Did any other Move fans notice that the original of Stop, Get A Hold Of Myself (I forget who recorded it) was on a couple of weeks ago?

I heard it and thought I knew it from somewhere - it's on the BBC Sessions CD.

I was lazing in bed enjoying the show Razz when an old favourite of mine came on to prolong my lay-in.. "You Know What I Mean" by the Vernons Girls.. I loved this one as a kid! I'd have been 10 at the time.
Trouble was, it was followed by "Little Honda" which I had to enjoy too..

I wonder where the name "Vernons Girls" came from??

Hi SF,

Slept in this morning so just missed that one, Ferry Cross The Mersey was where I came in!

If I remember correctly the Vernons girls come from Liverpool and all worked for Vernons football pools hence the name!

Will have to listen again to the show.

The Vernons Girls had that then fairly rare thing, a two-sided hit. Lover Please got into the Top 20 and then, quite a while afterwards, You Know What I Mean was a small hit in its own right. Yes, I enjoyed hearing it this morning, too. It brought back lots of happy memories of visiting Liverpool in the sixties.

Vernon's Pools.. yes of course! I'd forgot about them.. Rolling Eyes I didn't know they worked for the company though.
I also liked "Lover Please" and still do! I find it pretty amazing that after all these years, these relatively minor songs still appeal to me.

Of course, I had to Google "Vernons Girls" and soon ended up on YouTube watching dozens of related tracks including PJ Proby's first TV appearance introduced by Paul McCartney!

Listening to "Ferry Across the Mersey" always reminds me how as kids, we tried to imitate how Gerry says "turn" as in "we'll never turn you away" Laughing it fascinated us.. still can't do it..

You know it's often those minor songs that I like best as well. Wonder why that is? That 'turn' almost sounds like 'terrn' doesn't it!

I'll always remember my first ever visit to Liverpool about 25 years ago not long after we moved from the NE. The purpose of the visit was to find the John Lewis store, George Henry Lee, as we were having withdrawal symptoms as there was no Bainbridges (JL NCL), Ian will appreciate that!

Anyway we had instructions but took a wrong turn and ended up on PENNY LANE, well that was the icing on the cake as we had already passed Speke Airport where you used to see the Beatles on the TV making their return to Liverpool. Later we found the Cavern, which I don't think is the exact site but it was like being a teenager all over again as the names of places came to life.

H

PS Sorry for the long winded response. Sad

You're right. In an act of complete and utter stupidity, Liverpool City Council allowed the original Cevern Club in Mathew Street to be bulldozed back in the early 70s. The last time I was there in 1976 (staying with a college mate in the city just after I graduated) it was a boarded-up hole in the ground. It annoys me that tourists are now encouraged to think of today's "Cavern Club" as being the real thing. It isn't - it's a plastic copy, and not even in the same location!

My first visit to Liverpool was in 1966. My mum's sister lived in Chester and my uncle took us on a day-trip to Liverpool. My cousin played in a band at the time and he sidelined myself and my brother off to what we called "The Beatles Shop" which turned out to be shop called NEMS, owned by the Epstein family!

Absolutely brilliant to hear Yes's cover of the Beatles "Every Little Thing"
on this morning's show Very Happy - it certainly woke me up at just after 8.30. I hadn't heard it in ages. a real full-on 100mph version- stupendous.

Superb show today, as ever. A-Z of the Beatles must be nearing its end, now that You Won't See Me has been on. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away is still to come. Can anyone think of any others or might next week's instalment be the last?

Wonder what might replace it? They haven't done an American Top 20 for quite a while. Also, I've been wondering whether an occasional programme given over entirely or mainly to requests might clear some of the backlog of ones which will never otherwise be played.

As far as I'm concerned he can start from the begining again Smile ...I'm listening now to You Won't See Me ....love it!!

I've always loved You Can Never Stop Me Loving You ...nice voice, Kenny Lynch.

Was good, as was mentioned earlier, hearing "You Know What I Mean" by the Vernons Girls the other week .....I hadn't heard it for ages then heard it twice in quick succession on Radio 2 ...Paul O'Grady played it too.

I can't believe how long the repeated "A to Z of The Beatles" has been running - it must be at least three years, four maybe.

I did intend to record all of them to my computer and then compile them to a series of CDs. I got to about 26 then things slipped... so I gave up.

In production terms it was fantastic achievement at the time it was produced and played out originally, and I can't see anybody at R2 committing to such a venture these days (certainly not Bob Shennan - unless it has Chris Evans' voice on it).

"You Won't See Me" is indeed another great song by the Fab Four although as usual in my case, I didn't have a clue it was about Paul's girlfriend Jane Asher giving him a hard time! Rolling Eyes I normally hear the music way before the lyrics..
One thing stood out about this song which I noticed as a kid.. just before the last verse, somebody holds down a single note ( probably in the root chord of A I'd amagine.. ) which remains constant right through until the end of the track.. sounds like an organ note to me.

I reckon that A-Z of the Beatles has taken about 5 years.

I'd be happy to see it simply restart too but wonder if they would commit to a further 5 years.

