Have to say - today's show was pretty awful. He sounded angry. He kept singing over the end of records and then saying "Look, that's singing, i'm not talking". He acknowledged people had criticised him for this and then said, "I don't care". He sounded arrogant and past-it, and I never thought I would say this. I'd always been pro-Chris but this week is zapping the support out of me. Looking at his tweets, he's feeling it too - most of his replies are in defense of his show format.

There's one last hope... that he'll turn up next Monday and say "You know last week? Let's forget it and start again". If I could give him advice it would be to relax the pace, replace his inane features with things that stimulate and more importantly to give us more of him and his banter. He's starting to become cringe-worthy by needing to fill a show with ridiculous slots. 'Slots' that Wogan used to make frequent fun of.

For some reason, I've been awake earlier than usual these last few days and heard the last three quarters of an hour or so of Sarah's show.. good isn't it? pity she's not on over the weekend.

But this morning as the dreaded 7am approached, I lazily scanned through the available stations on my bedside radio.

Having heard at least the first part of the three Chris Evans shows this week, I just cannot listen to any more kids, sickly sidekicks laughing at anything he says, Moira sounding like a fish out of water and trying to sound like she's enjoying the stupid games or thickos ringing in with boring stories.

But.. what else is there even remotely as good as Wogan or Walker?? nothing for me at least. I can't stand local stuff and those "Pearl and Dean" adverts and most of the other stations I found had the same style of sqwarky amateurish presenters..
Classic FM bored me to tears after 10 minutes as did Radio 3 and 7..

I'm listening to Magic at the moment.

I feel very let down by the BBC on this occasion, even more so than when Drivetime was destroyed. It really is a case of nowhere to go for me at the moment.
Shame on you BBC. Sad

I sympathise Santa. My solution is to get up immediately and put Sarah on the i-player in the kitchen. Of course this depends on the time of rising - today's programme wasn't available so I've switched to Alex's shoe.

Santa FF has put it so well....you speak for a great many people. I've been listening to one of the local "hits" stations on DAB , but the adverts drive me mad (love the reference to "Pearl & Dean - that really brings back memories!)

Shame on you BBC, in triplicate!

I agree SFF. At the moment we are listening to Alex Lester on Listen Again, and during the JV programme we are listening again to SK. But we feel a bit adrift for the moment and I hate all this chopping and changing.

In the UK we used to leave the radio on all day in several different rooms so we could go about the house and still have continuity throughout the day. (We just used to lower our levels of volume/concentration between 5.00 and 7.00pm, and in any case my endurance limit for CE is much higher at that time. )

When we get back I guess we will have to find a permanent alternative so that we can resume our normal pattern of listening. R4 would be my choice, but my husband likes to listen to music and I wouldn't relish a music-free day either. So we'll trawl around the local radio programmes I guess, until we find the one.

But it just seems a shame that one change in timing is going to despatch us from R2 after years of listening. And before the pro-ginger ones start complaining, please note I said "timing". He could have carried on doing his thing at Drivetime and I would have carried on sublimating it - something I can't do at this hour of the day.

Santa Fe, there was a thread, I think it was at BBC, suggesting that the BBC start another radio station for those not catered for by the current Radio 2.
My suggestion is that such a station should be on the model of Melody Radio, which was an ILR station in London that was later mutated into the more Generic Magic.
Melody concentrated on Melodic music from across the years, & a fair dose of show tunes. I was sad to see it go.
There is a huge market not catered for in the current line up of Radio Stations.
Such a station would, I suggest, have a far wider appeal than 1 Xtra or 6 Music which the Beeb spends loads of money on. 6 Music is basicly XFM & 1 Xtra is doing the same thing as the numerous commercial stations playing that type of music, only to a smaller audience.
But no one is broadcasting the stuff Melody did.

