I've been so enjoying listening to Radio Caroline on Shoutcast this morning (whilst doing my accounts, yuck) and I forgot that TB is doing a 60s show all morning.

Oh well. I'll give it a turn on iPlayer tomorrow when I'll also be doing... my accounts!

I think it's been great so far.. why oh why can't we have Tony on Radio 2 where he belongs?
I'm hoping this 4 hour show will fit on my SD card which will go nicely with those 3 hour British Songbook shows of the 60s, 70s and 80s earlier in the year... Razz

Isn't it great to hear a real DJ! My mum has just phoned to check I was listening, we used to have arguments at breakfast over whether it was Radio 1 (TB) or Radio 2, (Wogan's predecessor I expect). She said 'doesn't he sound nice'!!

It impresses me that you all knew who I was referring to!

"Timmy Bannockburn" was the nickname that John Peel gave to Mr. Blackburn when they both worked on BigL (Radio London) in the 60s and he continued to use this through his time on Radio One.

I look forward to listening to the show tomorrow (Tues).

Enjoy the show on iplayer ColinB, Tony was great, still the top man for pop DJing, he should have a Radio 2 daytime show.

... eventually. Brian's got a good few years left in him at the moment.

Tony, and Ed Stewart, were fine in their day, and they're fine for holiday weekend specials - Tony was a great fan of 60s and 70s Motown, soul and r&b wasn't he, I'm sure he'd love to do four hours of that.

He was a big Motown fan and he said he was amazed that there wasn't a single track amongst the top 60 selling tracks of the 60s. He even asked if he could slip one in!

But for some reason it didn't seem to matter. I suppose it depends what is being said.

Yes and a lot of it was waffle but it was TONY BLACKBURN, the man, the definitive version of a pop DJ and in my opinion his voice is part of the soundtrack of an era and his talk-overs were always part of the music Smile

Anyone (other than Fluff) who did/does the same is a pest! Razz

Yes, my memory may be rose-tinted, but Alan Freeman used to have the voice-over-the-record down to a fine art, and shut up just before the vocal started. Some very fine intros may have been lost in doing so, but nothing of the song.

Everyone else, then and since, has been much more careless, and most couldn't care less - just listen to Dale Winton.

Tony Blackburn today was just like he's always been - a lot of waffle; aren't you glad there were only three records by "Gentleman Jim" Reeves? It's nice to hear him occasionally and remember old times, but everyone would soon be throwing bricks if we had him back on general daytime radio.

Talking over intros right up to the first lyric, and also talking over the end-fade (and then over the mix to the next track) is an old US radio "Boss Jock" technique that came over here with AFN, Luxembourg and then BigL Radio London. Actually, the first of the pirates to adopt this was Swinging Radio England, the station which imposed upon a young man called Peter Dingley his professional name of "Johnnie Walker" simply because a set of name-check carts were the only ones not spoken for!

I remember being at school in 1967 and talking about the new Radio One's breakfast presenter; one of my mates (Trev!) used to moan like hell about the way Blackburn talked over the intros. Here he is on BBC radio 43 years later and still doing it!

Funnily enough, as a 60s throwback technique I don't really object to it now (let's be honest, at the time it was a demonstration of a DJ's skill just like backtiming a record to end bang on the news jingle on the top of the hour was) but when irritants like Evans talk over music that's just downright annoying because........... well, it just is.

Helen, I have to confess to listening to about 8 minutes of the Chris "2 hours of Interactive Fun for all the Family" Evans Breakfast Show this morning. He kicked off with Lennon's "Instant Karma" and then Ringo's "Photograph", so I allowed the radio to stay on. As soon as Evans opened his gob at the end of the second I reached for the off switch and went back to sleep (my infinitely superior other half, Mrs B, gets up just before the 7.00am news, hence the fact that the alarm-clock radio is still on, you see). Silence is golden when there's bugger-all to listen to on the radio!

There's still something about Evans' voice and broadcasting style that, er, annoys the hell out of me. Sorry folks, it just does!

Just listening to Tony Blackburn's 4-hour marathon right now as I battle with my accounts. The pace of the show is fabulous!

I was never much of a fan of his during his Radio 1 breakfast days even though I did listen to him as soon as my Dad left for work (he used to listen to Jack deManio on Radio 4), but I have to say I'm really enjoying his energetic yet apparently effortless style. The original (though modified) sixties power jingles are great, too.

He'd be great on a Saturday afternoon show!

Can I expect to hear Arnold, I wonder? At the end maybe?

Sounded like he received many emails during the show and, judging by his response, they were asking why such a great voice wasn't on Radio2 permanently... instead of the dross I'm listening to at the moment -- Zoe babbling, what did I just play? Ball.. Evil or Very Mad

He has been hinting..... I'm currently 1'28" into the programme. This is one of the best shows I've heard on R2 for ages.

The whole style of the show is reminiscent of 1960s radio. Fab!

I'm now at 2'33" now (and still up to my neck in accounting files).

What's amazing is there's loads of Beatles records in the top 60 (understandably, and I'm not complaining at all) but not a single Motown record. I was as staggered as TB himself was at learning that.

Helen and JohnW - I've just been reading your posts over on the R2MB. I agree with your posts about the show and am staggered at how many of the idiots who post (live?) there just don't get the point of this show. It might be a "lists" show but the way I see it is that it's a welcome celebration of the fabulous music that came out of the 60s as well as the style in which is was presented on the new radio stations that were born in that exciting decade. Then again, I guess those of us who experienced it will be biased in that viewpoint.

Helen - you rightfully commented on the remark by Peta (the Host) in her downbeat comments about the format. To be honest, I'm surprised she's slightly negative, given her obvious role as official PR mouthpiece of BBC Radio 2 and - of course - Chris "Interactive Fun for All The Family" Evans.

I'd post there myself but (a) my IP has been blocked for saying rude things about Lonegroover and Scott Nelson and (b) I can't be bothered anyhow!

Keep up the good work on my behalf. Smile

I noted the comments about lack of Motown stuff in that chart (none in fact!) even by Tony himself, knowing he's a fan of soul music, it must have hurt! I can only guess that maybe Motown was around in the second half of that decade and not the early part (at least not in the UK) The only negative thing I could say was that I didn't think they should have played those effects over the top of 'Telstar' by The Tornados. They should have done that either before or after the track.
How about Tony doing the same for the 1970s in August?

The Supremes had their number 1 hit in 64, Mary Wells also had My Guy earlier in the same year.

Thinking about why they didn't feature in the yesterday's chart, I can only think that the weeks where they were high in the charts not so many people were buying records. Also maybe they didn't linger in the charts as long as the others did.

Another way of doing this might have been to feature the best-selling record by each of the Top 60 acts, rather than load it up with many records by just a few. This could have allowed some Motown to be played, for it's difficult to imagine, say, the Supremes being absent from such a collection. But then we wouldn't have heard all those great Beatles ones!

Yes, a similar show for the 70s, hosted by TB, sounds like a worthwhile idea for August Bank Holiday.

Ian.

The BBC have listened and put blackburn on Radio2. Tony have a lot of Radio committments and I can't see him given those up unless Radio 2 offered him a full time show. He's the same age as Johnnie Walker and people were asking him to take over breakfast.

Radio 2 need real DJ's to host shows( EDIT like TONY), but a lot are committed to other radio station.
