After spending a week on the wonderful Isle of Islay back in May, I was invited back at the end of August by the folks that organise the island's annual fund-raiser airshow to do some photography.

The weather wasn't brilliant but everyone had a great day and plenty of money was raised for local charities. The airport staff looked after me as though I was one of their own - I made plenty of friends that day, and I've been invited back for 2010 - clearly they were happy with the shots I took for them! I've also been asked to help out with trying to get a few more display pilots to come along! Shocked

Baron Schroder (who's something like the 292nd richest man in the world, or near enough) owns a large house on Islay. He also takes people around the island on jollies during airshow day. I was lucky enough to go along for the ride.... here's a shot of Portnahaven and Port Wemyss on the Rhinns of Islay, together with Orsay island (the one with the lighthouse). Very Happy

This is Baron Schroder's run-about - a Pilatus PC-12.

I still keep in regular touch with my new-found friends on Islay, a really friendly bunch they are there.

Presumably all are from up that way. The only one I've seen is the Pilatus as that one is / was based down my way. Great pics once again.

The SE.5A belongs a strip near Glasgow, the rest are Perth-based.

I've really missed these photos. Welcome back Chersky and hope the Swine Flu wasn't too bad. You know, these photos both thrill and strike terror at one and the same time. Confused

Just looking at them again, shouldn't there be a pointy bit at the front of a couple of these planes? How does that stack up aerodynamically?

The first photo looks like it was sponsored by a 'cola' drink, and the pilot looks like he is smoking, though I guess it's the door handle! Laughing

I hadn't heard that John but why on earth would anyone want to go to Coventry anyway, let alone fly there..............or maybe it's to get out of Coventry............. Wink

That was a bit of a shocker when I read about it. I wonder what's happening to Air Atlantique and those wonderful vintage aircraft they keep there. My father & I flew in their DC-3 a few years ago when we were on a trip to Coventry. Didn't there used to be a lot of cargo flights as well?

Shame to hear about CVN closing - more jobs going. Too close to Birmingham and surrounded by vociferous NIMBYs to survive, though. I suspect BA employment prospects are shaky too, no matter which way the legal challenge re the proposed strike goes - and then last night Flyglobespan goes down the tubes.

Angus, I was able to take shots from the outside observation deck on top of the control tower at Islay. As I said, they were very nice to me!

Thanks for all the comments. There's another thread re a slightly more ambitious day out that didn't go quite as planned.