I suggest Desmond Carrington for the mid evening slot- 6 to 9PM. Sarah Kennedy could take over Breakfast - 6 to 9AM.
I like both Chris & Sarah, so i;d probably be flicking between the two

Leaving aside the fact that your post makes no sense, if you have been following you would know that I tried and gave it a real go, but I cannot stand Evans or his idea of what makes a Breakfast show.

I am really pleased that you feel the show is "brilliant".

Spot on, Nick. I've tried to give Evans a go on the way to work this week and was impressed to hear such a good mix of music, but the talking over was something you'd hope he'd have stopped for this big gig. The features are mostly bog standard - I think the Guardian's radio critic said Evans should loosen it up a bit more. Sure, but don't go and play less songs only to talk over them after 2 minutes. Time will tell, but Simon Mayo's had less pressure on him this week which has transpired into a much better start than Evans.

Glad to read you think Evans is arrogant and past it Cool Join the club!

As I've alluded to in several recent posts though not necessarily suggested out loud, I was prepared to cut CE some measure of slack with the new show, and even tried to give him the benefit of the doubt this week. I think though that Nick hit the proverbial nail with his "cringe-worthy" comment - this has always been the sore point re CE's Drivetime show for me, too many naff little features that make me immediately cringe and reach for the off switch.

I really thought that CE might make an effort to try something a little different on the Breakfast Show - not necessarily trying to imitate TW or JW's format, just a stab at something that stood apart from his previous efforts. Clearly that wasn't on the agenda. I don't want phone-ins, sycophantic ramblings or cheesy features - just music mixed with some light-hearted banter. I'm not getting it on R2 anymore, where do I turn to now?

If ever I had the slightest thoughts about listening to the new breakfast show, how he behaves on all these trailers (especially on tv) would put me off for starters.

Chris on this morning's show..... " if the people won't change - change the people!" Cool

I had to smile later when, after he spilled the beans that Fern Britton is taking over Paul O'Grady's slot - "It's a big secret" "It's OK said Lyn, "Nobody's listening" "That's what I've heard" says Chris! Laughing

POG is being heavily promoted at the moment (heard on Simon, Janice and Alex), so I don't think he's going anywhere soon.

That was exactly my impression - he gets people to ring up and say "Goodbye" Rolling Eyes - why would anyone bother and what is the point?

I knew he was devoid of original thought, but not being able to say goodbye is rather pathetic!

BBC, admit you've made a mistake.

Far be it from me to take a defensive stand over Evans, but I'm not sure about the view that "Chris needs to change this, and change that". It's a bit like putting a man onto a battlefield and tying one (if not two) arm(s) behind his back.

If Evans were to take all the bits out that annoy me, ie the phone calls, the interviews, the gimmicky spots, the shouting, the talking over records, the me-me-me...... what would be left? For me, a very unlikeable, bland and boring presenter, as opposed to a very unlikeable manic and irritating presenter.

Evans' style is the product of his own personality, brash, loud, self-centred. He may agree to tweak this, tweak that but in essence it's still going to be pretty much the same thing, and probably something that he's not entirely comfortable with .

The BBC thought the listeners wanted this kind of zoo format first thing in the morning. Why they should think that, God knows - I don't recall that there was a general outpouring of discontent about the previous breakfast show. In their wisdom they have decided that the demographic has changed and have produced their chosen contender for that demographic. To start trying to mould him now into something he is not seems hardly fair and leaves him in danger of falling short of everyone's expectations.

I've never been particularly keen on Evans (especially All Request Friday: "tell us your favourite songs and then I'll shout all over them") but I've been really surprised at just how ropey the breakfast show is sounding. All the fanfares and talk of multiple dry runs in the weeks leading up to launch, and it turns out all that's on offer is a reheated version of Drivetime.

