What is it with Phil Swern and Beatles albums? Yet again a glaring error.

I Wanna Be Your Man was on 'With the Beatles' which was NOT their first album! The same error that was on the edition of SOTS that went out on the Beatles Weekend.

The best start to a Saturday.

Surprised, however, that they didn't give Peter, Paul and Mary a full 3 in a Row.

Quite a quick replay for the Gary Lewis one. Looking back on here I see it was on as recently as 29 August.

Fascinating to hear the Kinks outtake of Dedicated Follower of Fashion but probably for the best that this wasn't the final version.

Stones' I Wanna Be Your Man is totally different to and in my view better than the Beatles' own account.

Ian.

I agree Ian, the Stones version (which was played) is better, but why can't they get it right? It's not as if they made that many albums!

H

PS I thought I'd heard that Gary Lewis recently as well.

The Stones apparently recorded it in just two hours - the Beatles fiddled about with it over five sessions before hastily finishing it off before release of the LP barely one month later.

"The manager of Acker Bilk writes to remind me that Decca has released a CD "Boaters Bowlers and Bowties" Shocked

Considering the number of listeners who are unsuccessful in getting a mere mention, asking for a free plug of an expensive and highly profitable compilation of 50-year old recordings is a little cheeky. He then played Chris Barber's version of Bourbon Street Parade - I remember answering a question about Bilk's version which he played not so long ago.

As a massive (some might say obsessive Very Happy ) fan of The Beatles I have to agree..I love the version by The Stones.

I heard the sad news on local radio the other week that Clinton Ford had died..(love Fanlight Fanny) and saw on-line Brian Matthew was the best man at his wedding.

Has he been mentioned at all by Brian? I was wondering if I missed it.

Hi Becky,

I haven't heard Brian mention Clinton Ford but I haven't heard every show for the past few weeks, so may I've missed it too. Sad news.

I haven't heard Brian mention the news either. Could be another result of a gap between recording and transmission.

Didn't pick up any reference to Clinton Ford this morning.

For me today's highlights were Matt Monro, the Searchers and Helen Shapiro.

Have recorded the first part of Brian's new Friday evening series on bands but haven't heard it yet.

Speaking of PJ Proby, I saw him tonight (Sunday) in the James Burton Concert in New Brighton (you take a Ferry across the Mersey!) He duetted with Chris Elvis Clayton on 'American Trilogy' from opposite sides of the stage. It was very effective. Mr Burton was seated at a stool for most of the proceedings having had an operation on his shoulder a week ago, but his fingers still did their magic! So good to hear 'live' those familiar guitar licks from the Elvis, Ricky Nelson, John Denver and Emmylou Harris records. Very Happy

A friend of a friend of a sister of mine (got there in the end... Very Happy ) lived with PJ Proby, for a while, back in the seventies......Hold Me is a great song!!

I always think of Ruby (Don't Take Your Love To Town) by Kenny Rogers as being later than the sixties...don't know why...

Didn't catch the whole of the show today, but it was good to hear "Some Velvet Morning" by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood.

I hadn't known that Gordon Waller of Peter and Gordon had died.

I can give Oliver Reed's record a miss though - never heard it before and don't care if I don't again. Crying or Very sad

SOTS is still not hitting the spot for me these days. I wish they would feature a full American chart from a week in the sixties occasionally like they did when Roger Bowman was the producer. Rolling Eyes

Gordon Waller died in July of a heart attack at the age of 64. My dad always thought he was underrated as a guitarist. To be fair, they did mention it sometime ago.

Very nice of Brian to apologise for losing a letter but I wonder why they didn't stop the recording while he found it. Or maybe the programme is live after all.

Don't think they'd ever get away with the lyrics of Memphis, Tennessee, today.

Didn't hear all of it today, was in the car on my way up to your neck of the woods Ian.

It's not live but it must be recorded as a whole show as opposed to it just being voice tracked. Rather strange that Brian should mention losing the letter though!

On another matter completely, can anyone remember when they stopped giving out shirts or T shirts when you had a request or 3 in a row played? I've been lucky to have had both, but after the giveaways had stopped.

The Syndicats' Crawdaddy Simone was new to me, though I'd heard of this in various Yes biographies.

Robert Knight's Love On A Mountain Top brings it home to me how weedy Sinitta's cover is - and SHE is a mentor on the X-Factor? Speaking of covers, the Bonzos showed they didn't think much of 'Bang Bang' besides Cher - their version is on the remaster of 'Gorilla'.

