That's all good news for fans of Chris' show. Smile

For the non-fans, I don't think that they'd say they suffer defeat, just that they suffer.

Right....

So this is either:

a) Chris Evans got 695,000 listens on iPlayer in his first few weeks (but then, everything went up in January - it was a record month)

b) Chris Evans gets 8% more listeners on iPlayer than Wogan did and the BBC/Mirror have decided this means more listeners overall

c) it's complete PR spin from the BBC and a journalist who doesn't understand figures.

I can't say I'm surprised, given all the hype that it had and the fact that the "fun, fun, fun" format is radically different to that which preceded it. I intentionally don't listen so I'm not bothered, but good luck to the guy all the same.

I actually listen to Chris Moyles now. And I never thought I'd see myself writing that!

Cool

Ian: I go with option (c) in that this venture of using Evans at R2 Breakfast is something for which failure simply isn't an option. From a PR perspective, the BBC simply has to make it succeed.

Although, I do like the idea of it being all three!

What is the point of 'unofficial' figures?

Apart from anything else the listening period doesn't end until 31 March.

PR, pure and simple. It's what the PR industry calls a "controlled leak" - the government does it all the time.

There's a General Election coming up on (we assume) May 6th, and the BBC really does have to gain the support and faith of whichever party wins. It has to be seen to be making the right decisions in the interests of all licence-fee payers, and for Evans to be gaining higher-than-projected audience figures looks good on the BBC.

To me, it tells a rather different story, but hey......

IF these figures are accurate, and it's a big "if", there must be an awful lot of people with very low standards.

This description of Monday's show from the Radio 2 site:

Agreed. There are many words that come to mind, and "pathetic" is certainly one of them.

Ah so that's what Chris was tweeting about last weekend. He said he had the "best news of his professional career" but wasn't allowed to tell anyone. He said it wasn't about a new show. Most people then replied saying "did you get higher ratings that Wogan" and he then tweeted that most people were dead on the money. So I guess it's this then.

I must say, and I know I keep changing my mind, since Chris has returned from his week away to 'regroup', I really think the show has found its groove. Good balance, nice recurring themes, and relaxed. Chris makes me laugh and I'm glad its working out. *shields himself from the onslaught of tomatoes*

I have to confess that I've started to listen more now. Still don't like the "mega-phonein", or the puerile "hello-goodbye" twaddle; Johnny Saunders' corny lead-up to the three-minute interview is a waste of breath, although the feature itself is usually quite good.

On the plus side, I think Moira Stewart is an excellent foil for Chris, and he does seem to be growing into the programme; he seems less "shouty" than he was at the beginning.

One other comment; the show was refreshingly free of Children-in- Greed plugs for the first few weeks; it would be nice to keep it that way.

It'll be interesting to see if they're anywhere near that when the official figures for January-March are released in qa couple of months time. Confused

I don't believe this for one second. The BBC will not admit anything so it has to be a "success", at least as far as they are concerned. As far as we are concerned in this house, we don't listen and we won't listen. Not even to Moira stumbling over the news at 7am either now. It was getting on my nerves. Somewhere out there, there must be breakfast radio for me, until then its as others have said before me - Evans on, Radio off!

What I find peculiar is that I literally (and honestly!) don't know know anybody who listens to Radio 2 Breakfast with the "great" Chris Evans. Not one - yet I know several people who listened to Wogan.

In fact, the only people I'm aware of who do listen are those who insist on his being the second coming over on the R2MB.

It's very odd.

Yes it is odd, I don't know anyone who listens to it either. I know lots of people who used to tune in to Wogan though!

My mum, who's 80 this year, said that all the women in her WI group (the infamous "jam & jerusalem brigade") have stopped listening to R2 altogether due to the breakfast change. My mother-in-law, almost the same age, said "Why are they putting that loud-mouthed idiot on for? What was wrong with Wogan?".

Talk about mass alienation of the blue-rinse mob. Obviously they just don't matter!

I don't know anyone who does either! One of my friends really liked him on Drive but can't stand him on Breakfast and now admits she understands how I felt when he took over on Drivetime! She's gone over to Smooth NW.

I DO know a lot of people who were Wogan listeners and now choose R4/local/commercial -anything but R2 7-9.30.

I can honestly say that I haven't come across a single Evans listener. I wonder why Rolling Eyes

Maybe the report was a last ditch attempt to try to hike up the figures. Trying to make people tune back to see if it's improved before the RAJAR measurement period closes.

Interesting he took the time off with no worries what so ever. I reckon the BBC knew then they were comfortable. To keep the listeners happy and listening, put someone in replace with a good listener rappor - Richard Allinson. It was a obvious Richard would have got a big response. I don't think there is a problem with Chris at breakfast. I really don't know what all the fuss is about. I would certaintly keep your nails on your fingers. Laughing

How can you say "mass alienation of the blue rinse mob", Colin B?
The non stop modern pop music alienated that section of the listenership ages ago, not Chris Evans.
Anyway I for one enjoy Chris's show and know a lot of people who do.
The music on the show has a lot more variety than the other daytime shows too.

I was referring specifically to my mum's WI group.

Perhaps, but the clever mix that featured in Wogan's show didn't.

On the rare occasion that I've heard (not listened) to the show I agree that the music has been quite reasonable. It's all the nonsense in between the music that's my problem.

However, I'm not denying others their pleasures at Breakfast - I just don't know anybody personally that intentionally listens. Even the bloke who owns the corner shop near me has retuned to Heart FM (Milton Keynes). Desperate, you have to admit!

Evans will not be allowed to fail! The R2 management have spent too much preparing the listeners for a toned - down Evans ( never happened - just the same old same old) and advertising with the Wogan seal of approval.

The BBC has a problem - Kids listen to commercial radio and there is no-one to groom them for the joys of radio for intellegent adults.

I've had a different experience with people I know. Whilst I know many people who have moved away from Radio 2, I have met a fair few that now listen because of Chris. It worried me when one person said in all seriousness, "He's better than that bloke who was on before... who was he again?" - That's us youths for you - our memory has been slain by the fast moving age we live in.

It's irrelevant whether he is a success or failure -- I can't stand him or his show so it's not for me. My efforts to "Listen Again" to Sarah whilst Evans is on have been thwarted as her show is rarely, if ever, available on time - I have just sent a complaint to the i-player dept asking them to explain.

BGW said that Evans "won't be allowed to fail" too true! - since I have never met anyone who has been asked what they listen to, I have zero faith in the audience figures. I certainly don't know anyone who listens to Evans!

On the BBC Radio 2 website, the show is billed "the interactive show for all the family". If that isn't a disincentive for rational human beings to avoid it then I don't know what is!
