight

I'm with Toggy... I don't read any newspapers and certainly wouldn't bother squinting at an online version.
The odd TV news programme, Question Time, Mark Occomore, Razz

This Week and HIGNFY is more than enough!
