Anything other that having Alex until 7 is going to be second or third best. What time Alex starts is up for debate though, 3 or 4.. – 4 would keep the show as it is now. However: Alex can do non-watershed radio as good as anyone else (better than most)… “Alex-lite”..he could still do all the crazy mad stuff before 6. It would be like, ok it’s 6: 04, now we have to put our sensible hat on.
How do I look?
Ridiculous!
Brilliant- that’s the look we were going for!

Zoe Ball: Nah- not good enough- she would be a disaster in the early mornings- if she gets the gig I’m going canoeing and not coming back.

Lynn Parsons: Hmmm- deffo good enough-like her a lot, wouldn’t be overjoyed that it’s not Alex though but could live with Lynn.

Richard Allinson: he’s out of favour at the moment- he’s too …. um … well… just too Richard Allinson- everyone’s already had enough of him- he’s like a shell suit, when you think back , you smile and say, ah yeah I remember those but you don’t think, where can rush out to get one.

Chris Evans- Nah- overexposed, overstretched, overrated, peaked too early, already on the downswing and on his way out of Radio 2- he just hasn’t realised that yet- everyone else has though: there’s the door sweetheart- it doesn’t say exit just for the fun of it.

More like he did the breakfast show too well and got his card marked for it!

Rubbish Chris an't going anywhere. Why not scrap Dawn Patrol in favour to continue Alex Lester until what ever time. People will moan when the wrong name is announced.

At least you've got something right, Mark. Chris Evans is going nowhere in the long term. His "has-been" status is imminent due to his dated - and tiresome - style of presentation.

Mark, If Rachel says he's on his way out, he's on his way out: Like this: http://www.pictogame.com/en/play/game/qFAbqyEGmnZs_my-kick-boy

Rachel says he's on his way out so we all jump to that, and beleive her. Dont make me laugh. Chris is not as has-been. One thing he's very popular with the listeners. Live with it, he's on Breakfast at radio 2 for the long haul.

Sorry, but that's one thing I cannot do, as long as he's there, I'll be somewhere else. And yes, that includes Friday evenings on BBC1 too! I'll remain an Evans refusenik.

Rubbish! He certainly is a has-been - you only have to listen to (er... sorry...."endure") his pathetically retro 1980s presentation style to realise that.

If he's popular with listeners, then he's even more popular with the BBC top brass for reasons that may one day become apparent to one and all. As for being in for the long haul, we'll wait and see. I don't think we'll be waiting long.......

Not trying to make you laugh, Mark,- just telling it, as I see it. Sometimes I'm right, now and and again, I make the wrong call but that's the rub with the future- you can never be 100% certain.

Anyway this thread is about Sarah Kennedy leaving and who will take the slot- as I said earlier, it won't be Chris Evans.

Agreed. I, for one, would certainly welcome Alex Lester in the slot. I was really impressed when he recently had to do a double-shift on the occasion (or was it two?) when Sarah K. didn't turn up for work. He just got on with it and did a really good job.

He's another of those presenters who has an amiable, self-depracating, wit - though sadly that's a quality that's in short supply on R2 these days.

I wonder if the Controller will recognise this and make a sensible decision for a change?

I don't understand how some people can enjoy the tired old formats of Chris Evans and Steve Wright day in and day out. Listening to their shows is like Groundhog Day.

I'm guessing the technical theory behind it is the same as why "The Sun" is Britain's most popular paper, yet such offensive embarassing drivel!

I was hardly a fan of Sarah's show, but the show certainly had something going for it, including a very loyal following. The show was different to much of the bland output that now presides over R2 daytime and that is certainly something I doubt will be apparent in its replacement.

It's inevitable Zoe Ball will be on daytime 2 in the next year or two, whether she takes this gig in the interim, or waits until Ken Bruce 'retires'... Sad

I was awake and up early enough this morning to listen to the last 45 mins of Lynn Parsons. She seems to have settled in to the spot quite well now and, apart from the Show Tune (which she patently knew nothing about - Sarah would have told us which recording it was and which artists were singing), she has moved it away from the Kennedy/Tarbuck style, but not too far.

