Razz Hiya!

"Radio 2 - Take 2" ... I like it.

No, he's not for me at that time in the morning although I have listened in a few times as I did with Drivetime. I couldn't stand much of that either.
I agree with Helen, no matter what time he might be on, or what show he presents, his voice and manner irritates me so it's a lost cause - even though he's quite probably a nice fellow.

Contrary to some comments however.. I find the "Hello - Goodbye" bit at the end quite amusing! Laughing If Kenny Everett or DLT had done this, it would have been praised.... maybe..

I'm happy to listen to the fabulous Radcliffe & Maconie show whilst getting ready for the day. Very Happy

Perhaps... but they'd have done it on Radio 1 and amused an audience of Radio 1 listeners.

That, essentially, is Evans' big problem; he's got the right show but it's on the wrong station.

I agree, there should be an Evans,Carr etc - free zone for all of us displaced R2 listeners to go to. It's the least the R2 powers-that-be should do for us.

What R2 should be providing the listener with more of is PROPER RADIO BROADCASTERS eg: Alex Lester, Janice Long, Johnnie Walker, Mark Radcliffe, Bob Harris etc- not celebrity talent-free zones who are employed because they have a famous name that the powers-that-be think will increase listening figures long term.

I would much rather listen to an entertaining, knowledgable presenter who I'd never heard of than a "star" who talks utter nonsense Evil or Very Mad

Radio 2 at Breakfast has gained at least one listener. Me. I used to listen to Wogan, but in the last sweveral months i'd just switched off. The endless Janet & John stories, silly voices & general chortling just made me switch over to Magic.
I find Chris Evans' Breakfast excelent. Nice selection of music, cute freatures & Moira & Lynn make a nice balance.
I think poor old Foxy on Magic must be getting worried

Neil was once offered the Radio One breakfast show. I reckon he would have been a good choice for a show on Two. He's very knowledgable about Music.

Quite the opposite. In the last few months I felt an extra spark in the show, some relief no doubt after Wogan announcing his intentions to leave Breakfast, thereby being able to simply get on with his job. Janet and John stories were hardly endless, not with the newsreader rotation and Walker's regular stand-ins!

As for silly voices and general chortling, sure, there's none of that on the 'new and improved' Breakfast show... Cool

Listen to Feedback on Radio 4, now on Listen Again. Mr Shennan still thinks Chris Evans is a great replacement for Terry Wogan. The poor misguided fool.

Sarah Kennedy made me laugh whilst "listening again" this morning. After yet another of those interminably mind-numbing promotions for Chris Evans, (something about a sporting challenge on the radio) she drily announced that the Dawn Patrol was about to launch a new feature.... painting by numbers on the radio. Nice one Sarah Laughing

Actually we managed to get Sarah's show at 8.00am this morning, which just means we have to stay in bed an hour longer than normal. No great hardship at this time of the year. Wink

Gotta love SK, last week she was reading out emails about how peeps were either recording the show and listening at 7 or listening to the previous days show when Mr shouty comes on.

I never thought I'd say this but CE taking over the Breakfast Show isn't all bad. Shocked I also listen to SK via i-player while the shouty one is on, which is fine on the days I'm at home. PLUS I can now listen to Drivetime. I've gone from listening to it, just with a sense of relief that this is no longer a R2-free zone, to positively enjoying the show presented by Simon Mayo. I think it has settled down to being a very good listen.

Sorry, Guys('n' Gals). I tried, I really tried. On the way home from a long night shift I tuned to radio 2. The music wasn't bad, but the talking over the ends of records and the childish interludes were too much!

I will continue to see if I can manage more than 5 minutes, but I don't hold out much hope.

Was hearing Chris and emails regarding the show. Someone said about Chris being a cover for Wogan return. I think it was quite funny, and Chris is receiving emails from listeners like Wogan did. I don't think they are read out in the way Wogan used too, but Chris is just doing it in his own way.

I do think the handover between Ken and him just don't sound right. There has been some good handovers in the past between Terry & Ken. Maybe a little more working on. Although the Ken Bruce jingle seems to be cut short now at 9.30am.

The handover between Terry and Ken wasn't always smooth and sometimes sounded awkward. If the longer Ken Bruce jingle was used then it might make it a bit easier. Also if Chris didn't do the silly "hello - goodbye" thing right up to the handover, instead just coming up to it with a record.

The problem with the handovers is that Ken Bruce is more quick-witted than most others, and usually leaves the other person awkwardly speechless (Wogan, Evans, O'Leary to name a few). Only really Johnny seems to be on the same level as Ken.

