The First Time with ...Yusef Islam

On 6 Music on Sundays at noon......

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00t3nsw

"Matt Everitt examines the early years of Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens."

One of the songs that was played was Here Comes My Baby written (didn't know that) and sung by him ...lovely it was too.....but I have always associated that one with The Tremeloes and don't ever remember hearing a version by Yusef Islam before....

This is the latest in a series about different musicians ....the other week there was a very good one with Johnny Marr.....some great musical choices on that one ! ...next week it's Richard Hawley.

I listened to this on the I-player. I remember my mum saying about the Mavericks' version of 'Here Comes My Baby' that she 'liked the song by that ASIAN band'!

Very entertaining interview yesterday with Richard Hawley ....what a nice ordinary bloke...interestingly he played music (love The Longpigs one) that had influenced him (not just his own) much like Johnny Marr the other week unlike Yusef Islam who just played his own music....

Richard Hawley - one of my favourites. He's got a thing about rivers - loves to sing about them.

Hawley's sense of humour comes through in his songs. I can't look at a National Express bus without thinking of his song.

And that reminds me of The Divine Comedy song ,too....Neil Hannon was on the radio this afternoon singing a little from his new album and also from The Duckworth Lewis one.....

Ooops. Of course - "National Express" is not Richard Hawley's at all but the Divine Comedy's song. Silly me!

I enjoyed the Richard Hawley one - I often wonder if he and Mark Hawley (Mr. Tori Amos) were related because of her song 'Northern Lad'.

I also liked James Dean Bradfield's episode - I was surprised when the Manics' first choice for the Rubytrax compilation was going to be the Bay City Rollers's Bye Bye Baby! That song now reminds me of my dad because he always set his train set off when the Number One was announced on Top of The Pops, and my sister was furious because it was that song!

Suicide Is Painless also reminds me of my brother, because he watched the series of MASH.
