So, the BBC - in its infinite wisdom - is now considering moving the whole of the BBC Breakfast TV production team to the BBC's over-priced and un-necessary Salford Quays (Manchester) broadcasting centre.

The question that has to be answered is: "Why?".

That means not just moving the primary and secondary presenters but the whole production team. And it's a big production team - all of whom are quite happy living and working where they are. Many have children and husbands/wives/partners. They'll have to be financially incentivised to make the move...... at our expense.

Has the BBC management gone completely and utterly mad? Or is this yet another nail in the coffin of BBC Television Centre?

Here's the story according to the BBC (in other words, not much of a story - more a BBC Press Release):

On North West News last night a reporter said about waiting for someone to come back from a holiday in a fortnight (didn't catch who that was) and a decision will be made then and the word is that the decision is likely to be in favour of the move...

I'm sure it will be. That seems the way that the BBC heirarchy works these days. It's such a shame that they don't talk through this kind of stuff with the people most directly affected first! (echoes of The One Show / Adrian Chiles / Chris Nobhead episode).

And here's the confirmation...much quicker than was said last night

Seems a bit strange to me, and as the article says how will they get the celebs to be on if they are in London? They don't all come to Manchester!

This was, after all, the main reason why the Richard & Judy morning ITV show was moved from Granada's Albert Dock, Liverpool, studio down to LWT's South Bank centre (as it was back in the good old days) in London.

No it wasn't. This Morning moved because Granada wanted a production base in London and Richard & Judy's kids were off to Uni there.

Frankly, I get a bit fed up with all the moaning from Southerners about the audacity of the BBC to actually want to broadcast from outside the capital. If it means fewer shows about London (eg Radio 4 are currently doing a whole season about the bloody place) then I'm all for it.

Granada didn't "want a production base in London" - the whole of the South Bank centre came with the merger with LWT.

All irrelevant. I don't care if the planned move is to Timbuktu. The point I was making was that the lock-stock-and-barrel move to Salford Quays is completely un-necessary - and a costly move at that!
