You think Evans is getting it in the neck for taking over from Chiles. Steve Rider is apparently taking legal action against ITV after Chiles has taken over his prime spot for the foote coverage.

Quote:
Axed Rider set to sue

Steve Rider, ruthlessly replaced yesterday by Adrian Chiles as the football face of ITV, is understood to be considering legal action.

Rider, who joined ITV in 2005, seems to have a strong case as it is believed his £500,000-a-year contract states that he will be the No 1 football presenter for ITV at the World Cup. Now he won't be going to South Africa and the £1m-a-year Chiles will front the tournament coverage as well as their England, Champions League and FA Cup games.

Chiles's appointment looks to have been instigated by ITV boss Peter Fincham, especially as controller of sport Niall Sloane never used Chiles for live-match presentation when head of football at the BBC. ITV say both Fincham and Sloane wanted Chiles on board and they are discussing a new contract with Rider.

However, the treatment of Rider, who is 60 this month, is similar to the experience of Jim Rosenthal, who was also dramatically downgraded on reaching 60.

I saw that this morning. Can't say I blame him but he's almost 60 and apparently ITV did the same thing to Jim Rosenthal when he was that age.

I never thought Rosenthal was much cop - he was the master of the obvious, stupid question and seemed to have little knowledge of the sport or participants he was commenting on or interviewing.

Steve Rider is an anchor, in the mould of Frank Bough or David Coleman, just a bit bland.

Adrian Chiles spent a long time hidden away on BBC2's Working Lunch before springing to prominence. He was good at that, and interviewing business people from our, the consumer's standpoint. While he's been OK in the MotD2 slot, and at sparring with the guests and Christine Bleakely on The One Show, I'm not convinced of his prowess at the deeper end of things.

You blaming the messenger for this. It's not Chris fault Adrian is leaving.

MArk, if you read the thread carefully you'll see that people's concerns are that the BBC's senior management are showing increasing signs of arrogance of late, and the way Evans' services are being utilised is becoming a major bone of contention - not just among listeners and viewers but by members of the press, too.

Of course it's not Evans' fault that Chiles has thrown in the towel, but he seems quite happy to jump in and steal the limelight regardless of the damage that it does. That's Evans for you..........

I think the first time I saw Adrian Chiles was when he did a series which allowed him to follow business people for a day or maybe 2 from their homes. Eddie Jordan was one and a famous female hairdresser was another, I forget her name. Must have been about 7 years or more ago.

Des Lynam had the same problems at ITV and left at the age of 62. You have to be honest ITV havn't had the same sports rights as the BBC have. Chiles will have to be wary of this, similar to Steve rider when they lost F1 to BBC. ITV only have two seasons of Champsions League, FA Cup and England Matches. There is no guarantee ITV will have the same contracts in three years.

But ITV PLC is a different business to what it was even three years ago. Peter Fincham has a good track record as a channel manager (he was poached from the BBC where he helped to turn things around - and was the person credited with coming up with The One Show) and within the industry there's a feeling that he can do the same with a beleagered ITV1.

Sport is, of course, a challenge, and any terrestrial broadcaster has to fight to survive against the might of the Murdoch Mafia, but recent changes in OfCom's rules might help that situation.

Chiles is a very good sports presenter and if anyone can help to boost ratings then he can - and it's ratings that count when trying to sell advertising and sponsorship both on-air and on the website.

Chris apparently taunts Adrian on his Radio 2 show. I think the media are blowing something about a non story.

I don't think it is a "non story" Mark.
I had the misfortune to hear him on the breakfast show the other morning talking for far too long on who should replace Adrian Chiles. He spoke as though it would be influenced by what he thinks!
I though it very insensitive and he should be disciplined for it.
What an idiot. This is Chris Evans at his worst.

This subject has been covered at length on the Radio2 board.

I didn't hear it but I'd say it was bad taste (I'd say the same whoever was doing it if they were involved, as CE is).

It isn't a "non-story", it's a story about a certain self-obsessed and arrogant twit called Chris Evans who is, yet again, being very, very stupid.
