Fast Car was the debut single by tracy Chapman
It was not a bad song & I quite liked it at the time. But hardly an all time classic? It wasn't ever a huge hit. So why are radio stations 9not so much Radio 2) forever rolling out this track time & time again?

That's just one example of this. Daytime radio is littered with them. When you hear Sheryl Crow on the radio, it's invariably 'All I Wanna Do' that's played. When did you last hear 'My Favourite Mistake' or 'There Goes The Neighbourhood', both on her excellent Globe Sessions album? Both were singles. For many years, if you heard The Moody Blues on the radio, it was 'Nights In White Satin' or 'Go Now'. Thankfully in recent years, Radio 2, at least, has been a bit more adventurous in what tracks of their's that they play, not least Terry Wogan in the Wake Up To Wogan Days. I know there are plenty of other artists that have suffered similarly. Haven't they taken to calling such tracks their 'pension plan' or words to that effect?

Many local stations operate on the Prince from Snow White rule (as in 'One song, I have but one song...'), hence with Tracey Chapman it will be Fast Car, and not, say, Baby Can I Hold You.

They may also play Gabrielle's ripoff of the above, Dreams.

With Marillion it's always Kayleigh, and never, say, Dry Land or Beautiful.

Viz:

Van Morrison, Brown Eyed Girl

Elton John, Are You Ready For Love

Natalie Imbruglia, Torn

Gerry Rafferty, Baker Street

All guaranteed to provoke an "oh no! Not AGAIN" Rolling Eyes ! IN THIS HOUSE.

Another example of this syndrome is this week's Radio 2 'album of the week' which is The Very Best Of Free & Bad Company. This is featured on Alex Lester's & Ken Bruce's shows respectively. This is what has been played thus far this week.
Alex Lester Show
Mon) Free...'Wishing Well'
Tue) Bad Company...'Can't Get Enough'
Wed) Free...'All Right Now'
---------------------------------------------------
Ken Bruce Show
Mon) Free....'All Right Now'
Tue) Free....'My Brother Jake'
Wed) Bad Company...'Can't Get Enough'

I think that says it all really. Let's see whether Thursday & Friday bring anything rare & exciting!

I reckon they're not allowed to play Feel Like Makin' Love during the daytime because it's so closely assocaited with Johnnie Walker's old Radio 1 show.

You may have wondered why only one Beach Boys song gets played endlessly. Here's why:

Producer: What Beach Boys song can we include today?
Programme Assistant: God only knows
Producer: That'll do.

Smile

Brilliant, CB!

Do you think Breakaway gets little airtime for fear they're advertising a chocolate biscuit?

Little Pieces, ARFM have played Interior Lulu and the 'Less Is More' version of Cannibal Surf Babe. And You're Gone - the song that TOTP wouldn't play because they really had to show Victoria Beckham's promo. Evil or Very Mad

And another - SOTS played 'I'm The Urban Spacemen' by the Bonzos, though I'd rather have 'Equestrian Statue' or 'Readymades' - this last another song championed by Mr. Maconie!

I assume that many smaller stations get a PRS-free job lot from record companies featuring (at best) 1 or 2 songs by that company's middle-range artists.

I hate to say it but my favourite band They Might Be Giants appear to be in this job lot from Warners, with their "one song" Birdhouse In Your Soul popping up surprisingly frequently on commercial stations. Still, better to be on that list than missed off altogether.

My favourite Bonzos song was "Canyons of Your Mind". I forget which album it was from but is such a great song (completely barmy, of course!).

A friend of mine briefly shared a flat in Kentish Town with Viv Stanshall in the 70s, and reports that Viv wasn't mad at all until he got "into character".