OK, so I was wrong--it isn't yet the end of A-Z of the Beatles!

Missed a section from side 2 today, as I had to nip out. Gather my missing part included Dave Davies' Lincon County, so I'll definitely be on Listen Again a bit later.

Intrigued to hear Bill Kenwright as a recording artiste.

Nat King Cole's Lazy etc must be one of the best feelgood records that I know and I was heartily singing along with it. Astonishing that it never made the UK chart.

Oh I missed that Ian.

I was listening out, heard Cilla's Love Of The Loved which I think was a Lennon and McCartney composition (?), thought it must be soon if there were any Beatles tracks left, then the phone rang and it was Nat King Cole when I came back to it. Did Brian say if it was the last one?

I remember Lazy too, and was surprised it wasn't a hit.

Some good tracks this morning!

I liked Dave Davies's 'Lincoln County' too. Bill Kenwright's 'Tiggy' reminded me about an ex-boyfriend's cat of that name, as well as Mrs. Walker.

But I was irritated by Peter Paul & Mary's 'I Dig Rock & Roll Music' - they weren't half bitter at the acts of the time! In another era they'd have slated Donovan and the Mamas & Papas in Q magazine as George Harrison did when he beefed about 'Kylie Monologue'!

'English Country Garden' has the same 'patronise the British' feeling about it as Roger Miller's 'England Swings' and some of the lamer episodes of Family Guy! It also put me in mind of a commercial for company bathroom products with the chorus 'so you slip and you trip and bump your rump in an English company washroom'!

Faith Brown's 'Rock Me, Shock Me' (another Kenny Young composition)on a previous episode had me searching for the 'Faith Brown Chat Show' on Youtube for her Kate Bush impersonation!

'Three Little Fishes' as done in Kate's style circa Never For Ever was fairly accurate, but the 'interview' bit made her come across as a bit thick.

Thanks, all. It wasn't the last A-Z. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away hasn't been on yet and there could be others still to come that I haven't thought of.

Love of the Loved is a Lennon-McCartney song but the Beatles don't seem to have recorded it themselves.

I should imagine by the time Cilla had finished crucifying it, some of its allure might have diminished. Crying or Very sad Rolling Eyes

Ian

I'm sure I've heard a recording of Love Of The Loved by the Beatles but don't ask me where! It's been bugging me and I can sort of hear it in my mind.

There's two words I never thought I would hear in the same sentence. Cilla and allure Laughing

That was a truly awful rendition, and just as I was waking up, too

From Brian's comments it sounds as though they don't have any plans to re-run A-Z of the Beatles.

My two singalongs today were Steve and Eydie's I Want to Stay Here and the Crying Game by Dave Berry.

The Naturals' I Should Have Known Better is a good example of a track that I loved at the time but had never heard since, one of many reasons why I love this show so much.

Aida Pavleitch's book 'Sirens Of Song' refers to the same song. She adds that it was based on a popular game in schools called Pig Latin.

By the way, the Elvis Presley version of 'Love Letters' reminds me that John Lennon and Billy Preston took the same piano style to use on the song 'God' - as seen on the Classic Albums episode on 'John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band'.

Jess Conrad was truly asking for it by releasing a song called 'Why Am I Living'! I also remember its other side, 'This Pullover', being played on Tiswas!

I always remember Kenny Everett sending up Jess Conrad on his Capital Radio (London) show in the late 70s/early 80s. Every week he used to play another "best of Jess Conrad" songs - they were always dreadful! Smile

According to the song alcoholic fathers come home from the pub and whack their kids and mothers sent their children to bed with strawberry jam tarts in their hair. Strange place, Liverpool

I found a link to recordings of Kenny Everett's 'World's Worst Record Show', and he included the Vernons Girls 'You Know What I Mean'.

The Jess Conrad inclusions are atrocious! Steve Bent's I'm Going To Spain could be James Warren (Stackridge/Korgis) under a pseudonym.

Well I really liked it... mind you, I've also seen "Seventeen" (7teen) by The Regents on a world's worst list and I really liked that too!
as well as Dollar... and an occasional Buck's fizz...

Anyway, Embarassed I was pleased to hear Jimi Hendrix' "Let the Good Times Roll" a couple of shows back.. what I thought was great about this track back then was that you can clearly hear Jimi's Marshall amps buzzing away behind him.. just gave the track that rough edge..

Back in 1987 I recorded an interview with Jim Marshall for a video to commemorate the company's Silver Jubilee (Marshall Amps is based a couple of miles down the road from me) and I still have the original recordings. It's fascinating to hear him talk about his friendship with Jimi Hendrix and what they had to do to keep his amps in good order.

Hendrix had three full stage amp sets stored on each of three continents to make touring easier, and at regular intervals the whole lot would be flown back to the UK for a "full service"!

Quite smart to follow Liverpool Lullaby with the Cockney-inspired Lazy Sunday.

Strange that, when I was trying to work out when the A-Z of the Beatles was likely to end, I overlooked Your Mother Should Know, especially as it's one of my favourites.

My singalong this week was It Might As Well Rain Until September--great record.