Just remembered from last week's SOTS, a couple of notables:-

'Send A letter To Me' by Freddie and the Dreamers, I think was the hard to find track. It was a B side of I think 'You Were Made For Me' and for some strange reason I remembered all the words, weird as I didn't particularly like the song. I suppose we played the B sides more when we were younger.

The other was 'Bobby's Girl' from Susan Maughan. Another 'knew all the words' and singing into a hairbrush song for me Embarassed . A local NE girl from Consett so massively popular up there.

H

PS not seen Ian round hope all well?

Thought this morning's selection was a bit Beta minus and leaned too heavily on the later part of the decade. And surely they could have come up with a better Frank Sinatra track than That's Life. But that's just my opinion and even a slightly below par edition of SOTS is well worth a listen. The specials over the next two weeks should be worth waiting for.

Much better music selection today and it was good to hear some lesser-known Christmas ones.

Even my Dad, regarded as a complete 'square' at the time, liked Maria Elena.

Looking forward to playing connections next Saturday.

Yes, a better programme than of late for me. However, have you seen the spelling of 'Aquarius' by the Fifth Dimension on the playlist? 'Come on' (pun intended) this is the BBC after all! Shocked

I wonder how the culprit would spell hilarious? Rolling Eyes Hillaireeuz perhaps?

Perhaps appropriately, there was some emphasis on the weather today, with snow, lightning and rain in the first hour.

The 'threatening' letter to the Collector made me lol.

Is it my imagination or is BM being allowed to give us more personal glimpses than was once the case? The story of the friendships arising from his evacuation to Lincoln during the War (presumably from Coventry) was quite touching.

Pleased that we finally got a tribute to Clinton Ford today.

Was having fun trying to remember the words to Scaffold's Two Days Monday (yes, it was spelt like that).

A usual, a brilliant start to Saturday.

Bobby's Girl always makes me think of the Smith's Crisps ad from the 80's with the potatoes singing 'We wanna be...Smith's Crisps'! When my ex-boyfriend worked for a construction company, one of his co-workers was called Chris Smith, so they'd be singing 'We wanna be...Chris Smith' at him!

And now I see Dannii Minogue's partner is called Kris Smith.

Bobby Vee's How Many Tears will always be 'the Jimmy Young song' to me thanks to Noel Edmonds's Misheard Lyrics spot, where it was said the backing singers sang 'Young Jimmy Young, Jimmy Young'!

LOL

Missed that part of the show and just checked out the playlist to have the same thought as you! I'd forgotten it was Noel Edmonds who started it all though. I'm sure I remember JY himself making a comment maybe after playing the song on his show!

Will have to Listen Again!

Laughing Nearly choked on my toast and marmalade.

Couple of old children's favourites in this morning - Babysittin' Boogie, although the version more often played here was by Ralf Bendix and Little Elizabeth with Werner Twardy and his Orchestra, which sounded more like a traditional English father/daughter.

I'm surprised that Mitch (Mister) Murray's Down Came The Rain can't be found anywhere - he appears to be right, though. If you're scouring the second-hand and jumble sales this is the CD to look for

It also contains such gems as Carbon The Copycat, Frankfurter Sandwiches, and Shocked Paddy Roberts' Ballad Of Bethnal Green.

Yes, rather curious. Surely BM knows better than his researcher on this and should throw duff gen into the bin. The same researcher got the wrong year for Brian Poole's Candy Man.

One reviewer said that Homburg put him in mind of Bach's Sheep May Safely Graze.

Personally I would need quite some persuasion to request Down Came the Rain but I agree that it should come out on a new compilation sometime.

I must have heard 24 Hours from Tulsa hundreds of times but still find it absolutely gripping.

Liked the Adam Faith B side but hope they'll flip it over sometime and play the underrated I Love Being in Love with You.

Sorry folks, I scanned the wrong sleeve, above - it's this one

It's an EMI 2-CD compilation from 1989, serial no EM1340; it's not the same as any of the ones listed at online sites today, although it may have tracks in common. It includes The Playmates' Beep Beep, The Southlanders' Mole In A Hole, and Jimmy Young's The Man from Laramie.

Jimmy Young's version of 'The Man from Laramie' always makes me laugh! The lyrics just sound so odd in his clipped British accent. viz:
'There was no cayoot who could outshoot...' Laughing

On the other hand Johnny Burnette's 'One Eyed Jacks' fair galloped along on SOTS today!

Briant, I reckon Jimmy Young's version of 'The Man From Laramie' was the one that was always being ridiculed on The Goon Show!

I also agree about the cockup with Procul Harum's 'Homburg' - surely this song influenced the Alice Cooper song instead of vice versa?
