I'm pleased to hear Andrew Lloyd Webber has stepped in to buy the Abbey Road studios, although I wonder why it's been put up for sale in the first place?
I'm also surprised and disappointed that Paul McCartney didn't snap it up straight away from his pocket change!

Despite my dislike of Mr Evans' style, I must say the music on the breakfast show has been excellent this morning! plus I believe he's been partly responsible for pushing the sale of Abbey Road to somebody who will promote and appreciate it.

Shame on you Macca... Sad

I think it's up to him what he spends his money on, it's not for any of us to tell him what he should or shouldn't be buying.

That's true but, as the studios were such a big part of his life, and his success, I'd have thought he would have wanted to buy it.. for sentimental reasons or to promote up and coming bands which he may like, or just to keep it in British hands..
The money wouldn't mean anything to him.

EMI had over 1 billion in losses

Where is this confirmed?

Re: it's early history, the first recordings were not by Elgar, but by Ray Noble who directed the New Mayfair Dance Orchestra and helped design the acoustics.

And Jack Hylton recorded at Abbey Road!

I heard Chris Evans shouting about on it on his Breakfast show.. Embarassed

I just Googled it and he's apparently made a good offer.

I know and I do see what you are saying but if he doesn't want it then there is no reason why he should buy it regardless of how much money he has.
It may be better if somebody like the National Trust bought it but again it's up to them as to whether they would want it or not.

Easy for EMI to say that now. Wait til the administrators walk in, or Citibank turns its lending into equity.

EMI doesn't need it any more, it's clearly under-utilised, makes no money and needs oodles spending on it to refurbish and maintain it. Where will they find philanthropic pockets deep enough?

In an old interview shown on sky arts last week Noel Gallagher said that it's far too expensive to record there and the only reason he did so was because of the Beatles....and the fact he lived around the corner Smile

That's a bit naughty, really. Spiteful, even.

It was turned down for listed status by English Heritage five years ago. What's changed?
