I've heard of high-sided vehicles being barred from bridges and the A66 trans-Pennine dual carriageway but never a motorway closed due wind - were the gantries coming down, or what? _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Britain can't cope with the wrong kind of snow, rain and now wind. I would think haulage companys and their drivers would use common sense and pull over and dont send lorries onto motorways?
Sorry to read that John. |

The A66 over Stainmore sees wagons being blown over every year - there's literally no shelter at all.
Seems the wind has wrought misery and even some deaths today:

Winds were particulary gusty in S Leics., Rugby area which caused lorries to lose their loads or fly into the central reservations. It's very flat round there, not high ground, but high-sided lorries are exposed to gusts which were reaching 70mph. Apparently the M69 was littered with debris from something and as we drove back south on the near-deserted bit N or the M6 there were hundreds of lorries still blocked on the M69 all the way down to the M6 (~10 miles) (having been told they couldn't get off the M6 at Jn 1). At one point (as we sat on the M69) we heard the M1 and M6 which meet in the same area of Leics. were also both closed, or junctions were closed, and I think they might not re-open till the winds drop.
I should have phoned Sally with all that. Yes, we did catch a bit of SW (with Stallone) and Evans (with his drivel, what rubbish it all was tonight).
Why is it so many complain about Sarah's one showtune when Evans plays two!

I'm in West Sussex and didn't dare go out to-day.
When I got up this morning, went into the kitchen and had a completely new outlook to usual.
The fence between my garden and the pub had completely gone! Yikes.
Quickly back to the bedroom to fetch a more glamourous housecoat!
Pub landlord and mates were surveying the damage. What a pain!
Hope it's calmer tomorrow as I'm having my hair done!! |

That 'bit of wind' had me stuck on the A645/614 for over an hour when the M62 was closed from J35 to 37, also the M18 closed north AND south for 2 junctions. I managed to get through a village, and over the second ouse crossing, before getting back on to the M62 eastbound I got home at 7pm listening to Humberside to gauge the problems, local radio has its uses _________________ Geddon

Is it real worth going out unless you have to in such weather? I wouldn't personally as you risk getting hit by falling debris of various sorts. It just ain't worth it if you have the choice not to. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

It has been terrible today here in Lincolnshire, I was following a tractor towing a covered trailer. The trailer seemed stable and as he was only doing approx 10 mph, I decided to overtake. As I was about to overtake, the trailer was blown over onto the right had carriage and had the coupling not sheered would have taken the tractor over on its side as well, the tractor was lifted onto 2 wheels before the coupling sheered. I consider myself very lucky and believe the tractor driver was exceptionally lucky. Three miles down the road there was a tree down with police already there, looked as if the tree had come down on a car, could not determine if this was so as we were diverted down single track roads before we got close enough to see exactly what had happened. I decided that discretion was the better part than valour, so went home for the day. So to say a little wind shut the motor way network, is, IMHO, an understatement.

Not just motorways affected. I read that Manchester airport was closed for a few hours today.
Oh and our front wall got blown over as well! |

It was meant to be, but no offense intended, euphemism. Several people have lost their lives, don't know if on the M69.
On the radio people were saying why do these high-sided lorries still go out on days like this - there are probably 100,000s of them so probably nowhere for them to park! Sometimes driving late at night we do see a lot of lorries parked on roads leading to cinema complexes, sports complexes and business parks. I expect they have to pay a lot at the proper lorry parks.

John,
On the radio last night, R5 were talking to a trucker who had been trying to find a place to park for 3 hours. Also the services charge £17.50 for overnight parking _________________ Geddon

Couldn't he just have used the M1, M11, M6, M42, A1 etc etc like all the other motorists ? |

John they are probably like me, have no choice, a lot of management don't realise how dangerous our road network is on a normal day, never mind one like yesterday.