Here's a thought: Chris Evans does what Chris Evans does, and when it's fresh, it works really well. The wheels start to fall off when the same old schtick is dressed up as something new. Look at his TV history.
Minx wrote:

I doubt if they've put Evans here for reasons of demographic change. I suspect the thought process was much simpler: "Help! The legend that is STW can't go on forever. We will need a major personality to fill the void when it happens. Chris Evans is a big name (and, back then, hungry for radio work) so we'll hire him on a promise that he'll inherit the breakfast show." So they did and Drivetime has simply been Breakfast Show In Waiting. The time has now come, so the show is uprooted, lock stock and (features scraping the) barrel and slotted into place. But now, just as in the past with the TV shows, it's not smelling so fresh.

"Shouldn't that demented boy on Radio 2 in the morning be getting ready for school at that time?"

Thought it summed it up nicely. Smile

I've purposely held me tongue on here, and have tried listening.

I'm disappointed to say the least.

Positive comments; better choice of music, but that is subjective of course. Like Moira Stewart, think she's probably a lot more fun than her staid newsreader image suggests and she has a wicked giggle.

Three minute interview does have potential.

Negatives; I avoid commercial breakfast shows mainly because they have members of the public wittering on the phone, why make this the same? Chris doesn't just talk over records, he shouts over them, and I'm sorry but even though he's not as manic as he was on Drivetime it's just too loud and in yer face for me. Top ten tedious (as CE called it himself t'other day) is just that. And keep the kids off please!

Sounds just as bad as I expected - my attempt at listening on the first day hasn't been repeated. I wonder what the audience figures are?

MiS - They will always say the audience figures will decline as previous listeners to that slot migrate to other stations - especially when the new format is so different to it's predecessor. But they (the Beeb) will justify that by saying he will attract a new breed of listener as listeners from other stations tune to Radio 2 instead.

How the hell they think that will be possible when the parts of the show they play in the trailers are possibly the worst parts of the show.

Have the BBC not realised that Radio 2 listeners are very select in their taste? I gave Chris the benefit of doubt and tried to listen - great music when it's not being shouted over but very little else. If we don't like the format of a show or who it's being presented by then no amount of trailers will persuade us to tune in.

Fortunately for me my iPod contains some 7000 songs which is great for me to plug into the car HiFi en route to work but I'm afraid once I get to my destination I work in silence until 9:30 these days.

IMO Radio 2 redeemed themselves by giving us Simon for Drivetime but they could take it a step further by admitting their mistakes and getting rid of this eejit once and for all. I would have anyone for breakfast, figuratively speaking, JW, Stu Mac, even Richard Allinson which it pains me to say, just not Chris. It's not working is it BBC - admit it?

The trouble is they will never admit it. I have just emailed a complaint but making it a question 'If the listener figures show that more and more people are switching off the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, will you replace the presenter?'
If I get a reply I will post it on here!

I have trouble understanding why they want to replace the "old" listeners to a programme with "new" listeners? I admit I'm not in the first flush of youth but do hope to be around for a few more years yet! So why are these "new" listeners more valuable to the BBC than the "old" ones?

Doesn't make much sense to me either!

I just hope they feel equally enraged when the time comes for them to have someone totally unsuitable foisted on them.

I'm posting negative postings on the Evans blog. It really is a hoot that blog - nobody talks about the show! Laughing

By and large I thought the media reviews of the "new" show were quite generous. But this one caught my eye the other day and it summed it up nicely I thought.

I loved this line:

"He sounds funny, he even looks funny, but he's not funny."

Couldn't have put it better myself (and yes, I did try and listen between 0910 and 0930 this morning - lasted until 0918 and turned to R5Live for the next twelve minutes before KB took over).

Hi Guys & Gals

Long time no see Smile

How you all doing?

I agree he isn't right for breakfast I've tuned out.

I actually didn't mind his drivetime show, he was far more suited to that whether or not you do or don't like him. He is definitely not suited to a morning show it is a big mistake for what we like from R2, I think it is just another way of bringing them over from Radio 1 to make way for the youngsters over there. Sadly we are all getting older with no where to go Sad

Maybe there should be a Radio 2 take 2 station? Just a thought Smile
