Freed from the need to keep Chris Evans' seat warm, we shall hopefully hear a more natural, less frenetic, Simon Mayo tomorrow.

I still have a feeling that he's just a touch too straightlaced, but then, following Wright and Evans who wouldn't be. We shall see.

Interesting interview in today's Telegraph
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/6952250/Simon-Mayo-on-the-move-to-Radio-2-and-his-new-Telegraph-column.html
He's going to write for them as well and I for one will look forward to that.

I think Simon will be well suited to the Drivetime slot.

It won't be quite so frenetic, fast faced as per the previous incumbent.

Hopefully the choice of music will be good.

I'll be able to listen to R2 in the evenings again - now if only someone could persuade Steve Wrong and his lackeys that they're past their sell-by dates, I'd be well and truly happy! Cool

Elementary science lessons, help with homework, a suitably nerdy competition (Ponchoons - guess the running times of records).

No shouting, Springsteen's Born To Run to start - yep, it's definitely Simon Mayo's Drivetime. Only managed to catch the first 45 mins so missed Amy Macdonald - she apparently supplied a large box of cakes.

Interesting hearing Simon mentioning about the support he's giving to Chris Evans. I think everyone at Radio 2 has supported Chris today. I wonder if they have been reading the MB? Laughing

I think Simon will be ok on Drivetime, nothing to worry about there.

Was actually spoiled for choice at 5pm tonight - do I listen to Drivetime, PM or Drive? (Plumped for a bit of each, and "Just A Minute"!)

He started on BBC Radio Nottingham, in the days when I used to listen to it for things other than just the snow and earthquake reports. He's always been good, just not charismatic, if that is what people want.

I submitted a reply to his blog when he wanted the first song on to feature a trombone - I wanted Dexy's Midnight Runners' 'Dance Stance'!

They played Jackie Wilson's 'Reet Petite'.

Drivetime is good for me, but my hubby says Simon Mayo is not playing enough music! He is off in another room listening to Radio 4's PM programme.

Her Town Like Malice was awful.

I do wish they wouldn't mess up with these long term promotions. I remember the Sold on Song one from a few years ago was just as bad.

To be quite honest I'm not remotely interested in the British Song Book. All the songs which featured on the decade shows the other week were IMHO already vastly overplayed on Radio 2 anyway. A half hour show once a week for 6 months would be okay but not bits of it foisted on the daytime shows or 3 hours sessions please.

Not keen on the first song bit either.

To me it should be the news, a jingle then straight into the first song to set out the score then the presenter can do what he wants.

H

PS whatever happened to the DJ, or presenter as they like to be called these days, actually using his brain to entertain us rather than have us entertain him? I thought he was getting paid for that. We certainly aren't !

That's what everyone else does. No harm in doing it slightly differently. It's a nice, simple idea to stimulate audience interaction before the show by getting them to suggest the first track. Of course, getting your choice played is going to be rather less likely than if, say, you were contributing to Alex's Listener's Library at 3.45am.

Today's is a challenge:- Thursdays opening song. The terms and conditions are out. A big hit needed of course and with a GONG somewhere. Just please NOT Bohemian Rhapsody.

We all complain that music choice is always all the producer's; don't let's now complain about the public's.

Ron

I'd rather have the producer's or the presenters choice for openers.

How often do you hear the same old overplayed songs on the request shows? How often do people moan about them on here and other boards?

In any case I'm sure they decide what they want on the show (like the all request Friday etc) and only pick the requests for them. It happens on CIN, that I know!

H

Off the top of my head I'd suggest Kites, can't think who sings it right now but can hear it in my head!

Fair enough, H.

So we've had Born To Run (his choice), Reet Petite, and Street Life - that could have been worse: at least it wasn't Baker Street or Time Passages.

Kites would be good - Simon Dupree. Keep your fingers crossed. Smile

Not keen on it, one of those songs that you either love or hate nothing in between.

Too much interaction on everything these days IMHO!

I'm so relieved that I can listen to Drivetime again. I do find the "spots" on the show, as on most programmes, rather irritating but at least we now have a presenter that is a pleasure to listen to - IMHO anyway.

Helen, there's plenty of stuff I'd love to hear on the radio but I'd never dream of suggesting it since I know the tracks would never get played on the request slot - they're simply not mainstream/playlist-friendly enough.

If you're going to have a request show, make a rule that they have to play something that hasn't been featured on a daytime playlist for the last five years! I can see that happening - not! Wink

Nice to hear Reg Presley on Drivetime this evening.. whilst talking about his upcoming 60s combined tour I thought he came across as a very polite, natural fellow.. easy on the ear - despite his heavy Dorset? accent Laughing and his 80 fags a day!!! ( funny how a heavy accent disappears when singing )
One thing bugs me however, he never mentions the Jimi Hendrix version of "Wild Thing"? not that I've noticed anyway..
I loved Wild Thing when it came out and, being in a band at the time, we learnt it straight away. But when I saw Hendrix playing it at the Monterey festival... I was genuinely blown away - and quite shocked at seeing his guitar burn!
Loved the Troggs but for me, Hendrix made Wild Thing! Cool

I much prefer the slot where you guess the length of tracks. Confessions belongs in the past.

I was a bit dismayed that two of the three confessions "reprised" this week involved cruelty to animals. I found them long, and not particularly funny.

I suppose Confessions was popular, and his listeners then are probably his listeners now, with new tales to tell. The guess-the-length-of-the-track thing was so nerdy as to be of limited appeal, and Mystery Voice seems to be a staple of the commercial stations.

I don't get to hear the show much, but his fortnightly column for the Daily Telegraph's Weekend is good. Just a blog, really, but he writes well.

TBH anything that Simon does is fine by me. It's such a relief to be able to listen at that time of day again.

This show will find it's feet and get rid of the features that don't work and bring in new stuff all the time. His predecessor was completely unlistenable not only because of who he was but the show would always start with the same thing and it carried all the cringworthy stuff such as the kids fanfare from it's inception to it's death.

On the few occasions I've caught snippets of the new breakfast show it just reminds me of why I could never listen to Drive for the last, well, it seems like an eternity. Johnny (sp?) Saunders has reached excrutiating levels of "sycophancia" and is in real danger of turning into another of CE's 90's Yes-men. Lynne Bowles seems disinterested and almost mocking and Moira Stewart (sp?) was the wrong choice completely.

I'm just glad to have an old friend back at Drivetime. It's like he's never really been gone and maybe a sign that R2 will finally start using tried and tested professionals to do the job
