A quick "Thank You" to John for allowing me back in. The last time I posted here was under the user name of "colby", and I left after being banned for a day by John for some minor misdemeanor (which I accept was my own fault!). Humble apologies.
I'd really like to get back into the discussion here in ways that are positive and constructive. I'm an educational technologist by profession and also a freelance writer on the subject of consumer electronics (with 400 specialist magazine articles and 3.5 books to my name). I'm very interested in all aspects of consumer and broadcast audio/video technology, so if you have questions relating to all that stuff then please don't hesitate to ask.
Meanwhile, what's happening to the Radio 2 that I used to enjoy?
One issue that concerns me right now is the high level of censorship that's taking place on the BBC Messageboards. I've had two posts censored this week despite their not breaking any rules - does the fact that they were criticising decisions taken by senior BBC management have anything to do with it, I wonder? What worries me is that they haven't even offered up a reasonable explanation for their actions and I doubt whether they will, either.
Paranoia, perhaps?
Anyway, hello to one and all.

Welcome back Colby, glad to see you've returned! I've missed your technical input and point of view...
Yes, I've had a few posts removed over there too..
One post was removed a couple of days ago simply because I placed just two "laugh" emoticons after some body's message - something about "Two saddo's taking up the complete first page of threads" _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Thanks SFF
Yes, I've noticed your posts over there too. The most recent removal I've had to endure is one in which I dared to suggest that perhaps Jonathan Ross' so-called "resignation" came after it was blatantly obvious that he wasn't going to survive at the Beeb beyond the term of his current contract.
I've now received a statement from the mods telling me that my post was removed because it was "potentially defamatory". Odd really, when you consider that the same notion was suggested in print by the Telegraph, the Guardian and even the Daily Mail but neither Ross nor the Beeb has challenged such assumptions.
Still, Lonegroover believes it....
BTW: I think Briant has rumbled by R2MB identity! Dammit. |

Hello Colby , (Colin) welcome back my old nemesis. It’s actually been very quiet on here of late (due, I think, to the R2MB opening up properly again). So it's nice ( gritted teeth....) to see you again.
What has happened to Radio 2? … well, there is still the same range of brilliant programmes as there ever was but some prawn moved them all around so they’re all on at the wrong times!
Question … it’s about Cornwall and DAB… we recently went to Cornwall, and cos there’s a very poor ( none at all) FM signal where we go, we took our little DAB ( the one I bought without any research cos it looked just like a toaster, it’s a Dualit)… anyway, it worked perfectly in every room in our place there- cool beans we thought,… so hubby went off to buy another one ( after months of research) he came up with a Pure One,… something like that anyway it’s black ugly and really annoying to use …. not a squeak … not a sound … didly-squat … no signal… not on DAB not on FM… we brought both back home … both work perfectly…. Why does my DAB work in Cornwall but hubby’s is a brick there, only less useful? |

Hi Rachel
Thanks for the re-welcome! My alter-ego, Colby, is currently "resting" as I type.
As for DAB in Kernow (I'm half-Cornish and pretty hot on the local lingo as you can tell), the normal explanation for a device not seeing a particular channel is that the Pure device isn't able to lock into whichever frequency the digital station is using in your particular area. However, the fact that it doesn't work at all indicates a more major problem! (ie: it's not working at all).
I assume it's not completely kapput, is it? The fact that it's no good even on FM indicates that it's basically - er - knackered! |

Hi Colin, I'm really glad you're back to perk things up. I've missed you too. Now I'm wondering which is you on those inferior message boards! _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

OK. I have nothing to say, officer.

Thanks Helen. Of course, you have set the standard to which we can only aspire - being the most famous "censored" R2MB poster! (Happy memories of the first wave of Evans criticism etc., and your subsequent triumphant appearance on Radio 4's Feedback programme)
Thanks for the welcomes, one and all. I feel more at home here than those useless R2 forums.

Thanks Colin, I'd forgotten how good your technical advice is! Both DABs work fine here in Dorset .. the Pure one doesn't work in Cornwall even when put in exactly the same spot as the other one that does work there...You would think that they would have some sort of standard reception circuits so they would all have a similar reception performance. Just another reason why we shouldn't dabble with DAB. |

Rachel - that is very odd indeed!
Although I can't guess at the what causes that phenomenon, I can only assume that Unit A (the one that works in Cornwall) is more responsive to what might be a lower power signal than Unit B. But, then again, why no FM reception either? St least with analogue you can get something of a signal, whereas with digital it's either "on" or "off" (being ones and zeroes). Weird.
It's dem Cornish piskies poking fun at the Grockles & Emmets, methinks! |

Hello, and welcome back Colin/Colby/Firewire/etc. It's true, we've missed your technical nous.
It has been quiet here, but then when you've raked over the "Sarah Kennedy/Chris Evans/celebrity DJs are carp and Alex Lester/Richard Allinson/Johnnie Walker are brill coals daily since 2006 there's not much left to make a new fire, and there seems to be little appetite for more general discussions.
If anything, I think the Radio 2 boards are worse now than they have ever been. The "2 News and Views" forum is monopolised by Scott, and the discussions on the "Your Music" one seem to be as much about spamming and the arguments a couple of them had with members of another message board as they are about any decent music. The moderation over there is, as always, a joke. _________________ Ron |

Ron, I agree. The R2MB is a complete waste of time. I would always aim to treat it as a way of putting listeners' thoughts in front of the powers that be at the BBC, but whenever you do raise serous concerns and question those in authority the post will inevitably be censored (or "referred for moderation") without proper reasoning.
In other words, please make congratulatory comments only.
What's funny is that now the format has returned to a "last in, top listing" format, so the opportunity to bump old threads and repeat the same old Scott-style rubbish has returned.
I noticed yesterday that even Lonegroover has taken the opportunity to pick up week-old "I think Evans is God" threads and attach his pompous, fawning comments in order to put them to the top of the list.
It's best to leave it alone, I think. |
