I got Camel's 'Breathless' thanks to my sister sorting out what to do with my Amazon voucher (thanks again to my elder niece and family).
Thanks to Stuart Maconie I am enjoying Richard Sinclair's work for Caravan, Camel and Hatfield and The North. The man should get a New Year's Honour for services to record shops and online record websites!
And Gideon Coe is in need of a similar honour. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Additional to Camel report - I don't like Andy Latimer's moustache on the band photo in the booklet as it makes him look like a failed member of the California Highway Patrol (as in Jim Carrey's role as Charlie/Hank in 'Me, Myself & Irene')! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

I've just bought "The Yes Album" by Yes (1970) after playing it loads on Spotify and interrupted by ads. I got it cheap for £7.00 (approx) on Play.com, post included.
This was always one of my favourite albums from the early 70s and the original vinyl (although they were called LPs in the olden days) is in a box somewhere.
The digitally-remastered CD sounds fab, especially when the wick is turned up. |

You're a man after me own heart, SFF! "Yours Is No Disgrace" is a fabulous piece of 70s prog. I've been too embarrassed to listen to it for 30 odd years but now I think "What the heck!" (I'm prone to expletives like that when I get excited).
It was playing at full tilt on the car stereo when I picked up the missus from work the other day - she got into the car and exclaimed "What the hell is that racket?".
Must be good, eh? |

I remember hearing that some years ago on 6 music. In the days before Stuart Maconie had his Sunday evening Freak Zone show. In those days he had a Sunday morning show and the last track was a long track (I think the spot was called something like 'The Big Finish, or perhaps it was 'The Long Goodbye') Well anyway, on that occasion the track was 'Yours Is No Disgrace' by Yes. Not too long afterwards I discovered The Ultimate Yes - 35th Anniversary Collection in the supermarket. A look at the track listing saw 'Yours Is No Disgrace' among the tracks (track 1 on CD1 in fact) so bought it! Plenty of other prog tracks on it as well from the time before they went commercial with 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart' (which is also on there!) _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

There's only two Yes albums I really like: "The Yes Album" and "Close To The Edge". The latter is the first album on which Rick Wakeman appeared as keyboard maestro. I bought that from Play.com at the same time as the Yes Album.
I never really liked anything by Yes after that.
Rick Wakeman said on Planet Rock a couple of Saturdays ago (he's a part-owner of the station and does a show with David Jenson at the same time as JR is on R2) that Close To The Edge is his favourite Yes album as well.
I'm now listening to "Aja" by Steely Dan on iTunes as I work. (Well, I'm not working right now because I'm typing this, but you know what I mean).
As Ken Bruce would say: "Working at home? Yeah, right!" |

I've just ordered (from the USA) "Imaginary Voyage" by Jean-Luc Ponty. A fabulously talented "rock violinist" whose virtuoso ckills John Peel championed for a while in the early 70s. This amazing album is hard to get in digital form but my LP is now worn out and sounds 'orrible! |

As subtle as a brick, I know, but I like and have bought the new album "Trans-Continental Hustle" by Gogol Bordello.
Strangely, their record company Sony has not put anything up on youtube, and stamps upon anything unofficial, but here's one track they played on Later.... (it wakes up after 35 seconds)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OauoL-z3K5E
They're a mix of punk, Eastern European, Jewish, New York, and Latin American styles. The website plays three tracks in full - http://www.gogolbordello.com/ _________________ Ron |

Personally I think that Yes' Fragile is every bit as good as The Yes Album and Close To the Edge, Roundabout and Heart of the Sunrise are just sublime.
I saw them touring late last year, sadly without Jon anderson or Rick wakeman but Steve Howe is still a genius. _________________ The wheel keeps on turning...

I bought Radihead's greatest hits,i have 3 of their albums already but don't like most of the stuff.
The "hits" cd has the songs i like and has also made me realise that the best of or greatest hits of a band is a good idea although most if the time it's just so the record co can make more money.

