Alex is off on his American Adventure next week, and will be off for 4 weeks. He mentioned on his show this morning that Tim Smith is doing the show for 2 weeks, and Lynn Parsons for 2 weeks.

Ah, next week, it comes around so quickly. With Alex being away in the USA trying to eat himself to death.. (when in Rome etc), for a month, I guess there’s nothing for it but to disappear off to Cornwall until he gets back. Although there is always his brilliant AA blog which on previous American Adventures, he’s updated pretty much daily, so for me it’s, do I stay here where I can read his blog or do I go to Cornwall where I have no internet, radio or TV? Tim Smith is quite good, he even played a request for me last time Alex was away but I’m not sure he’s as good as a month of surf-canoeing in the sun, and I may get one of those phones that can do the interweb thing … win win!! I digress. Alex mentioned that he’s wearing only white clothes while on holiday, and he’ll be driving a large open top car… after a couple of weeks of “do you want extra fries with that” he’ll be like Boss Hogg only with hair! Last time he went to the US he put on so much weight he had his own gravitational field ( that's what makes him so attractive)– NASA was tracking him! It’s gonna be blubberwatch big-style when he gets back. I can’t wait. I have a thing for men with a bouncy tummy, don't you? Smile

Great news that Lynn Parsons is covering for AL whilst he is off.

Hopefully Lynn might be considered as the full time replacement for Mr Lester when he finally decides to leave etc.

I’m not sure that RA is good enough to stand in for Alex or even if he were,( and that’s a very big if) he’d have the stamina to do 5 early mornings in a row- he’s a bit of a lightweight really, ok for the odd fill-in here and there but nothing substantial.

Radio 2 without Alex is like Cornwall during poor weather, it’s still Cornwall, it still has all of its nice cliffs, coastal walks and other attractions, it’s just they aren’t very appealing in the rain. Alex is the sunshine that transforms Radio 2 to a beautiful place.

No , Alex is going on holiday; four-weeks may seem like a lifetime to some ( insects mainly- they have very short lives) but he'll be back as brilliant as ever in less time than elapses between mortgage payments.

Interestingly, some species of insect will have Great Great Great Great Great Geat grandchildren by the time Alex gets back but those insects crawling around at the moment with a glint in their eye will be insect-world historical heros by then, although just Hoover-dust in ours. It's a tough old life init!

Like many, many broadcasters (and even technicians), Lynn is freelance, full stop. When you're freelance (like wot I am) you live from one contract to another - and nobody pays for the time in between.
