I wonder if Mark Radcliffe is going to do another solo show today (Stuart was stuck in Italy yesterday) And if Chris Hawkins (of 6 music) has got back yet. There was a stand-in doing his very early show on Monday.

The upside of the "volcanic dust" fiasco (and one which led to my wife and I having to abort a holiday in Portugal!) is that Richard Allinson has been standing in for Steve Wright. His shows have, as to be expected, been consistently good all week - much better than those his have replaced.

The opposite of "downside", which would be the equivalent of Steve Wright not being stranded in the US!

Cool

Hi ColinB,

Each to his own view and I can see an upside to SW being stuck in the US but replacing his old format show of reading out endless factoids which he done since the 80s with a standin format of readings bits like surveys from the papers and reading endless text responses to stupid questions has no upside to me.

Richard was in good form covering for Steve Wright last week.

At least it was live radio plus Richard does not sing over the records.

How else would you get the listeners to take part in the shows?

Well forgive me if I state the obvious Mark, but a listener is someone who listens. A participant is someone who does not particularly want to listen, but prefers to have others listen to them. A radio presenter is someone who links the music, hopefully adding something of value to the proceedings, not a ring master, not a Butlin's Redcoat and not a game show host.

That's the way it always seemed to me. Though not, sadly, any more. Rolling Eyes

You're making the assumption that "interactivity" (the current media buzzword) is a pre-requisite of all radio shows. I disagree with that notion.

It's also a byword for "free source material". Just look at the trend for "social media" on the web; YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, a million web forums........ etc etc....... all exist to get free content from users whilst profiting from sponsorship and advertising. YouTube is a perfect example of that - a massive money-spinner for Google yet all its users provide the content free of charge!

Unfortunately, broadcast media use the same model to the detriment of programming; I don't care if the commercial networks do it but I really object to BBC networks becoming almost entirely dependent on "listener interaction".

The R2 breakfast show is billed as "interactive fun for all the family" (or something equally banal). A very good case in point, in my humble opinion, and a perfect reason for my continuing to avoid it!

A measure of a good radio presenter is someone who can do a show for the duration without having to fall back on the never-ending stream of props that are texted, emailed and phoned-in my listeners, in my opinion.

RIP John Peel. His style of radio is sorely missed!
