Pardon me if this has been mentioned before, but I have noticed that the questions have lately become more alligned to music of the 21st Century. Questions from an earlier era are very often contrived or not based on fact. Wednesday morning's question about Fats Domino's "hit" recording of "Red Sails in the Sunset" had me perplexed. I have various listing books and this particular recording is not listed. I know the song, but it never (to my limited knowledge) made the charts.
Is t here some doxy, straight out of college, compiling the questions ?
Confused

Methinks he's a bit too reliant on WikiPedia for his "facts".

I feel Popmaster has really gone downhill over the last couple of years.
There are way too many "What year did this record come out" questions, which anybody with a chart history book could compile.
It just seems really lazily put together nowdays

probably by a Media studies student, who hasn't heard of anything prior to 1990 Rolling Eyes

Only by the calibre of contestants that are on these days.

Ken: "What would be your predicted score?"
Contestant: "Mid to late teens although it's harder when you're on the radio"

You can get "mid to late teens" by answering at least two bonuses and one other so that's only 3 questions right out of 10. Not exactly a "pass mark" is it?

I always aim to get at least 30 points when I play at home and I never disappoint myself. I would phone in and have a go but I did it about 6 or 7 years ago and have my digital radio already (30 points and 3 in 10 from Boyzone) so I can't be bothered to enter again. Laughing

Felt sorry for the Lancastrian competitor yesterday morning who got a final score of 3 points after all but being told the answer to the last question.

But I think it has got harder.

I didn't feel sorry for him, Ian, I felt sorry for Ken!

They do filter contestants to an extent. When I went on last year, I was asked three questions by the researcher of which I answered two correctly; I admit to being surprised when I was then told that I was on the show.

The questions are more difficult these days, but it can still be luck of the draw, especially where bonuses are concerned.

Having done it twice ( I won both times but didn't get 3 in 10) I can only concur with the often-expressed opinion that it really is more difficult live.

I don't listen to Ken much these days (largely because the radio isn't on at 9.30am any more so Ken pays the price by default, poor thing) but when I do I'm usually in the car and shouting at those contestants who don't know what I consider to be the simplest of answers.

My wife has often said: "If you know so much why don't you go on it?". The truth is that I know that I'd be an abject failure if I were to take part because I'd get all the wrong questions!!! Smile

Heard someone earlier last week - got a good score and won. Was then asked to name 3 hits by Steps..............
He said "Who?".
As I have never heard a Steps record on Radio 2, I sympathise.

Yes, I would have asked the same question I think. In fact, I'd say it would be worth losing just to be able to ask: "Ken, who the hell is Steps?"

Oh, be fair - they had 14 Top 10 singles ten years ago. It's reasonable to assume someone of Radio 2's target age would have heard of them (as they have, indeed, been played on the station). It's not like they're an obscure modern band.

Similar happened to me. I was on Popmaster twice, won both times, but the 3 in 10 was Spice Girls and some other band I can't even remember.

I did know one Spice Girls hit but pride wouldn't let me admit it! Laughing

If I'm honest it wasn't pride, it was fear of the mickey-taking from my biker mates if I'd owned up to knowing a Spice girls hit! Embarassed

Don't worry - you're not alone. I saw Take That at Wembley last year.

That's it. I'm "out" now.

My excuse is that I offered to drive my wife, my daughter, my son's girlfriend and one of my wife's workmates there and then pick them up after the gig. My wife's friend had to drop out at short notice so muggins ended up with the paid-for ticket.

I do have to confess that it was actually a very, very impressive gig! Just don't quote me on that......Smile

There's no shame in admitting a liking for TT - they're an impressive band these days. Steps, however... Laughing
