Severe Weather Warning For London & South East .
Councils apparently have 250 less tonnes of salt to grit our roads compared to a decade ago. Thats probarly those in the South havn't seen this type of weather for over 20 years.
http://www.bbc.co.ukweather/
____________
I wonder if Transport for London have been informed that they may not be able to move their buses like back in Feburary.

yeah we did, in fact here in sunny Dorset we had two bouts of heavy snow during Feburary this year, each lasting several days. I remember a trip to London in Feb this year, I was worried the train may be cancelled ( as they had been the two previous days)it was freezing, snow everywhere. The year before we had snow too, although not as much. Snow is nothing new, and 250 tonnes of salt isn't very much.

I know it was bad in Sussex. Just sad for those kids who would have enjoyed the snow on Christmas day. Some may still have it next week. |

We haven't had a substantial fall of snow here for fifteen years or so, which is just as well because what little that does fall usually causes everything to grind to a halt.
Councils are using lighter salt, with smaller grains, which they say is just as efficient, costs less and doesn't harm the environment as much
£50,000 will be saved by using smaller 6mm size salt crystals to treat the county’s roads when ice is expected to form. This salt can be used at lower concentrations, with cost and environmental benefits, and will be stored under cover at a new salt store which has been built at a central location to maximise efficiency. There will be no change to the county's gritting routes or frequency of treatment.
We shall see - the lighter the salt the quicker it blows away, I'd have thought. I use dishwasher salt on our drive - works a treat (the slugs probably don't agree, though)

Some snow showers here in West Northumberland (one in progress right now) but most roads seem passable.

Yep, had a slight covering here in Newcastle too. Estate roads still slippery but traffic moving just fine. Expecting more heavier falls tonight and tomorrow! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

A slight dusting overnight here in Cheshire, you can see the green grass still but it's not thawing at all even though the sun is shining.

The snow is quite deep here. We had intended going to my in laws to deliver their presents, I'm glad we decided not to. When I borrowed my hubby's wellies to stock up the bird table, the snow was deeper than the foot part of them. Its still falling too. I'm not clever enough to upload pictures! _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

5 inches here last night/this morning. impossible to drive in as no salt on the roads As it happened I had a phone call telling me not to go in as the office had lost power so that sorted that little problem out.
Next problem is if it is snowing on Tuesday how the heck do I get to the O2, should I set out now just in case |

Not a problem for me now Toggy, I decided not to go to see Macca in the end and put my tickets on Ebay for £175 buy it now.. I think they sold after about 15 minutes!
so that's a quick loss of just over £170 on my part _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I can't see us getting there either now as heavy snow is forecast, I would not risk it even for Macca. Will have lost about the same amount as you so we can commiserate together |

Maybe the concert will be available on DVD.. so we could see what we missed.
I haven't heard back from my buyer even though I sent the tickets special delivery. It did cross my mind that perhaps the buyer was a ticket tout or something, buying to sell them on at a profit. Still, I'm glad I got something for them. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Well in a matter of hours the forecast has changed from 'heavy snow' to 'bright sunshine'
I think we are just going have to see what the weather is like on Tuesday morning and decide then if we should go or not (hopefully we can!) |

We had about 3" or so overnight... it's still here, snowing again and freezing, so tomorrow may be fun.
My Newf "pup" didn't know what to make of it all and certainly didn't like the crunching noises beneath my feet this morning She soon had a small pile of it on her nose playing bulldozers.
A worry for us is that staff may not be able to get in..
( but they know we have a 4x4 ) _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Just driven to a nearby village, quite scary ice on the roads didn't risk over 40mph.
I was collecting 4 records won on ebay, all 4 for 93 pence, bargains are there if you use postcode/25 miles search _________________ -

Its quite bad here, over eight inches of snow. Spent an hour and a half clearing a route out of the garage to the lane, then couldn't get out at the end on to the main road. Its a slope and was a very icy, reversed back to house, lucky nothing else on the road. Then walked to work, arrived 1045 only an hour and a half late. Will probably have to do the same tomorrow and Tuesday! _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

Fun & games at Manchester airport. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8423442.stm
No snow on the surrey / Hants borders since Thursday night-into-Friday morning, indeed some lovely winter sunshine yesterday & today but berluddy cold and where direct sunshine doesn't reach roads & pavements are now icy and, well, dangerous! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Not long been back from a round trip to the NE from Cheshire. Atrocious conditions around Huddersfield tonight on M62. Definitely more snow here than the NE.

My sister was supposed to be travelling on Eurostar to Luxembourg today Needless to say she didn't get far, at least she did not get stuck in the tunnel for 10 hours and she will be getting a full refund.
Although there has been no snow here since Thursday night everywhere is still icy, the pavements are lethal. I saw some poor old lady struggling along in our village this morning. I was just about to go and help her but somebody else beat me to it while I was trying to cross the road.
It did make me wonder though how elderly people who can't get about very easily cope in this weather. |

Yes I did!
They were operatic 78s, nice colourful labels, Caruso, Nellie Melba.
Should have seen the fella's face when I said they were about 100 years old! But I quickly followed up saying they were NOT rare and that's why no-one bid high on them.
Our back patio is like a skating rink,. Had to lever the lid off the wheelie bin with a broomstick! _________________ -

Snow is nice when it falls, but it's dangerous afterwards when it freezes. I wish the councils would grit side roads and paths. It can be an health and safety issue. I wonder how many claims the local authorites get for this? |

We had a light dusting of snow overnight Saturday and then a couple more inches in quite a heavy shower yesterday afternoon. It froze immediately after both, so it's all crunchy, crusty underfoot, and the side roads are treacherous for cars. Dustbin day today (one day early) and I can't see it happening somehow. _________________ Ron |

More snow here last night, best temperature today was -1 and -5 at teatime, a lot warmer than Sunday when the worst temperature was -10. Snow now 10.5 inches deep. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

London was in Gridlock AGAIN Monday evening because we had a few flakes of snow. I blame the ineptitude of boris johnson.
Mind you, hearing Ken Livingston's "Dulcet" tones on LBC made me glad at least HE was no longer PM, slow journey home or not |
