First show: a very subdued Chris Evans, music was too predictable, and too many phone-ins and features, still too SHOUTY, TALKED OVER music, too much like his Drivetime, so not for me, I won't listen regularly.

I didn't listen and won't until he goes on a holiday, hopefully a long one and even more often than Terry did!

Completely agree with every point John. This is just Drivetime migrated to Breakfast and if you scan all the other Breakfast Shows they are just the same. Why can't R2 strive to be different in the mornings?

I tuned into BBC Radio Oxford this morning which is hosted by Malcom Boyden. Fairly dull but listenable and gentle on the ears.

Quote of the day from Malcom himself:

"People are tuning their dials a little to the right this morning and Malcom Boyden is the new Terry Wogan"

People who say that one show is not enough to judge CE by are wrong. This is the format that has been chosen - that is why they were "rehearsing it" last week - and it will stay whether we like it or not.
As much as Terry was egging the listeners to listen to CE he would have been choking on his snorkers this morning. It's just he's too much of a gentleman to admit it.

This is just wrong, wrong, wrong for R2 on every level and I will not be listening again.

So far, so good, as far as I'm concerned.

It will be different and will take a bit of getting used to but I'm happy to give it a chance.

Ian.

I thought the show was very good, with a nice variety of music spanning the decades.
Quite an impresive first show. I'll be listening. It will make a change from Magic

Thought it was good but I like Chris Evans, unfortunately Chris can't win - people won't give him a chance - he'll still pull in a big audience though

I think it will take a little bit of time to settle in but he will pull in big audiences no doubt. It won't be the same audience as Terry but a different group of people. I believe the same happened when he took over the drivetime slot. I also think that Chris needs to stop surreptitiously pandering to the TOG's whom he thinks won't like the show - if they don't like it Chris then there's nothing you can say to change their minds!

There are plenty of people on here who hated it but thankfully they have lots of other stations to tune into so will hopefully stop whinging on here!

Evans has been given plenty of chances: Radio 1, Virgin and now Radio 2...

However, he's still loud, shouty, egotistical and talks all over the songs- hasn't learned a damn thing!

And johnump:
I will "whinge" on here because that's why this site came into existence: R2 stopped all the message boards that allowed free speech.
Besides, Evans and his ilk are getting paid via my (and your) licence fee so I'll have my say thanks.

It was lovely to hear Moria Stewart on the 7am news she was a little nervous with some bulletins, but settled down. He opened up with two beatles tracks followed by old blue eyes. I hope the music continues the same, which I expect will. Yes he will talk over the songs, don't they all? Laughing It's his first day live on air ( although he did say it's his 7th show ) Looks like the opening practice show last Monday must of sounded like this one. He should of voicetacked the links in Laughing

I liked the jingles. I guess the show will take time to settle in about 6/ 12 Months before we get a true figure.

Drivetime-lite.... 20 minutes and I'm debating whether to hack my ears off with the carving knife. The suggestion to Listen Again to Alex sounds rather appealing just now - pity Bob is only on for three hours. At least Simon will be on in 40 minutes, sanity prevails. Wink

Hmm, well I thought some of the music was OK but for me there were too many phone-ins and a bit too much talking.
Liked Moira Stewart a lot though, I do like her voice.

Best wishes to Chris but going purely by today's program I can't see me being a regular listener. Probably back to Classic FM for me (does this make me a SOG? Laughing )

I wish............my radio came on (set to wake me up for Johnnie Walker's Breakfast Show) and this shouty voice attacked my ears, I went up and down the dial and couldn't find anything to listen to. Settled on Radio 4 but that's not my ideal start to the day and not the happy start we have become used to over the course of the last three weeks. Tomorrow I am going to try 5 Live, so we shall see!

I am sick of all these trailers and mentions of HIM too. Every presenter on Radio 2 must have been given a memo and told to big it up.

5 Lives isnt too bad but even they were having a dig at Radio 2 this morning. Are Radio 2 starting to become a laughing stock I wonder. Those with DAB or internet or are lucky enough to get the station, try My Gold Music. Much better that than the new Radio 2 BreakTRASH show

Yes, and Moira is a huge improvement over the intensley irritating male news reader they had on Breakfast before, Deddicote, i think it was.
Without him the show was already better.
The music was great. Nice features.

