I never had a Walkman, or any of its successors.

I was late to the i-pod and I have used it mainly to upload items from my record and CD collection to have something good to listen to, through a pair of speakers (a "sound-dock") or through the hifi instead of the radio at home, or when we're on holiday and out of range of decent radio.

For my birthday a couple of months ago I was given a decent pair of Sony earphones, as an encouragement to take it and listen while we're out walking - my wife, son and brother-in-law usually have theirs on.

But I find I can't get on with it and them outside. For a start, I must have odd-sized or shaped ears or ear'oles, because no matter which size of buds I use, or which way round I have them, they frequently slip out of the left one and I have to keep pushing it back in to get the proper depth of sound.

When they're in properly they do sound pretty good and they cancel most of the sound and noise outside. But I'm not terribly keen on that - I like to be aware of what's going on around me, like birds in the trees and animals in the fields, having warning of someone or something coming up behind me, like other walkers, or people on horses, or traffic on a country lane. And I know I'm not the world's most talkative person but conversation is impossible while they've got their 'phones in. Shouting yes, conversation no.

I'm not even terribly keen on music in the car - for the same reason of awareness, plus I think it can be very distracting.

(By complete contrast, my wife loves music and radio in the car and when we're out, but not at home! Rolling Eyes )

So I just wondered how everyone else felt. Do you like your fave sounds in your ear as you're walking or driving along, alone or in company, and how do you get on with those silly earphones?

Hi Ron,

I've decided I'm not much into listening to music on the move! I certainly don't walk around with earphones in my ears ever!

I don't have a Ipod, although I nearly bought one last year. I've a tiny (in GB terms and size) mp3 player which I filled up with some music I have on my PC for use on holidays. I used it once so I'm glad I saved my money for the time being anyway! It's not so much the earphones but the fact I like to hear the sound of the sea and birdlife while I'm on the beach.

I've a Walkman radio and a walkman minidisc player for which I've some small portable speakers. The radio always goes with me on holiday, although the choice of decent radio is diminishing if we are in the US.

As for music in the car the radio or CD player comes on with the ignition.

I recently changed my mobile phone, not much into them either, as I like to be out when I'm out! It's switched off more than it's on. It has 4GB memory and I keep meaning to load music on to that but I keep forgetting.........................

I can't stand ear-phones, I've got quite sensitive ears both sensory and physically, so I don't like music at such close quarters. Like Ron, I wouldn't walk around earplugged so that I can't hear what else is going on around me and more particularly behind me.

Sometimes for the gym I've recorded French/Spanish language tapes but I generally forget to take the MP3 with me.

Having said that, there's nothing I like better on a long drive than listening to the car radio, either music or news programmes. And there's nothing better than getting off a long-haul flight early in the morning after a few weeks away, tuning into Radio 2 and driving home.

Well, that's the way it used to be. Rolling Eyes

Completely agree with Ron, in that I cannot understand why people have to have music attached to their heads at all times . I would much rather hear birdsong or other open-air noises, and know when a car is approaching.
Strikes me as very dangerous not being able to hear what's going on.

Thank you Rach. Those orange flashes make them look pretty funky as well.

I'm not sure if I had the equivalent to a Walkman?? it was back in the 80s and it was just a small cassette player.. hardly bigger than the cassette itself.
I did walk the dogs along the cliff with it playing in my ears a few times (Prince mostly) but the fad didn't last long.

I mainly used it whilst decorating in the end and quite enjoyed the experience too.. I probably had it turned up too loud as I like "good" music that way ( I had my Den HiFi turned up full when "Whole Lotta Rosie" came on R2 the other evening Laughing )

A couple of years ago I bought a cheap MP3 player but got bored loading tracks on it.. then I found I quickly got fed up with hearing those tracks over and over even though they were, in theory, my favourites!

I can't get on with those ear plug things either.. I find they're really uncomfortable and like Ron, I found I kept pushing them right into the ear to get a reasonable sound quality. Thing improved with a decent lightweight pair of phones but even the wire annoyed me so that's it for the MP3.

