Good for Nick Winterton... of course MPs should be allowed to travel first class on the trains.
Why do we have this condemning attitude now in the UK? surely MPs should be respected for their position? ( I know they're not all saints Laughing )

In my life, I've barely used the trains in this country but my last encounter using the "normal" passenger cars ( Standard class according to JV?) was horrendous!
Loud mouthed yobs drinking and swearing, overcrowded and dirty.. not for me anymore. If I could afford it at the time in the future, I would pay the extra for the privilege of First Class without a second thought.

Some of the comment on today's show had the familiar theme of First Class shouldn't be allowed in general let alone for travelling MPs.. well I don't agree with that either. If people are prepared to pay extra for additional comfort or working space then good for them.

Don't get me wrong, In my limited travel I've always used tourist class but, as I wasn't feeling too well on the last few days of my holiday in the US, My wife "upped" our return flight to Premium ( the one in the middle ) and it was superb.. more room better service, off and on quicker too.
Yes, there should be a choice.

I don't think the issue is about his right to travel first class on trains or any other mode of transport where it's offered, it's that he'd like to do it at our expense. I personally don't have any objection to his travelling first class so long as he pays for it out of his own pocket. Goodness knows, being one of Shameron's lot he must be rich enough to afford it! I think his whole rant made him sound a right pompous pillock.
As for the condition of the 'cattle class' carriages, surely that is, at least partly, the responsibility of the train company (yes I know the travelling public also have a responsibility to take their litter home and not leave it on the train)

But if he or any other Politician decided not to pay the fare, they would (sometimes) have to carry out their work amongst a potentially noisy car full of people and pretty crammed too from what I understand..
Plus of course, they could be liable to abuse or attack from disgruntled voters.
It just seems to me sometimes our officialdom appear to be open to all kinds of personal and sometimes petty attack from the media.
I don't think this would be the case so much in other civilized countries?
When I heard on the news yesterday that a large percentage of students didn't even know who Gordon Brown is, I just wonder if we've gone down this route too far..

Santa... if you plan and book ahead it's actually less expensive to go first class than it is to turn up on the day to buy a standard ticket.... When I go London ....I buy in advance, two first class singles, one for each way, ( the only down side is you have to nominate your trains but again it's all in the planning) they cost 21 each... a standard cheap day return .. is 58.......but I guess that's a different issue. MPs should travel first class, especially if they may be working on consituancy work which may be of a private nature.....It's rubbish in standard class- I'd sooner walk than travel in standard class... it's way too dangerous, maybe if I had an anti-stab-vest and several body guards, I'd consider it but even then I'd probably just not travel if standard class was the only option.

So for all we know this Winterton chap may be planning and booking his first class tickets in advance- so he's actually saving the tax-payer money.

I agree with you Sante Fe, a shame that he put his case rather clumsily. It was all over our local news as he's the next constituency to ours.

As Rachel says you can often get good deals. The Weekend First is another good one, where you pay I think 10 (think it's each way but not 100%) on top of your standard class cheapy to go First Class.

I also agree with Jeremy that it will be a great shame when all the 'colourful characters' leave parliament. I'd rather have them than the faceless ones that are coming through at the moment.