Another consideration in who they pick for the slot may be the feeling expressed in some quarters that there were not enough female presenters. Having lost one I think they might prefer the replacement to be a girl, and provide a contrast or buffer zone between the blokey Alex and Chris. If she hasn't been tied down long-term to Smooth, Lynn might be in the right place at the right time - just needs cover from October 1 to January 1

Janice Long would do the show justice failing that Alex would be good

I'am a little worried if it was to be Liza Tarbuck. Lynn would be a good choice.

Lynn's smart enough to know that you don't burn your bridges with employers. I am sure Smooth will know that R2 are interested in Lynn, so she's in a good position.

I doubt Lynn or any presenter doing freelancing would tell another station they work for to "stick it" could themselves become "unstuck" rather quickly.

They've obviously been reading your updates, Mark, so I'll put money on it that they know.

Iain Smith on another board has been reckoning Ken Bruce is going to replace Kennedy (with Tarbuck taking over from Bruce). I hope not, but anyone else heard this?

Ken Bruce- hmmmmm, interesting. Love Liza Tarbuck- she isn't a morning girl though, so early breakfast is out for her, but popping Ken in there and Liza in the Brunch Show would work... yeah I'd sanction that, if it really is impossible to have Alex on EB. Yeah interesting.

Yes, and I do believe if Ken didn't want a slot there are loads of stations that would snap him up if he just left.

I just read this for the first time:

Dermot gets in bother for implying Sarah like a drink:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1289722/Dermot-OLeary-forced-climbdown-BBC-bosses-Sarah-Kennedy-jibe.html

At least he didn't force her to leave the station... ahem.

As many of you will be aware, I was never one of Sarah's greatest fans, although since Chris Evans' arrival I've mellowed a bit, having realised that presentation-wised I'd actually prefer Sarah's show to his.

I have to say that for all her faults I think the old trout's been treated very shabbily indeed, and I do hope that she comes out with a no-holds-barred account of the whole shambles very soon.

I'll go along with Alex 4 till 7 BTW; might even tempt me to go into work earlier if he's on! If the Babbling Ball gets the gig that'll be me finished with R2 for good.

When Ken 'retires', assuming he stays that long, that will be the end of R2 daytime for me, its just dull and annyoing these days.

Anyone know if they are to get a good replcament for SK ?, instead of the current texting monotony, with questions like 'your favourite smell' or 'who would you like to see dressed as a pearly king/queen' every morning ? Rolling Eyes

Thirded!

A very good friend of mine regularly sets off on long car journeys for work around the time when Sarah was on. I was quite astonished to hear how much she enjoyed her show as I couldn't imagine her liking it at all. She said it's just right for that time of day and of course she wasn't PC in her approach.

She'll be missed, as we've said before. Poor show in the way she's gone though.

yes a strange 'retirement' with no period between announcement and leaving, you'd have thought she would want to say her farewells.

While Sarah could drive me mad some mornings, I have listened to her on the way to work for the past 12 years and it hasn't been the same since she lost her 7.30 finish. I have to turn the radio off as I can't abide that uch noise in the mornigns - and driving the Western Bypass is hazardous enough without the stupid distractions.

I don't miss the breakfast show at all now, as I tune into 6Music where they all appreciate music. There is no playlist - and while not all of the music is to my liking...well, that's no different to the rubbish that R2 has on these days. At least I don't get exposed to X factor or boy/girl bands all day.

I hope Sarah does write an autobiography - it would make interesting reading - and, if the politicians can all say what they want when they leave office, why should there be a gagging order on her?

Oh, and Lynn Parsons is boring in the mornings - and the music is nowhere near as good.

Make of this what you may but Chris Evans this morning slyly announced that Vanessa Feltz was soon to join Radio 2. Who knows what she's coming for, but it did make me think - if they're looking to replace SK with a similar broadcaster, Feltz may be a good choice. I've heard her show on BBC London a couple of times - she's an interesting broadcaster these days. Of course, she could just be coming to do a documentary.

Oh Nick I hope not as I can't stand the woman. I don't really like female broadcasters in general.

The music on Lynn Parsons has gone down a bit as well.

I don't like her either. Her show on BBC London is OK in that it's primarily a phone-in and she handles that well enough, but I sincerely hope she's not earmarked for the DP slot.

Helen May wrote:

I agree. I also think that she's sounding a bit too enthusiastic, which I don't really need at that time in the morning.

You know what they say - you don't appreciate what you've got until it's gone. SK had it just about right in terms in tone, style and pace - even if she did come across as a dippy aunt sometimes!
