So did I hear on the news that the BBC is seriously considering the closure of 6Music and the Asian Station?
Quite a big move I'd have thought.. it doesn't matter in the least to me as I don't listen to either but I wonder what changes this'll bring about to Radio2 with all those extra jocks in limbo.
I hope this will be the start of creating a Radio 2 Extra! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Apparently, according to the Times. Radio 2 will have to ensure 50% of it's DAYTIME output consists of documentaries or speech radio!
This seems bizarre to me - we have Radio 4 and 7 for that. What we want is to scrap the playlist (leave that to radio 1) and give us all the fantastic music from the 20th century. _________________ MiS |

I did open up a thread in the News section earlier
Yeah. The door is now open to give a station to the 60+ listeners. It will give Bob Shennan a opening to freshen up Radio 2 even more. Even give 6 Music an FM frequency for the time being? Also even if the plans are right Aunty Beeb wouldn't save money shutting 6 Music, if they won't to save money sell off Radio 1 to commercial radio. |

"6 Music's place as a sanctuary from shite was shattered."
Quote: | If 6 Music is axed, no doubt many of its stars will filter into the Radio Two schedule. But it won't be the same. Which will leave 6 Music listeners with a rather large problem – where should we go now?

If the Beeb decided to form Radio 2 extra, move some DJs from 6 to 2 and the good ones from 2 to 2 Extra, all the listeners from 6 would drift over to 2 wouldn't they? - sorted..
I think it would be better all round myself. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I wasn't a fan of R6, but if the BBC had spent the same amount of money promoting R6 as it did on Chris Evans' changeover to the Breakfast show, it might have attracted better listening figures. _________________ Minx

I think it's because it's a DAB station, had it been on FM it would have had far more listeners.
You can't listen in the car and if you you've only one DAB radio (I have none other than via TV or PC and rarely use the TV for radio) you're stuck to one room. The beauty of radio is for me that you can move from room to room and it's there with you.
I've a feeling DAB is doomed! Anyone see the article in the Mail last week or maybe the week before by Ray Conolly (I think) saying apart from other things 'don't buy a DAB radio it's all a con'! I'm trying to do without one for as long as I can as reception is not good even though it should be.

They're hardly going to create a new "Radio 2 Extra" if the whole point of getting rid of the other stations is to save money! |

Well it may be that they've realised Radio 2 simply cannot cover the age range they've targeted.. they also may have realised that Radio1, Radio1 extra and 6 Music all do roughly the same job and that there's a big void for the older listener. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

If the BBC are to shut 6 Music they an't going to save. If they shut Radio 1 then they would save thousands. It's about savings, but your forgetting the BBC have just spent millions which could run into billions for extentions to Broadcasting house and other new buildings up north. Yes cost cutting websites, and possible folding up some BBC magazines maybe a good idea. Also cutting back on celebrity stars being hired to cover or host shows on Radio 2 could save a little, when 6 Music have good quality presenters who could cover. |

The part that perplexes me is where it stipulates that "at least half" of Radio 2's Daytime output consists of speech radio.
WHY???
Radio 4, Five live & BBC 7 are Speech based radio stations. Radio 2 is a music based station and should remain so.
The chart on Page 7 of yesterdays' Times shows Radio 2 as far and away the most listened to radio station in the UK with 14.8 million listeners.
This means they are doing something right.
If Radio 2 wants to appeal more to the over 65's they should bring some of the specialist shows stuck in the 10.30 or 11PM slots & schedule them for mid evenings.
7 till 10PM on radio 2 should be given over to specialist music- or at least 7 till 9PM.
Also, continue with the diversification of music from all eras we are starting to hear on the CE Breakfast show.
I don't see how making Radio 2 a speech station would increase its appeal with the over 65's.
I did laugh when I looked at the bottom of the ratings chart- right near the very bottom, above only Digital station The Hits, is the rubbish Absolute Radio |

On SOTS this morning they played Ambrose Slade's version of the Idle Race's 'Knocking Nails Into My House' - they should have dedicated this to the Tory lot the Beeb are bowing and scraping to.
Bob Shennan deserves a kick game of his own like the Chris Evans one. I have signed the petition! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Is it not possible this was all leaked on purpose. The theory being that the backlash would be so great that it would lead to a mass support for the BBC, ringfencing it from future cuts similar to the 'save our NHS' campaign in reaction to Sarah Palin's attack of our health service?
I may sound a little like a bloke with a tin-foil cap but I'll still be shocked if BBC 6 Music does actually go. |

