I'm surprised that mark hasn't brought us the story from the National Archives.

Apparently the Prime minister of France approached the UK in 1956 for some sort of union in the Irish mould. Failing that, they would like to become members of the Commonwealth, with the Queen as Head of State. Sir Anthony Eden said 'Non' just like De Gaulle did when we applioed to joim the EEC