What a coincidence. I've just been listening to The Strawbs' "From the Wychwood" album, which I originally bought on LP when it came out but I now have it on iTunes. Dave Cousins at his best on vocals. |

Echo & the Bunnymen Original Album series, that's 5 Cds for £10
Looks like there are a few more artists in this series, try putting "Original Album series" in the search at hmv. com or similar. |

HMV high street shops are having quite a substantial clearout of music CDs, in addition to the running 2 for £10 section. For £2 or £3 you can pick up the latest titles from the likes of Sting, Paul Weller, Nell Brydon and that Gogol Bordello album I mentioned a couple of months ago; also Susan Boyle (no surprise there) and a lot of X-Factor/BGT artists, Paul McCartney, Kaiser Chiefs, Take That, Gorillaz etc etc _________________ Ron |

Bought a few in the HMV sale
AC/DC - Iron Man 2 (OST) with 50 minute DVD, poster, sticker sheet and Comic Book reprint. Was £35.99 Now £10
Meat Loaf - Hang Cool Teddy Bear with bonus live album Was £25.99 Now £7
Elvis - The Collection Box Set with 7 albums Was £20 Now £10
Michael Jackson - This Is It 2CD with 4 bonus tracks Was £12.99 Now £3
And our local branch had some of the Beatles remastered albums at £5 each. I got Revolver, Sgt Pepper and Help! (they also had Abbey Road but I had that already).
And some branches have the stereo & mono Beatles box sets reduced to £100 each... |

One of the main reasons why there are so many cut-price CDs in retail at the moment is that CDs are very quickly dying as a music distribution medium. How many young people under the age of - say - 23 - actually buy CDs any more? They mostly download now. |

Sad news really as the quality of mp3's are great, and how long are they going to buy albums rather than just the tracks / singles they like ? |

True. That said, my wife and I (we're almost the same age and in our 50s) put together our iTunes playlists in completely different ways. I fill my iPod/iPhone with albums and a few single tracks, whereas she only cherry-picks single tracks and "singles". She's not an albums person and sees them merely as a collection of individual tracks.
With that in mind her online music-buying habits are completely different to mine.
For that reason, I've never really liked those "Best of" collections because they invariably include only the commercially successful tracks rather than the ones I really like. A good example is Rod Stewart (who my wife has adored all her adult life); a Rod Stewart "Greatest Hits" album will contain all the stuff you'd expect it to contain, whereas in the opinion of my wife and I the best stuff he has done is the stuff that doesn't necessarily get played on radio.
It's the same with Eric Clapton (who I have always respected). Ask a radio DJ to play a track from "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" and he/she'll play the title track. But what about the sublime "Bell Bottom Blues", which I think is much better? (Being from Devonport I identify with it closely).
So, I can identify with those who only want to download individual tracks rather than a whole album's worth - who wants the duff tracks that often exist on albums? |

Yeah, I've just bought The Promise as well. I'd be interested to hear what others think. At the moment I'm a little disappointed but I think my expectations were pretty high.
Also Bellowheads Hedonism - saw them live at Bristol and they were fantastic. Now, they did live up to my expectations. It's amazing the difference it makes when it's clear that the band is having fun as well. They remind me of a low key 'english' Gogol Bordello - equally hard to define.
Finally, Alexander Wolfe, 'Morning Brings a Flood'. Reminds me of Jeff Buckley, with doses of Neil Young and Nick Drake. I really need someone to give me some perspective here and tell me if I'm barking mad with bigging this guy up or whether he is a bit special. (I'll fight you if you think I'm mad though ). _________________ "There are more of us now......that makes us right" |

Is this the album of tracks they found behind the cupboard or somewhere after many years ?. Do they come from the Born to Run era (which was his best in my view) ? |

I have just bought Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Anthology through the years. I am so glad I got it, I hardly know any of the tracks but there is not a single duff one it. Bought this on the strength of watching the TV programme about the making of Damn the Torpedoes and realised how much I liked their sound! _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I don't know much about Tom Petty but do have a Greatest Hits CD. Some of it is a bit cheesy (I Won't Back Down) but I do love Refugee and of course Stop Dragging My Heart Around with the excellent Stevie Nicks.
Best song is Mary Jane's Last Dance. |

That is one of my favourite albums Angela. I got my copy shortly after it was R2 'Album Of The week' several years ago now and it has been well played ever since. Whilst I may have been guilty of playing the more well known tracks on it to start with, I have been glad to discover tracks like 'Mary Jane's Last Dance' which I hadn't previously heard on the radio. In my opinion, Tom Petty deserves more recognition than just his Jeff Lynn produced Full Moon Fever era, good as that was. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Hasse Froberg & Musical Companion - Future Past. This is the album by the rhythm guitarist and other singer in the Flower Kings and shows how much I missed his input when Roine Stolt was in Transatlantic!
Big Big Train - Far Skies, Deep Time. ARFM's Rock On show has featured the band's cover of Anthony Phillips's 'Master Of Time' a lot and this inspired me to order this EP. It didn't hurt its chances by having Nick D'Virgilio of Spock's Beard on drums. And Amazon had a link to the band's website where I ordered it from. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!