I enjoyed the show. I agree with the comments describing the show as a 'Drivetime-transplant' but I actually think Chris has been wise here. In all the work he's ever done, he's always tried something completely different with each new show, however Drivetime is well loved and familiarity probably helps the transition.

Saying that... I do wonder how long I will enjoy it for. Drivetime has been rather dull over the past year - and I have a feeling the current crop of features will wear thin soon. Either/or, 'hello/goodbye', are rather sweet natured but they're hardly interesting. The 'mystery guest' is a good idea (though surely that was Justin Lee Collins this morning... and if it's always a parody, it will become boring quickly). The best parts were when he was just himself, chatting with Johnny, Lynn & Moira. The chemistry was great - it sounded fresh.

Chris always hides behinds features and I do wonder if its these very features that shorten the shelf-life of his shows. If he's to last, he needs to strip down the show, and talk about what he knows. And for heaven's sake, give the paper review back to Sarah... what was that gabbling through the headlines all about?!

One other thing - the music was dead on for a first show. Predictable, yes, but all good records.

Phone-ins ? Oh - please don't tell me he has on-air chats with his listeners ? For me, that clinches it.

I have to admit that last week I was hoping that a) he'd try and tone/turn things down a bit and b) not transplant Drivetime to the Breakfast Show. After watching the interview on the Andrew Marr programme, I tried to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, putting myself in the shoes of someone who hadn't heard him before and Listen-ed Again with that in mind. Still couldn't get past about 20 minutes, though.

I guess I'm just not able to enjoy his style of presentation. I don't wish him ill, it's just that I can't sit and listen to him.

I will give him another couple of weeks at least and see if he calms down a bit. Given that it is a new show it was bound to be a bit me me. yes it was lively but that's Chris, some people like it some don't.

Music was good though, nice to hear Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen.

I agree the Today prog is not an ideal way to start the day. Hearing John Humphries yelling bad temperedly at political leaders before the first cup of coffee?

I thought there was a good musical selection, too.
Moira was a good replacement for Dedicote. I found him OTT & irritating. Also, with Terry's show i used to switch off when they went into these long jokey conversations & Janet & John stories i never followed.
On the plus side Terry was great at finding & promoting new talent. He brought Beth Nielson chapman to the attention of many, also eva cassidy.

As to the new show, i quite liked it. Chris a bit shouty at times, but ovderall good.

My advice to Chris- calm down a bit, and NO Janet & John stories, please.

If you noticed him on the webcam it's slightly changed from the usually shirt and tie when we Terry was presenting it to a jumper. Very laid back show now.

I like the 2 songs on from 7. Maybe the listener should choose them?

I gave him over half an hour of my time yesterday, and I can never get that back Crying or Very sad

I am trialling alternatives, it'll take a while to settle on one, but there is now another no go area on R2, along with 2-5 and Alan Rolling Eyes Carr.

I was never the biggest fan of Terry's show, finding it too waffley for me in the morning. But this goes in the opposite direction - too much going on, dashing from one feature to another.

The main failing is that it's just like Drivetime and, let's be honest, that was getting time for shakeup anyway. Gobstobbers? Top Tenuous? Good, Bad, Ugly? The Ginger one is all out of ideas.

As for Moira Stewart... well, newsreading has moved on since she started on the news and the best I can say is that she's marginally more competent than Fenella Fudge...

Sorry, Guys. but I did my best. I managed Moira, 2 Beatles, and the voice of Evans before I turned off.
I also tried on the way to work, but he started talking over records.

While I'm on Days it'll be KCFM on the way in.

BTW Simon Mayo's not bad

Maybe I've listened to Radio 5 too often lately but I get the feeling some newsreaders (eg Moira and, actually, Dedicoat) are simply reading the words put in front of them with very little understanding of what they actually mean.

Listening to Chris' Breakfast show at leisure (I'm still down with the flu!) Surprised third day & he's got it just right. A wonderful show. As good as it could be. Certainly must be the best Breakfast show in the UK
