Chris Evans told Radio Times that there may be an initial dip in the number of listeners of the flagship programme, but that the decrease will be short-lived.

_______________

There was a slight dip in listeners when he took over from Johnnie on Drivetime, but it soon came up. I guess there will be a dip and after 12 months there will be a balance. Chris will change the way breakfast was on Radio 2, but there are so many station out there and maybe some might find something new. Chris has started Breakfast in an age where Radio has changed since the days at Radio One. Radio 2 is the biggest national station, but also there are lots of Radio stations to choose from.

His audience may not nosedive, but prices for his autobiography have - it's now selling for under £5!

I was given a book about "how to produce a radio show" for Christmas (don't ask!!!) - apparently, it takes about 18 months for any radio station's listening figures to recover after a change of schedules and until then the figures aren't very accurate.

I will watch the next few RAJARs very closely!

Well if the sound quality of his morning show is anything like as bad as the much-hyped “Bye-bye Drivetime Hello Breakfast” fiasco, then he won’t have any listeners at all. It was like listening though stone walls to a drunken party three houses away. It was just plain poor broadcasting: no class at all, even after they managed to half sort out the sound about 20 minutes in, it still wasn’t good. It was so disappointing; we had had to turn it off. Craig Charles was on immediately before and was such a brilliant contrast with his understated one man and a microphone style.

Hello Icon. Your description of the show reminded me of the muddy sound on the US Bonds record 'Quarter to three.' Laughing

Are they getting worried? We are now getting 'bombed out' by trailers for his breakfast show. Rolling Eyes

Apparently we have to guess what will be the first record he plays. It could become as famous as Flowers in the Rain. Rolling Eyes

It sounds a little better on the iPlayer- they must have fiddled with it.

Maybe it's hormonal, maybe it's the phase of the Moon but I've gone right off Chris Evans, I think because he's lost his ordinariness- gone is the gravy- his show has become way too "Steve Wright", and Radio 2 isn't big enough for the both of them. It's time to stop feeding the monster.

Thanks, Minx, I do feel better. I never known so much fuss about what amounts to nothing more than changing shift- many hundreds of thousands of people do it every other week. And now we are supposed to be guessing what record he may play first.... Come Undone by Robbie? Same old Song by Pain? We'll be away on holiday so we'll miss the ... ohhh..... should I call it launch.... yes why not... most things that are launched, eventually sink, or get broken up for scrap... and there; is destiny in a nutshell.

Glad I will have to miss Tuesday, the show will be spent reading out self-congratulatory stuff from Evans' blog no doubt Rolling Eyes

So Wrighty has just said there will be a TV ad for Evans' Breakfast show too, "premiering" Rolling Eyes tonight after Eastenders..
Perhaps his face will appear on new TV Licences as well.

If this is the case who is joining me in complaing to the most senior person within BBC about a complete waste of licence fee payers money. Maybe the reason Ross wont get a new contract is because they need the dosh for the breakfast show budget, Appalled

I think I may have just caught the end of the Chris Evans promotional trailer on TV. Looking very paunchy and tripped out, he was whirling round in his chair with eyes closed and pointing into the distance.

Yup.... sounds just like my kind of breakfast programme Twisted Evil

Found this on another Internet forum, thought it had a very good point about Radio 2's jingles, a question raised previously at R2OK.

Quote:
There are new jingles for the start of the Evans show (not just resings). But not a new station package.

Radio 2 is always about evolution not revolution and launching a new breakfast show and a drive show in one day is more than enough change in one day. The existing jingle package is a big part of the station sounding familiar so with so many people changes I think they want to ensure people still feel comfortable with the station.

It is interesting that no one actually heard Tony Blackburn play Flowers In The Rain as the first record on Radio One. But everyone knows what it was.
The difference is that this time i am faily confident i will be listening & will actually hear it.
I hope he picks a good one...

It's a very curious trailer. It's trying to make out that Wogan's audience (and, indeed, Terry himself) will still love the new guy... and yet the one accusation that keeps coming up about Evans from his detractors is that he's shouty. So getting him to shout over "Twist And Shout" is an odd decision. I don't know who that's going to appeal to.

Just heard an item on the 3.00pm news on R2 that "Chris Evans says he is looking forward to taking up his new Drivetime show tomorrow". Shocked

Since when did this kind of trivia warrant news coverage?? This is blatant brainwashing of such proportions that you can't help wondering why the BBC feels it's necessary.

I sure I heard on this morning's R2 news that Chris was very nervous that the TOGS would desert him...

He mentioned COGS and CYGS on Andrew Marr's show this morning, so maybe he's hoping using some new acronyms will solve the problem? Smile

I had not intention of listening to this drivel, and the above comment is exactly the sort of stuff I would have expected if I had tuned in. I listened to 5 Live and I had to smile as they seemed to be having a dig at Radio 2 and their breakfast show, was quite funny!

I tried, I really did..gritted my teeth and listened to the first 30 minutes.
It's on in the background as I write, but all I can hear is "blah blah blah" "me, me,me" and inane audience participation.

Other stations are available - thank goodness.

We listened to about half an hour. It was dire, just an even more irritating version of Drivetime, the more so because my tolerance for 'contrived' radio is very low at this time of the day (and I'm an hour ahead of you!)

So we tuned in to 6 music for a while, then tried Radio 5, and then whilst trawling the press on our computers we came across some advice in the Times. Re-tune to the Alex Lester "Listen Again" feature. So we did that. It's OK, quite acceptable by comparison and tomorrow we'll try the Sarah Kennedy "Listen Again" feature. Unless of course the BBC tries to disable the function between 7.00 and 9.30 in support of their golden boy.

This will work for us whilst we're listening via our laptops, but when on the boat (where we listen via the TV) it will have to be Sean Keaveney I think.
Thankyou, my BBC. Rolling Eyes

'All you need is listeners' would be more apt if the headlines in The Times today are correct. 'BBC expects Evans to lose a million listeners'... and that's just today! Laughing
