I don't think we'll bother now, actually. We're contemplating on a drive down to Devon to see the folks for a few days.

Sounds like SFF at least will get away as he's leaving tomorrow and I think I just heard the airports will resume at 7.00am. That's assuming his plane is in the right place of course!! Bad luck ColinB! Have a nice time in Devon.

.... at the very earliest. Monarch Airlines told us about an hour ago that this is "optimistic" at best. I think the PR people have been at work again.

We've now cancelled and have asked for a refund. For the first time in many years we bought flights and accomodation in a single package due to the low price. The only problem is that it was to be part-work part-pleasure but what the heck.........

Anyway, the weather forecast is for rain in the Algarve, whereas the weather's fab where my folks live just outside Plymouth so we've decided to head down there early Friday morning.

Cool Ah this is the life.. gazing over the twinkling sea, glorious sunshine, KYA SanFrancisco on the radio..............
and all in Norfolk too! Sad Laughing

Yes, we didn't get to fly either...

Spent a night at the Sheraton next to Heathrow ready to fly on the Friday but I think we both knew we weren't going anywhere.

We booked another night but after a call to Virgin, we were told the next flight opportunity would be Wednesday so we cancelled the room after one hour ( and got a full refund too which surprised me) and travelled home again.

I'm not so sure we'll be going Wednesday either from the look of things. Pity really as we cold still fit all our special dates in even after a late arrival but we'll have to see how mother nature treats us.

At least our Newf was pleased to be home early... Razz

Was thinking of you and wondering how you were doing!

Friends of my Dad were due to go to Mexico on Friday but they decided to get the refund and see what happens.

I've had to postpone for a day or maybe it was 2, due to a hurricane and it's horrible. Had to evacuate during a hurricane as well but that's another story.

I think I'd be glad I hadn't gone because this could last for weeks.

Thanks Helen, that's my gut feeling too. I'm not so bothered about it but Mrs SFF is really upset. She's the one who does ALL the organising ( as I suspect it's the case with most partnerships! ) so it's particularly upsetting for her.
The only thing I'd be upset about is missing a special steam trip from LA down to San Diego which has cost us a lot so I guess we'll lose out on that plus, I really wanted to see this locomotive in action..

We've had to cancel everything for the second time now.. but managed to book ourselves a regular "flight only" scheduled for Wednesday week.

I thought things were looking up until this morning, when I heard the news about further dust cloud activity! so not so sure again..

Oh well, this would be the last chance to make the more important dates we had planned over there so if it's cancelled again we'll give up.

From what I gather, we'll be insured for everything including my steam train trip so at least that's good news.

One thing caught us out this morning, it appears you're only allowed one suitcase for the hold since September 2009. Extra cases will cost £30.
We've got four packed...

How long are you going for and can you not get a larger case?

Must admit we take 2 large ones and a wheelie for hand luggage and I always carry a change of clothes in my hand luggage, even if it's just shorts, T shirt and sandals.

Fingers crossed for you once again.

There's a weight limit and, a dimension limit too ( 81" max... length times girth or something.. ) so we'll have to check what we have.
At the moment we have two large cases and two medium cases ( all with wheels Razz what a great idea. ) plus two hand bags - ducky Laughing

We hope to be away for three weeks.

Ooops. Our allowance on European flights has been 15Kg of late, so we now minimise contents where possible. It's interesting to see the size of the bags some people take on board as hand luggage, however!

A lot of hotels and smaller establishments have laundry rooms with dryers and irons if you ask (they are often in the wardrobe anyway). I always take too much and the States are sooo casual!

I think after 25 years of visits I've just about got it right. Even now I pack then pull out some items! I always take too many shoes + I end up buying some over there........... Imelda moments!

That's what I remind Mrs SFF of, she always see's clothes she likes over there so take the bare minimum and stock up there!
She does a lot of laundry whilst on holiday, in fact the laundry room is the first thing in the Hotels she locates!
At a couple of Dollars for a decent T shirt, you can almost buy, wear and throw away!

