I was looking forward to this, but it was so slow that eventually I gave up and had an early night. I was hoping to see Sue Johnston as the older Billie Piper (which seemed like a brilliant piece of casting) but lost interest before she took up the story line.

Did anyone else watch it? How was it?

Yes, we watched it. I thought it was really good - very moody and evocative of the austere 50s. Billie Piper is developing into a fine actress.

Given that it was a flashback in which the central object was the dress, it ended up where it started with Sue Johnston (as the older Betty) wearing it to rekindle memories of the Polish guy.

The second part, which features Sue much more, is on next Sunday. I'll be in Portugal so I'll have to catch it on satellite.

It did move a bit slowly at the start, so it's not surprising if people gave up on it. But it certainly picked up later on, enough to make me want to see next week's episode.

I gave up and watched Everybody Hates Chris!

I may be prejudiced against Billie Piper being the former Mrs. Chris Evans.

I thought she mastered the northern accent very well. And I agree, she is developing into a very good actress.

I thought it was good, making a refreshing change from the usual soaps and cops stories. More like this please BBC!

Although such filmed drama costs a heap of dosh to make, there's no doubt that not having to fork out for Wossie's inflated fee from July will free up so more valuable cash for quality programming.

Radio 2 Controller take note.......

Saw the second, concluding, episode of this last night.

For the most part it made EastEnders look positively carefree by comparison but it managed to achieve an unexpectedly happy(ish) ending.

Sue Johnston was ace, of course, and Barbara Marten (late of Casualty) was superb as the hard-as-nails husband killer Moira.