The backlash can't be so great with only 600,000 listeners compared with Radio 2's 15 million can it?..
I'm more concerned about the future of DAB.. for me at least in this area, the quality is amazing. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I have DAB radio in every room, but the variety of stations you get is not what it should be.
On my PC I can access a wonderful range of radio stations, but i can't carry it around with me |

I don't get your reasoning Mark.. 600,000 listeners is nothing compared to the potential millions who would like to see a new Station dedicated to older music.. so why should the Beeb favour this station?
Reading some of the reports, it does make me ask why the listener ship is only 600k.. if the station is so great amongst the younger and more selective market, why hasn't there been more of an uptake? DAB radios are not that expensive and the quality is much better. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I agree SanteFe. I think there are already enough stations for the younger age group and aren't we being told they listen to their own and downloaded music on ipods instead of radio?
If it had been on FM I think things would maybe have been different. Car listening makes for a lot of listeners.

Quote: | Speaking to Radio today about the possibility of 6 Music being closed in a BBC strategic review, the Chief Operating Officer of Absolute Radio has said he would buy 6 Music and operate it better under commercial ownership.
Absolute has twice the audience of the BBC station but a significantly smaller budget.
Speaking to Radio Today, Clive said: “We share a similar ethos to 6 Music – a passion for music discovery, comedy and live music. We know there’s an audience out there for more engaging radio programmes, like Frank Skinner, Dave Gorman or Lauren Laverne.
A more efficiently run 6 Music could retain its current programming and sit perfectly in Absolute’s stable of stations, alongside Absolute Classic Rock, Absolute ‘80s and dabbl.”
Industry experts have told The Times that they believe the station could fetch £2million – £3million, if the BBC was willing to sell.
Listeners of 6 Music have rallied round the station with a Facebook group gaining in members to save the station. On Twitter earlier today, Lauren Laverne said: "Looks like I’m joining that facebook group then. Boo, boo and thrice boo. That is all. Sad."
On the 6 Music breakfast show, presenter Shaun Keaveny said on air: "First of all, massive thanks to everyone who has shown their support, it’s literally choking us up. We hope it isn’t true, of course |

The point isn't about how many listeners are tuning in, because the BBC are trying to save money not trying to attract ratings. If that was the case, helen, Mark Thompson wouldn't think about closing 6 Music. Anyway the petitions about 6 Music being under threat. What about the Asian Network? |

Mark,
At the end of the day in this current economic climate it has to be about listeners. There isn't enough money for them all, so the station with fewest listeners has to go. I doubt licence payers would stump up more money so that it could stay on air.
600,000 listeners is equal to the approximate population of Glasgow, sort of puts it into perspective don't you think?
Do you actually listen to the station or are you just against the closure?

I listen to 6 music as it is now my refuge from that infernal racket that is now the R2 midweek breakfast show and, in the midweek afternoons, Steve Wright. So I am definately against it's closure. All the BBC need to do is get rid of these overpaid celebs and start giving the many jobbing DJs out there the big break that they no doubt crave and there would be a big saving there. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

BBC could sell off 6 Music to a commercial rivial. This would make the corporation a laughing stock to the licence fee payer. Selling off assets to rivals. Whatever next...... |

If Absolute buy out 6 Music, I hope this doesn't mean putting unnecessary ad breaks into The Freak Zone, so that, say, a Hatfield & The North song is cut off so we can hear those horrible kids failing to reach the notes in I'll Do Anything (on the anti-smoking ad)one more time! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

If Absolute buy 6 Music you know it will be Absolute Rubbish.
Anyone ever listened to the idiot on Absolute prattling on during "Hometime" (Drive time)???
The ad breaks are a relief. The prattling dj's and boring selection of music a major irritation.
Since Absolute are failing in the ratings, why are they even being considered to take over 6Music?? |

On the Absolute rumour - aren't some the presenters contracted to the BBC? If so, they might not be able to just move house as it were. |
