We are back from holiday today.

When planning our trip I phoned our local cab company and asked for the price of a cab to take us from our house to Gatwick Airport and to pick us again 10 days later. They quoted me £160 all in.

Instead we drove to the airport ourselves, organised for a firm to pick up car at Gatwick arrivals and for it to then be taken to a long term car park, and on return for our car to be waiting for us at arrivals again. The price of the service was £60. Allowing for the price of petrol/Dartford Tolls etc -around £23, total cost £83 we think we have made a saving of around £77.

My wife has advised we won't be using the local cab firm to take us to the airport again.

I always use off-airport parking, whether it's at Heathrow, Gatwick or even Luton (which is just down the road from us). In fact, this reminds me to book parking for Luton because I'm off to Portugal in less than two weeks!

We always use "meet and greet" facilities too, latterly Happy Days. At Heathrow Terminal 5 the airport have sensibly now allocated a very large area for this facility, up on the 4th or 5th floor, so you don't get that frantic period when you arrive early and have to keep dodging the wardens in the drop off area or driving round the block.

Similarly, on our return, we didn't have to ring the pick up firm and hang around in the cold waiting for them to arrive. The pick up firm had checked the arrival times and our car was already parked up and waiting. We were out of the airport and on our way home in no time.

We are off on a trip to the US in less than two weeks..
Our preferred method lately is to drive to a hotel and stay the night before we fly, then take the shuttle to the airport - Heathrow on this occasion.
Our car remains in the Hotel car park until our return.
Seems to work ok apart from the last time when I found a nice cosy corner in the park for our Cherokee.. under a tree.
Upon our return, it was covered in Bird's doings! Laughing

The staying overnight caper is my wife's choice whereas I would rather hire a car for the one way trip.... the only down side of this are the miserable sods at the car hire place.