Why bother with a handover at all, it's not like they've got to pass the mic over is it? "We're off, Ken is next, see you tomorrow"....would do ... or it could be even more efficient than that....I have an American friend ... when he's off ... he just says .." later ... bye!" Maybe Ken should have a 10 or 15 minute over-produced build up to his show with loads of old TV theme tunes mixed together with a couple of stirring jingles like Chris and Steve do, then by the time Ken was ready to speak, Chris would be half way down the A40.

I like Chris little sarcastic comments after playing the Wogan trailer on Fridays show. " Saying it's a little loud, you might need to turn it down".. I think it's referral to listeners on message boards moaning about him being loud. Laughing

Chris could be in line to host the BBC " The One Show" on a Friday night for one hour. Adrian Chiles is said" not to be pleased about this". I wouldn't beleive anything yet.

I suppose having sometime off to think about ideas is a good time. You can't do that in a weekend. There seems to be a little frustration somewhere in the back of his mind. My guessing Richard Allinson was Chris idea to cover the show, as your in a safe pair of hands.

Radio Times says that Chris Evans isn't on holiday this week and it's already been observed that he's not on leave, just not on the air. Whatever the reason for taking him off air, it was organised at relatively short notice. Reviewing the breakfast show format does seem the most likely explanation - after a week away we can have a string of "he's back" trails and format changes won't be quite so obvious.

Let's assume that Uncle Bob isn't going to change the presenter - it's too soon to back down at this stage. What would you take out and what would you leave? Here's my starter for ten...

The start to each hour is too noisy and overly complicated. Drop it down to one jingle and straight into some music - the "special day" announcements can stay, but do them later and without backing music. Evans is trying to stop talking as the backing music ends and it makes him talk too quickly sometimes.

I like the "kids doing something for the first time" slot, the "golden oldie" and the "wrong bongs", though not firing off bongs at the start would improve the presentation.

There's no reason why sports can't stay - I'm not much into sports and I find I can ignore it, but I ignore the news most days, too! Johnny and Moira both know how to stand up to Evans, so keep them - Lynn's good, too.

I'm not impressed with the "news items" bit at about 8.15. Keep in a link with Johnny and Moira by all means, but find a new format.

Chris to be less intrusive while the core of "pause for thought" is read out.

"You say hello, we say goodbye" to be taken to the vets to be put down humanely.

Evans is at his best when he's reading short emails and relaxing with the team. More room for this, please. He's at his best when he's not trying to talk quickly - perhaps he should just use less backing music all round?

The music's not bad, though I've not noticed another Sinatra since one was played in the first programme to make a point. Perhaps only one record an hour would need to be changed to improve the balance.

So what would *you* do with the format if you were not allowed to change the staffing?

Things to think about.

Intro jingle… too long.. bin the stupid “representing things” they’re not relevant or interesting.
Get rid of the kids… they’re not great broadcasters….. yet.
Get rid of Jonny… he’s too loud; .. too…. well just too Jonny, for Breakfast. Bin the sport completely – get Foxy in for some breakfast business.
Get rid of the Wrong bongs….we don’t make mistakes at the BBC- get it right first time or you’re out.
Get rid of the head to headlines… not interesting or entertaining.
Get rid of the after the 8am news jingle…. We all know that the working week consists of Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday… being reminded of that once is bad enough but three times? Come on!
Get rid of the megaphone announcement thing- what’s that all about? Who cares?

Having chopped out all the guff – there’s plenty if time to play records without having to talk all over them!

But mainly, stop doing a Drivetime show at breakfast!

If you need a hand, call me- I'll work for free.

hey my 3000th post....yay!

For me, the only parts of the show I have any affection for are the 'wrong bongs' (something satisfying about a show reviewing yesterday's show), and Moira's Golden Oldie. Everything else feels stale already. The megaphone call, the head-to-headlines, the 'representing the nation' pieces....

I agree that Chris is at his best when relaxing with his 'team'. I'm wondering if Moira could be put to greater use - would it not be better to have a better newspaper review a bit like the one that used to appear on Parky's/Ball's show?

As it's my day off, here's my suggestion:

7am to 7.30: Half hour where not much happens - anecdotes, music, travel and e-mails.

7.30 to 8: Continue in a similar way but add in the wrong bongs and sport report.