The car is a different story.. I find I normally enjoy listening to my favourite music whilst driving and, at a decent volume - although I'm more aware that one can look a bit of a dipstick if the music is too loud.. particularly in a convertible Embarassed

But.. I've found when I'm in a great mood, especially whilst on holiday in the US, driving along with the top down, in the sunshine with Rock & Roll blasting out takes some beating... Cool Laughing Razz

I had one of those cassette walkmans and used to listen to it on the train going to footie in London. I still have it somewhere, haven't used it in years. My phone has an mp3 player but I can't get on with those ear bud things either and I do like to hear what's going on around me.

Yes Angie.. I still have mine after all these years too! covered in emulsion paint and with a partly broken lid but it still worked last time I checked Laughing
I must get rid of all this "stuff" I've had around me for years.. I've been slowly clearing out some storage rooms we have here and I reckon I have about 4 Radiograms (50s) - 5 Record players (60s) - 7 Music Centres! ( 70s - 80s) 10 old portable/mains radios (50s - 70s) and 3 Cine film projectors!! 8mm and 16mm sound!
I even have my first JVC Video Camera outfit from 1984.. Rolling Eyes

My iPhone has 16GB of storage, and I sync it everyday with a specially-compiled music playlist as well as podcasts and videos. It syncs automatically when I connect it to my Mac, so any changes that have been made to the playlist are automatically updated in the iPhone. I listen to podcasts and stuff when I'm on the train into and out of London or when in the car (via a wireless link to the FM radio).

When in the kitchen, I drop it into a Gear4 dock so that I can listen on speakers.

What I also like is that I can use an iPhone App called SHOUTcast which enables me to stream countless radio stations from around the world; Radio Caroline is the one most listened to, although I the app enables to stream all BBC stations as well.

I find that the Apple earbuds have improved a bit over previous ones, although they're a bit "toppy" for me, so I have others that I listen to when the need arises.

I would never use headphones when driving or - worse still - when cycling. That seems daft to me - especially given a recent story in which a cyclist was killed in London because he didn't hear a car approaching.

Look after it - they're accumulating in value now. I have a Sony B&W reel-to-reel video recorder (which I used in my work) from 1976 as well as a couple of early piano-key VHS and even Betamax machines in storage. Betamax machines in particular can now fetch £100 at auction.

Yes, it was the first of the smaller cameras with a lead to the recorder which hung over the shoulder on a strap.. unlike the older, massive "on the shoulder" type machines... it took the small video cassettes.. "C" series I think they were called.
The "kit" is complete with everything I bought for it back then - camera, recorder, cases, umpteen leads, directional microphone, spare battery, ( probably not much good now!) car charger and even a "cassette converter" which allowed the small cassettes to be played on the home video player.
I only recently disposed of our first Video player - a Ferguson Videostar 3V23 - the first of the "new" electronic video players ( with many little red lights! Laughing ) from Rumbelows.. I was very proud of that at the time.

I use my MP3 player in my sister's car on trips to see my elder sister, or on a coach on holiday.

I can never get the earphones to stay in either so I tend to use my MP3 player when driving as the car doesn't have a CD player. I have an adapter which allows me to plug the MP3 player into the cassette deck and I can stick it on random play.

This is a good thread raising some interesting issues.

I have an ipod which I listen to every day. I have a 1.45 hr commute into London every day-mix of overhead rail, tube and then walk.

I like listening to my music/reading newspaper or my book when commuting however Colin raises a really great point re folk listening to music while out and about walking /cycling.

In the past 2 years since I changed jobs which involves me in quite a long walk through the City of London every morning /every evening, I have seen so many accidents involving pedestrains with cyclists, motor cycles, buses, taxi's , cars etc purely because one of the parties is not aware of the other-I am sure it has a lot to do with either the pedestrain/or other party being distracted because they have their music on. I am now VERY wary about listening to my ipod whilst out and about waliking in London especially around busy junctions-it is simply so dangerous to do so imo after what I have seen in recent times.

By the way I have no problem with my earphones staying in my ears.

It doesn't help matters that some people don't seem to have a bloody clue how to use the volume control! Some mornings I get into the lift at work and someone will get in with their MP3 player at full volume.

And don't get me started on the morons on the bus who disturb all the other passengers with their racket and sleep through it themselves....
