Eurostar trains have been suspended after severe weather conditions in France and UK made the locomatives brake down and passengers stranded in tunnels for hours. They are testing a new snow shields which prevents water getting into the engines.

I can think of nothing worse than being stuck in a train, inside a tunnel, underneath the sea. Shocked

Agreed Minx - I have always said I would never go in that tunnel and times like this only reinforce that feeling.

For me, the only advantage of the tunnel is one of speed. Far better the half-hour journey by shuttle from Folkestone to Calais (in tunnel for 20 minutes or less) than the 90 minutes bobbing up and down on a ferry, plus more than that either end waiting to get on and off.

What I find incredible is that these trains, and the tunnel itself, seem to have no independent emergency power supply, for lighting and fresh air if nothing else.

I travelled on the Hovercraft once, it was awful, felt so BAD, my head was like bursting, you just had to sit and endure, you could not talk to anyone it just felt so bad, and women passengers were being sick in bags.

I have to go to France in Sept 2010 with Mrs W, that'll be first time I've driven to France and used the tunnel.

I only used the shuttle once, (if that is the one where you stay inside your car - on a train) but that tested my fingernails to the point of no return. We got used to the ferry because for a long time we had two dogs and it was the best way of transporting them, especially when Speedferries were operating and it only took 50 minutes.

I love ferries, me (blimey, echoes of "The Fast Show"!) - can't get enough of them. It's been a while since I was on a cross channel one, but I use plenty of Caledonian MacBrayne vessels each year plus Pentland Ferries' new catamaran car ferry. The tunnel, not so sure about. Was once on the Metro in Newcastle, between Jesmond and Haymarket when all the lights in the two carriages went out. Hurtling through a darkened tube at 60mph when you couldn't see infront of your face, never mind the passenger sitting opposite, was a rather interesting experience.

Have been on the Dover to Calais ferry and enjoyed it a good deal. Mrs W was already apprehensive about ever using the Tunnel and this has somewhat entrenched her views.

In the sixties I regularly took the 'Ferry 'cross the Mersey' and listened and drank and danced to Mersey Beat Bands! Laughing

I've only been on two ferries in my life, Isle of Wight and the one to Alcatraz..
If I ever did venture across to Europe, which is pretty unlikely, I don't think I'd be keen on using the chunnel.
