Reading the detail of the Trust report seems 6music is NOT saved for definite.

If the controllers can satisfactorily re-arrange the schedules of R1, R2 and 1extra, to provide a wider range of music for all the target audiences, then 6music could still be closed.

Yeah?

Given the high-profile campaign that has undoubtedly influenced this turnaround, any BBC DG and senior management team would be completely and utterly stupid (even more than it is at present - is that possible?) not to grant 6 Music a permanent reprieve. The BBC Trust's non-acceptance of the case for closing 6 Music is surely a shot across the BBC's bow in this respect - ie: fly in the face of public opinion at your peril.

I really thought it was a non starter from the beginning ColinB .....they seriously misjudged the station's appeal.

I just wonder if they are using it as an implement in the 'DAB persuasion' scheme? I can see my radio listening ending when that comes in as I won't buy a radio that doesn't work in the kitchen.....

We're in the same boat. Our kitchen is north-facing and although the nearest DAB transmitter is in the north east (Huntingdon, Cambs) the reception is bad on the main BBC channels, with dropout all the time. It's useless. Interestingly, my neighbour has just had a new rooftop Freeview aerial installed along with one to assist DAB reception, and he asked the rigger why DAB was so bad much of the time. He replied: "Because it's basically crap". Tell it like it is...... Smile

At the moment, DAB is simply not "fit for purpose" and, given that the system of compression they're rolling out is actually old and outdated technology anyhow, I find it amazing that today the government has announced that it's going to forge ahead with the existing"FM switch-off" plans to the point where a definite timetable is now going to be published.

I can only think that commercial expediency is the motive - at the expense of the technological suitability of the alternatives.

I've long suspected that the BBC has been playing a PR game with this whole 6 Music debacle - and now I'm convinced of it!
