I didn't watch Britain's Got Talent on ITV last night, but it can't have been much worse than what followed it, which I more or less had to, in the company of wife and mother/mother-in-law.

An Audience With Michael Bublé

For a start, the "Sound Supervisor" and all his team should be docked pay for either sleeping on the job or not turning up at all.

The sound quality of the music was awful, and I've heard of canned laughter, but I didn't realise that they also used canned "clap-along". Such can be the only explanation for a hysterical audience seen clapping along to a song off-beat, and in one instance heard but seen to be completely motionless.

Bublé himself sounded as though he was singing in a tunnel, or down a large drainpipe, which could be a more appropriate comparison, since his diction was so bad that what he was singing was unintelligble and it might just have well been consigned to the sewer.

Which is where most of the celebrity drooling and questions, and his responses, seemed to come from. I won't repeat it, but I would be ashamed to say what he did in front of Fern Britton's 13-year old daughter.

A dreadful show, but, hey, probably a great money-spinner for beleaguered ITV. They managed to squeeze in four commercial breaks - I liked the ad for The Very Best Of Billy Joel, "including the original of She's Always A Woman To Me"

I hate those "Audience with" shows - they're so contrived. Questions are scripted, and the whole thing is cringeworthy. Watching last night's South Bank Show featuring Victoria Wood, they showed a clip of her "Audience with" from 1988 in which she mocked all the celebs down where the cameras can see them, and then referred to "all the people on a coach trip from Guildford at the back where the cameras can't see them" which I thought was very funny.

My wife, a life-long devotee of Rod Stewart, was offered tickets to an afternoon "insert recording" session for Rod Stewart's "Audience with" last year. Although the main show was recorded at The London Studios on a Saturday evening, they were taping an insert in which Rod would perform "Handbags & Gladrags" with Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics that afternoon.

We couldn't get to the recording, but wished we had because when we saw the transmission a week or so later it was obvious that there were only a couple of hundred of people immediately in front of the stage with the rest of the studio seating unoccupied and just out of camera shot.

(BTW - We saw him at the Birmingham NIA on Saturday. I've lost count of the number of Rod Stewart gigs I've seen in the last 30+ years, but it's a lot!)

I didn't bother to watch as I was so sick of the trailers for it, with Dermot O' Really in the audience!