8 to 8.30: Re-work the 'mystery caller' feature so that Chris gets to speak to someone interest and relevant to the day. I've noticed this has already started to happen but I think this piece would be better placed in the 'school run' primetime slot. People I know who only ever hear the 8 - 8.30 slot are fed up at being tortured with megaphones and head-to-headlines everyday - a short interview would make this more varied and interesting. Also, no need to set Chris a 3 minute time limit, he talks fast enough as it is.

8.30 to 9: Most of the half hour given over to a proper newspaper review with Chris & Moira; still leave in sport.

9 to 9.30: The show relaxes off, keep pause for thought, and end show with more music and no features.

That sounds okay to me. What do you think?

Nick.

I think that it has already suffered from far too much thought, preparation, and hand-wringing about losing the fluffy-slipper end of Wogan's audience. Taking a whole week off to think about it some more is not only laughably dramatic it'll be a complete waste of time and, since I presume we're still paying them while they're doing it, our money.

Having decided to succeed Terry with Chris they should have just let him get on with doing what he has been doing on Drivetime. Instead, he's got to start worrying about not offending the TOGs (who were probably only there because of Terry anyway - my mum skipped off to Smooth when JW deputised), about playing older music, about attracting children before that Moyles fella gets hold of them, about giving Moira Stuart something to do in the morning. The moment the announcement was made he became more nervous, more forced, more shouty (hard to imagine, I know). And from Day One, January 11th, it was obvious he was Trying Too Hard, and the more you realise something's not right, the harder you try.

Richard Allinson this morning delivered a very good Richard Allinson show, without gimmicks and wacky features. It flowed, the music list was far more cohesive than it has been, and the presenter sounded relaxed. Well, he's got nothing to lose, has he?

Having obviously not got it right first time, I don't think it would do Chris any harm to go back to basics for a while; play the records and have just one or two threads for listener interaction; with all the news, sport and traffic going on that should be enough, bearing in mind that for sixteen years Terry got away with ridiculing last night's telly and reading the same dozen emails in a slightly different order each day. Yes, add business in, and ditch the newspaper headline "review" (I never liked it on Sarah's show). After a while introduce things with a bit more life in them. Softly softly might work better.

You're right there Ron. It's over-produced and has been converted from a breakfast programme to not only a "breakfast experience" but a showcase for his life and activities (even more than Drivetime was).

Sadly, I think this week away is going to result in further increasingly contrived "gimmicks" and "angles", when all that's really needed at that time of the day is, as you say, some good music and a minimum of "slots".

How nice it was to listen to RA this morning, and I would never call myself a RA fan.

On another note, I twice yesterday heard someone joking about "listening again" to the the current programme being aired, during the mornings. One of them was Tel himself, who suggested the listeners could listen to his Sunday show "in the mornings" followed by a little laugh. The other was an email from a listener to the Paul O'Grady show, who said he was working but would be "listening again" to the show between 7.00 and 9.30 am in the morning.

The only way that I can see that will improve the midweek Radio 2 breakfast show is a change of presenter. No not to another TV celeb who shouts either!

I heard Paul read that email and had to smile, wondered if he'd get his knuckles rapped as well!

Apart from getting rid of pretty much everything on the CE show I'd also suggest they go back to a 7.30 start. They could then put everyone else back to their old times.

If I had my way I'd remove him completely, but then miracles rarely happen sadly. I'm not given to praying very often but wonder which saint would be most appropriate for the task?

Essentially, they just need to go back to basics. They took an already-packed Drivetime format and added even more unnecessary stuff, so Chris became even more shouty to get it all in, and it just became bloody hard work to listen. You don't want that in the morning.

The puzzle is how it managed to get on air like that. Is everyone so confident of their star that no-one stopped to think what could be done?

While I don't mind Richard and can tolerate him, I do find him quite bland a lot of the time.
Don't forget that a lot of us are at work at that time and find Chris amusing, he also brings some much needed vitality to the start of the working day.
I like the little features etc, what would you get if you took them out? Another boring A list record is my guess.
The hello goodbye bit at the end is just a bit of fun at the end of the show which lasts for about 30 seconds, the way some people talk, you would think it was the whole show!!!
I'd much rather have someone who put a bit of effort into the show than just turning up and churning out Keane, Robbie Williams, Pixie Lott all the time, BORING.
My only complaints are that after some good music at the start, I detect a slight drift into the dreaded playlist zone a bit too often, I hope they aren't forced down that road.
Also I'm not a fan of Lynne Bowles and her completely fake laugh, but that's probably just me and I can live with her even though I'd prefer to hear more of Johnny and Moira
