Alas, those days are gone. Radio has changed - and generally not for the better. The planned closure of 6Music is a clear indication of where BBC senior managers' heads are - in Cloud Cuckoo Land!

Who are the nearest to John Peel nowadays? I'd suggest maybe Bob Harris & Steve Lamacq. Any more offers? John Peel's lad Tom Ravenscroft can be heard deputising for others on 6 music sometimes.
Don't take the 6 music closure as gospel yet Protests are still happening (demo outside Broadcasting house planned for May 22nd: http://www.love6music.com/)
If you can't make that, you can still have your say here: https://consultations.external.bbc.co.uk/departments/bbc/bbc-strategy-review/consultation/consult_view

So what are you saying then Angus, that the independent body, RAJAR are manipulating the figures to keep Bob Shennan happy?
I understand people not liking someone, but you need to calm down a bit.
The people who don't like Chris say the RAJARS mean nothing, so why are you getting het up about it?

I don't dislike Chris Evans personally. It's just that the format of the Breakfast Show is totally wrong for the majority of the R2 demographic.

It's childish and too frenetic, especially when compared to the more laid back approach of the standins, of which incidentally, there have been too many of since Chris took over. Nobody needs that amount of holidays since January.

I think it's more a case of Bob Shennan manipulating the figures than Rajar manipulating Bob Shennan. What did Bob do? Ask Rajar to hand out the forms to school children and middle aged housewives and ask them to fill them out when their dads/husbands weren't looking?

This is just indicative of the way Radio2 are heading. Alan Carr's show is another example. These dreadful radio formats exist all over local radio stations which thankfully I don't listen to because of that very reason.

I've every right to be angry. It's not about the license fee. Chris Evans is welcome to the squillionth of a penny he gets from me because that is all the show is worth. I'm happy to contribute to the funding of the excellent dramas on the BBC and all the other worthwhile radio shows on the station but I will not accept the legitimacy of these figures as I believe they have been doctored to justify the hiring of Chris Evans who has now taken three peoples jobs since his return to the limelight. The first two bowed out gracefully, Adrian Chiles, bless him was not so diplomatic and rightly so.

And as for baying sycophants, I stand by what I said. Chris Evans cannot work unless he is surrounded by Yes Men. Johnny(sp?) Saunders has become progressively worse since the move to Breakfast. Others are not so willing. When Bobbie Pryor was sitting in a few weeks back and was introduced to the Hello/Goodbye feature her response was "and I've got two weeks of this". That speaks volumes I'm afraid.

Does anyone know what the current figures for "Drivetime" are?

Yep, Mayo's up - first quarter this year, averaged 5.64 million, up from 5.29 million the previous quarter and 5.24 the first quarter of 2009. So in my totally non-scientific estimate, if Mayo can beat Evans' figures, he could beat Evans at breakfast!!! Razz

Yes, I stand by what you say about Evans being absolutely dependent upon his "human props". A look back through his broadcasting career will clearly demonstrate this to be true - I don't ever recall a radio or TV show in which he's on his own and relating to his audience on a one-to-one basis.

The reason for that, I suspect, is because he simply can't do it.

Simon Mayos figures can't be up igs007, surely they are being manipulated just like the figures for Chris Evans?
Oh I forgot, people only say figures are manipulated if they don't tally with their personal opinions.

Manipulate the figures? Gosh no! Not us. We have however, recently incorporated a new counting system which takes account of all those people who when asked, say they don’t listen, but we know that they do. It’s part of a brilliant new management tool set( funded by the licence payer) which guarantees that we meet our targets, thus demonstrating to the licence payer that their money is…… well; spent.

PS , I'm back from my holiday. Yay! Chris is back too... It feels good to be back, but better than that, it sounds good to be back!

I'm sure the figures are accurate. I'm just glad these radio-listening devices have "off" buttons, that's all!

Now now Mr Cynic, don't shoot the messenger! I got those figures off Mediaguardian so I'm pretty sure they're right, unless of course the Guardian are anti-Evans and manipulated the figures in Mayo's favour, so much so that no one actually noticed last Thursday because everyone was fawning over dearest Christoff.... Cool

Besides, I read that Moyles managed to 'find' an extra 1 million listeners which puts him over the 9 million mark (official 'reason' - under 15s listening which aren't counted in RAJARs...what about the millions of under 15s listening to Evans?!!!) Wink

Well, I have to say that I'm one who helps to make up the first statistic regarding the numbers who listen to Moyles - even though my listening is only occasional.

As for the under-15s listening to Evans, that's probably because their parents force them to under threat of a reduction in pocket money! Smile

I know that my support for Chris’ move to the Breakfast Show was scant at best but you know, I missed him while he was holiday; yesterday for example, we were still on holiday and about 08:10…. I said …. Oh Chris Evans is back today … and on he went on my little toaster radio … and this morning .. we were having breakfast back here at home at 08:00 .. then after the news , with a mouthful of toast – just before the Monday Tuesday Wednesday… jingle …. I did a little Chris impression…I said “ here we go”! and then joined in with the jingle and even managed a little( to my hubby’s complete confusion) sort of chair dance to the jingle…I know, I know, there’s no excuses, maybe it’s a mid-life thing but the new breakfast show just feels like home now. It’s like a warm friendly protective blanket that shelters you from the storm of life.

You could say that for certain about Wogan, but if Evans' show is any kind of a blanket it belongs in the stables, along with the stuff on the floor of same!

Trouble is that some blankets are made of that horrible hard wool that are as irritating as hell....

I dont think for one minute they have manipulated the figures, they have simply decided to find new listeners and dump the old ones.

Finding approx 5 to 7 million to listen to a show out of a population of >60m obviously can't be that hard to do when you have a national psb radio station, and a public which seems to like this 'pop' type of stuff, 19 million watch x-factor etc Rolling Eyes and millions watch celebs trying to dance Rolling Eyes

R2 has changed its target audience, and is changing still, sadly away from what I like.

I too have thought that for some time.

The way things are going 3/4 of the population will fairly soon have no music radio station to listen to.

Discussing on another forum regarding Radio 1 poor performance in London, with Radio 4 has a strong performance in the Capital, I do wonder which parts of the country Chris breakfast show has the strongest listeners?

I know BBC National stations are not really based for the London target, but I do beleive the outer regions people are tuning not just on DAB or FM, but on TV IE Sky and Freeview. This is why a lot of London stations like Capital and Magic are getting huge listener figures.

I guess there might be a correlation with sales of spinach, Mark. Definitely worth investigating.

Does 'Cloud Cuckoo Land' count as outer regions?