That's exactly what I do, SFF. I usually pack only 3 or 4 t-shirts/polo shirts, a couple of pairs of shorts, etc., and then buy what I need when I'm away.

That leaves plenty of room for (a) laptop, (b) DSLR camera, (c) HD camcorder, (c) iPod/iPhone (d) camera tripod, books..... etc etc! Smile

Something to pass on to Mrs SFF. It's the US Mother's day May 9 so there will be sales and special offers on loads of things that you wouldn't necessarily think of buying for your Mother!

In other words bargains! Smile I had an email from a US store I've bought from reminding me of it!

Back again.. Razz
Bit worried about the ash cloud as reported in the US back it didn't present a problem. In fact I'm sure the Virgin Hostess said they had taken a more southerly route than usual. ( the return flight took 9 hours 27 minutes )

Great holiday with lots of sights, thrills and 3,200 miles of driving.
Bit disappointed we didn't get to Lake Tahoe as, following heavy snowfalls, the Police were turning away motorists without snow chains, so we spent more time in Frisco than planned.

Highlight for me was without doubt a superb steam train trip from Los Angeles to San Diego during which we were treated like Royalty by the organisers! Embarassed but it's a day I won't forget. A huge Santa Fe steamer pulling fourteen cars including those beautiful stainless steel "Vista Dome" cars. The view from the dome of the "Pacific hugging route" was just gorgeous.
Got to talk with some fascinating "train men" from the days of Southern Pacific and the Santa Fe and even got to blow the whistle of a "Big Boy" locomotive.. something I never thought I'd ever do! ( bit sad I know.. )

Mrs SF was equally pleased as she got to see plenty of horse action and at one show, I was thrilled to find I was 10 feet away from William Shatner! ( I'm a big Star Trek fan ) I couldn't believe I was seeing Captain Kirk for real Laughing He was taking part in the show.

Also visited a town called Petaluma where they were holding an "American Graffiti" celebration weekend. We both loved the film and the event was attended by hundreds of fans and their cars, including some of the original cars and cast from the film. It was a great atmosphere, obviously with full Police cooperation and the night cruise was incredible.

Weather temp ranged from 97 in Vegas to low 60s in San Francisco ( I had to buy a coat! )
We also experienced San Francisco fog for the first time too.. very strange, as it practically disappears once you drive over the Golden Gate!

Excellent holiday but sooo glad to get home to rescue our Newfie from the Kennels!!

Biggest disappointment - hearing Chris Tarrant covering for Wrighty on the drive back from Heathrow! Laughing

Sante Fe,

What a great time you have had! To be with so much that you enjoy, and your missus with you AND approves! Laughing

Some places in USA are really great. We (Mrs W and 2 kids) lived there for two years in Cleveland. Not much in Cleveland but so easy to get to places of interest, in Ohio and elsewhere e.g. drove to Yellowstone and Rockies and back in one three week holiday, and so easy to fly to Florida, Washington DC, New York, Chicago etc.

Never got west of the Rockies and never once set foot on a train in US in those 2 years but I would certainly have enjoyed where you were!

Thanks John.. yes, as we don't have kids, our holidays are generally highlighted with horse events and trains and as you suggest - I'm very lucky to have a wife who "puts up" with my interests without complaint..
In fact, we were just saying how lucky we are in that we "get on" so well whilst on holiday.

I'd like to see more of the "upper East" of the US soon, New England for example and of course New York itself. Maybe a long train trip could be good.. across the Rockies is supposed to be fabulous!

Sounds like a fantastic trip SanteFe! What a shame you couldn't get to Lake Tahoe though. We went 2nd week of September and when we got to Virginia City not that far away there were snowflakes which sent our friend, who lived at Walnut Creek on the way out to Sacremento, almost delirious as she'd not seen snow for 20 years!

There is a big railroad museum in Baltimore, we went to a reception there about 15 years ago and they were amazing. I'll see if I can find some photos for you.

