Watched this show last night. I've got to say that whilst I'm not a fan of his on the radio, Dermot O'Leary did a very polished job of presenting the show, and not without humour either. Makes such a change when presenters don't feel they have to impose their personality on the proceedings. I read somewhere that he's very interested in being involved in political broadcasting. That might be interesting if he's given a chance, though if his Saturday pm artistes interviews are anything to go by, he'd need to smarten up his act.

Dermot's a clever chap, quick-witted and articulate when he wants to be, and he has forthright opinions, political and otherwise, which he's not afraid to voice, given the freedom to do so.

The trouble with the radio show is that he hasn't got a camera to play to, and he always seems to fawn and get tongue-tied when interviewing people and artists he really likes.

He has said in an interview for Radio Times that he's in talks with the BBC to present a political show -

"It won't be anything particularly serious," O'Leary said. "I won't be the man with the swingometer, but politics is a huge obsession with me, so I'm incredibly excited about it."

He did not consider himself a "classic, mainstream shiny-floor presenter", he said, despite having mainly worked on entertainment shows.

"I always try to bring a little bit of edge to whatever I'm doing, but at the same time I'm not a comedian," he said. "I'd love to do something that is documentary-based, but something slightly more than 'straight'."

That might be a tad difficult in the run-up to a general election, with all eyes on broadcasters to spot any infringement of (what they consider as) impartiality, and the Beeb probably wary of what the new Government will do to it.

Shouldn't have a problem interviewing politicians then Ron. Wink

Does he go and hug politicians that didn't get elected on this hoped-for political programme then?

The use of 'Mickey's Son & Daughter' (Bonzos) during the Stephen Fry montage must have been the first time this has been on an ITV programme since the band were on 'Do Not Adjust Your Set'!

I think 'On Her Doorstep Last Night' was also used, and that makes me think of his role in 'Jeeves & Wooster' anyway! I can imagine all the Drones Club regulars joining in on 'Then he kissed her...WHO DID?'
