Listening to the last WUTW this morning, not only do I feel saddened by the loss of his early morning presence, but the sadness is made worse by the knowledge of what is to replace him. What a colossal insult to the breakfast show listeners.

This morning’s show has a gentle pace, an eclectic mix of tracks which have meant a lot to him during the years, and which now have a fond place in my memory too. There are tracks by artistes of whom I had never heard before, but who now have a place in my CD collection. There’ll be none of that in the new format.

Listening to his unique take on life, his gentle banter with colleagues which somehow still seems to underline the respect in which he holds them, his self deprecating humour, you know that even if the nature of his replacement permitted such an approach, (which it certainly doesn’t) it could never be done with anywhere near the same panache.

Good luck Sir Tel, I’ll be looking forward to your new show.

I agree Minx, there isn't a cat in hell's chance of carrot top coming anywhere near Wogan's style which is surely what made it so successful..
Great choice of music this morning, presumably chosen by Terry? but why can't Radio 2 be more like this in the music it plays throughout the day??

I've just listened to his little farewell speech before the final record. Sums up the gentleman enormously. Whatever your feelings regarding his replacement, breakfast on R2 will not be the same any more.

Ken Bruce couldn't really come up with the necessary words. "Ladies and Gentleman, that was the end of an era" was close enough, though.

Best wishes, Terry.

What fantastic music Tel played - as SFF said, why can't we have more shows like that? No playlist at all - fabulous!

Thanks Sir Terry, it's been a lot of fun.

I liked his, or was it Sarah's comment "it's like hearing my obituaries - I'm not dead!" Laughing

A great show. I thought "That'll Do" by Peter Gabriel was going to be very last song, and how appropriate.

Then when he played The Party's Over I thought "not really". The breakfast show will become one long party come January whenever, (CE apparently knows of no other style) and I'm not much of a party-goer at any time, let alone first thing in the morning.

Not a lot to add to what's been said above. The music was Terry through and through, a few I'd forgotten but remembered the occasion once they were being played.

He's been there in so many ways in our lives, where have all the years gone to?

He'll be missed, that's the understatement of the day or even year.

Agree with all the positive comments about Sir Tel's finale but let's give Chris Evans a chance to show us what he can do before we knock him. I for one think he's done OK on Drivetime.

Ian.

It was amazing he managed to cram everything into 2 hours today - he did well to keep things moving along. It was great to hear him thank the gang in person, as well as hearing another Janet and John. The last 5 minutes were tearful, but at least after the curtain came down, we can say he bowed out graciously.

Sorry Ian but there is no giving Evans a chance as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather have silence than endure him.

Terry will be missed and it was a sad and emtional show. The last words were said from his heart. Obviously this thread looks like turning into an anti evans one again. Laughing

Well there was no need to encourage it. I was replying to Ian.

I did get a bit teary when Terry said his goodbye this morning, thankfully was not at work due to being snowed in.
It sounded like Ken was having a bit of a struggle to begin with too. Sad

Ken played 'Me and the Elephant' (the Gene Cotton song) sung by Terry, as his own tribute, and I thought that he sounded like Leonard Cohen! Shocked

I was pleased to learn the Elio Pace is to be Terry's MD on his new shows in February. I saw Elio with Albert Lee's band in Liverpool over The Beatles Weekend in August. He can play in any style on his piano and be convincing! Rock on, Elio!

I think Ken's was the most difficult job today. Just how do you follow Terry?

Ken was great, as ever (although Chris Evans clearly wasn't listening) and handled the first half-hour excellently.

Despite not listening for a while I'm glad I caught Wogan's final show as it was lovely. It was Simon Mayo's last regular show today but sadly I had to miss it. I'm looking forward to hearing him on Radio 2.

I agree but he did brilliantly, when I said he sounded like he was having a bit of a struggle I meant he sounded emotional but he pulled himself together superbly.

Can't have been easy for Barrowlands either, I saw him in the news clip and he looked really sad Sad

Absolutely great music on Terrys final show, it was like a reminder of how Radio 2 used to be and could still be.
Everyone at work was singing along to them, WHY can't they play stuff like this now?
Sorry to disagree with some others but Ken then came on and within half an hour had played, Beyonce, One Republic and Pixie Lott again, which brought me back down to earth with a boring bump.
Anyway, thanks for the shows throughout the years Tel, and good luck to Chris as he takes over.

You beat me to it, gaz.

I was about to say that we all agree that he did it brilliantly, and he did (although I felt that the last half hour overdid the melancholy and downbeat)

I love all that old stuff as well, but I don't really want it at that time of the morning, and I don't believe there are many who do. Go back to that style of Radio 2 and you really will see the audience figures dive.

But you probably wouldn't have that mix of tracks every day.

hi everyone, its been a while since i last posted.

really enjoyed the last show. like a few others i wish there was more freedom for the presenter to play his own taste in music but i'd just be happy if they varied the "juke box" a bit ( for example: queen had a lot more hits than crazy little thing called love and youre my best friend) i know its a royalties issue but surely there is some scope for variety??

its strange to think how long ive been listening to terry, first along with my dad, then on my own when he returned from the wilderness and finally with my own kids. like he said it really has been a generational thing with his show.

i dont think evans will be the same, obviously not, but then i wouldn't want him to try and do a woganesque show. could you imagine that? i shall give him a chance but mornings just wont be the same again.

it was a very humble man who signed off on friday morning and i think thats exactly the reason that so many people listened to the guy (personally only since 1977 - well i was only 9! lol!) i dont think that applies to evans!

i shall miss his brand of humour, his banter with the gang and his easygoing style.

i look forward to his new sunday show in feb.

have a good christmas everyone and a happy new year!
