From the Radio Times

Saturday 28 August
6:45pm - 8:30pm
BBC2
Rodgers and Hammerstein

Fans of the American musical should cancel all other engagements and settle down for tonight's celebration of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Starting in the 1940s, their partnership produced hit upon hit: South Pacific, Carousel, Oklahoma!, The Sound of Music, The King and I... They led the genre away from the froth of mawkish tragedy and vaudeville, introducing darker tones, emotional depth and involving drama - the golden age of musicals on Broadway and in Hollywood. Tonight should be another triumph for conductor/musicologist John Wilson. Last year, his MGM musicals Prom proved a storming success - especially with RT readers. Those long-lost scores had to be re-created by ear as a labour of love. Happily, full scores exist for the Hollywood movie versions of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals, but, says Wilson, "I've prepared new performing editions" for a talented, hand-picked orchestra. Wilson calls it "the gig of a lifetime", re-creating a "thrilling sound - the combined sound of a large studio orchestra and dance band - missing from the live experience for almost half a century". A starry line-up includes Sierra Boggess (currently in the Phantom sequel Love Never Dies), who has two songs from The Sound of Music. Julian Ovenden, familiar from July's Sondheim Prom, bags Oh! What a Beautiful Morning. The Maida Vale Singers should rise to the occasion for the horny marines' number There's Nothing like a Dame, while flame-haired belter Kim Criswell - terrific at the MGM Prom - will have a riot with I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair. She closes the show with Climb Ev'ry Mountain. Sing along now!

I've recorded it to watch another time and also from Radio 3, before I realised it was on tonight.

Was out at a (superb) local amdram production last night but have recorded this for future enjoyment. The John Wilson event at the 2009 Proms was absolutely brilliant.