I hope Mrs SF had time for some shopping although the exchange rate isn't so good just now!

We're both in that strange Zombie world now where we wish we were back there but have to knuckle down to the jobs in hand here.. I've decided I don't travel very well! it takes me a week to get back to normal..

Baltimore & Ohio was a major Railroad so I'd imagine the museum would be great to visit. The one in Sacramento is very good but I've been so many times now maybe I should look elsewhere.
I have a feeling Tahoe will be on the agenda later in the year as I've heard so many good things about it.

Yes, I had to endure several Malls and shopping Plazas. I usually just wait outside the shops and "people watch".
I'll never understand why females have to visit soooo many clothes shops!
We didn't go over the top in terms of buying stuff this time.. maybe 20 items of clothes between us. Had to buy yet another suitcase from Walmart however.

Best buy of the trip... an American TomTom at $119.. we don't usually have a problem in getting around but this really made it a breeze! Petrol stations, favourite restaurants, Walmarts, hotels - straight to the door! fantastic.
I'd even dare to drive long distances on my own with this device!

Yes Colin, whenever I've been to a large Mall I still cling on to the hope that something there will be of interest to me but it very rarely happens.. Laughing
I just don't see the business logic in providing so many clothing stores - like 98% in one Mall.. surely they can't all expect to survive!
Still, gives me a chance to rest m' plates! Laughing

Hello, SF - good to see you back and I'm glad you had a great time in the end.

Now, everyone says that it's well worth buying clothes, and certain other things, in the US, presumably because they're relatively cheap (depending on how the exchange rate is), well-made, and different to what you can get here. 98% of the mall devoted to ladies clothing does seem to be a bit extreme, though - but they can't be all the same, surely. What sometimes bugs me about escorting OH round the shops here is that they nearly all sell the same stuff, that came off the slow boat from China, it's pretty skimpy or poorly made, and after three hours of going round in circles she goes back and picks something from the first shop we went in.

Hi SF

It takes me at least a week to get back to normal when we've been to America. You really want to be back there don't you!

My O/H does exactly the same as you at the malls, although if we are in Florida there is a Mall right by Tampa airport so he drops me and goes off to photograph aircraft and we meet up later. It works well but there aren't many so close!

We now take a spare sports bag that we bought over there folded flat in the case when we go to as I've no room for anymore suitcases!

Our TomTom does the states as well and is brilliant.

With high-street fashion cycles now down to about 3 months it doesn't really matter that clothing materials aren't long-lasting. My wife has a friend who's a clothing buyer for one of the (very) large retailers and she says that turnaround is quicker than a blink of an eye - and far-eastern suppliers have to be ready to respond on a just-in-time order basis accordingly.

Thanks Ron..
Well perhaps 98% was a tad exaggerated Laughing but certainly the majority of shops are female attire orientated.. endless clothes plus, shoe shops, bag shops, perfume shops, sun glass outlets, Levi store etc.
Mrs SF says the "name brands" are cheaper in her opinion plus a much wider choice is available in general.
She bought a few pairs of "Cruel Girl" jeans for $60 which would have been £60 over here apparently.
I bought a quality "Sherpa lined" western style mid length jacket from a Western equipment outlet for $55.. a real bargain I thought - just right for winter, plus a reasonable quality "hoody" jacket for $17.
Another thing I like about shopping at Walmart is for their T shirts! I have a long back apparently and most of the T shirts I buy here shrink after the first wash so they're not long enough!
The US ones are nice and long, a good quality ( Fruit of the Loom ) and have a little breast pocket for glasses too at $4 each.

As a side, one of the most ridiculous things I saw was at the "Las Vegas Premium Outlets" - an open air plaza type shopping centre.
Every 100 feet or so outside, there is a metal pole with about 5 heads on the top dispensing continuous misted water vapour which drifts down to the ground... presumably so people can feel the benefit of the cool mist?
I tried it and could hardly feel anything.
Yes, it was hot but I really thought these were a complete waste of effort and energy!
