I have to ask this. Are the presenters under orders to mention Chris berluddy Evans at least once in their show? I heard Janice Long do it last night, Lynn Parsons does it & Ken Bruce this morning. For the weakest of excuses. If they are, then why? It certainly won't make me listen or watch him. I'm heartily sick to death of hearing his name and seeing his face everywhere. Instead it'll just harden my resolve to avoid him at all costs. I'm sorry if this makes his supporters flounce off, but this is something I feel I have to say.
For heavens sake. Give us a rest from him

Funny I thought the same thing, while listening to my recording of Lynn Parsons this morning! Must have 'tuned out' when Ken mentioned him thankfully!

I'm afraid it's compulsory for all broadcasting staff to do so on the soon-to-be-renamed "Evans Broadcasting Corporation".

Will Emu sue Chris Evans then? Laughing Wasn't EBC a series Rod Hull & Emu were in?

And shouldn't Evans have played It Bites's 'The Big Lad In The (Pink) Windmill' by now?

Hi to everybody

I had to share this email I received today from the R2 Electric Proms Ticket Alert peeps. I've signed up with them to get advance notice of the forthcoming Neil Diamond show (cut and paste I'm afraid).

Nice Header saying

"Neil Diamond to play BBC Radio 2 Electric Proms"

[Smiling piccy of Chris Evans] Unfortunately can't copy over Crying or Very sad

A message from Chris Evans.....

This morning I announced Neil Diamond as the third superstar playing our Electric Proms event.

A man woven into the very fabric of rock and roll, how about that! How hot is that ticket going to be!

There's three simply magnificent Radio 2 Electric Proms this year - Elton John, Robert Plant and Neil Diamond. I am in one of my "I can't believe I get to do this for a living" moods.

Listen to me on Radio 2 next week to hear how to get tickets or sign up to the Radio 2 Events email update.

CLP x "

What is this all about, I only want to be alerted to tickets being on sale Shocked Talk about self-promotion Twisted Evil

I honestly think they are gonna shoot themselves in the foot with all the Chris Evans promotion.

People are going to be absolutely sick of the sight and sound of the bloke .. and before everyone responds with 'we are already' you know what I mean.

I think back to Carol Vorderman who at one point was on everything, Wossie ... there's a whole catalogue of them - they are all over everything and then it all implodes.

Rachel that's a horrible picture, Laughing

What I cannot understand is why does he have to promote tickets for what will obviously be an oversubscribed couple of shows, Elton John, Robert Plant and Neil Diamond, they will sell out in seconds Evil or Very Mad why is he trying to ride on the coat-tails of extemely popular artists, the worst scenario is that he might be in attendance Shocked

Even worse Shocked he is following me, driving home from the office late just now listening to Jo Whiley with Radiohead at 8.40pm guess what Jo says, "great show on sunday Chris and Elvis .. wonderul... fantastic... great ....show now here's Chris to talk about his favorite track from Sunday... Chris, me ..me..me. me... me Michael Ball ..."

The Beeb are really sounding desperate.......

Is it possible the promotion of Evans' show s to try to tempt back the listeners who are abandoning him?

I don't doubt he has a loyal following and suspect the vast majority of listeners will listen to the show irrespective of who the presenter is, but digital listening figures must be available to them and give a far more accurate and representative measure of his ongoing popularity.

Just a thought on a slightly chilly Friday morning.

It could be the BBC is just as badly run as it appears to be Colin. I merely offered the thought of diminishing returns from the investment in Evans as a possibility because the use of RAJAR figures and the ensuing debate all became a bit silly. It was another instance of the board's host showing no interest in an objective discussion and that is based upon the personal interjections.

I don't buy the suggestion Peta was merely acting on instructions, as you can see the argumentative and unpleasant nature even in the closing thread. The hosting of the Points of View board has always been markedly superior.

I just cannot understand why in the case of the "electric proms" with such a line up of stars that they feel the need to add an extra incentive to advertise, such as an endorsement by Chris Evans. Trailers for shows like the Elvis one on Sunday, others like those on Jo Wiley's show all these do have a cost for production and in someone's time? Website promos, sporting challenge, one show promo's. He is popular, we all know that but on the other hand with budget cuts it does seem a waste of resources. I'm still miffed - if you can't already tell Laughing

I don't think he is popular though. I honestly don't. I think the BBC just think he is and if they keep telling us he is and putting his mug on everything we'll eventually get the message.

You read any messageboard or forum anywhere - even ones like Mumsnet of which I'm a member. They had a 'celebrities you can't stand thread' on there a while ago and his name popped up loads of times. You hardly ever read a post from someone who likes him, who would go out of their way to watch a programme he's on specifcally because he's on it, or listen to him on the radio specifically because it's him. Read the comments about the One Show on the POV board and DS. Hardly any are positive. Of course some people like him - he's not universally despised, but 'popular' - I honestly don't think so.

It was proved when they pulled the JR Chat show when he was suspended. They stuck Live from the Apollo on instead and it got nigh on as many viewers. Their golden boy wasn't as golden and popular as they thought he was and look what happened to him.

As for the Radio show - there are a huge amount of people who have the radio on in the mornings regardless. It could be anyone on there and it will still be on. Providing it's someone who doesn't drive you nuts, then people will listen and I just think that a lot of people don't mind Chris Evans - it's not that they are devoted fans as the BBC would have us believe.

As for the 'listening figures' that are always spouted. I simply don't believe them. Rajars are the most random way of obtaining listening figures - they just ask a few hundred and multiply it up. It could be absolutely miles out. It's not like TV when they can give exact figures, surges, know when people swtich over etc.

Chris Evans gets a few million, so does Ken, Jeremy Vine, Steve Wright, Simon Mayo ... and then it tails off in the evening as people switch to telly. I simply don't believe people wake up all excited ... 'ooh I must switch my radio on to listen to the fantastic broadcaster that is Chris Evans'. If Richard Allinson or someone else had got the gig they would be pulling in a few million listeners as well - all the daytime lot do - even Sarah Kennedy was pulling in a few million!

That's my two bob's worth. I don't think he's anywhere near as popular as they think he is. I don't know anyone who could be described as a fan - most of the people I know can't stand him (me included) a few don't mind him but that's it. He's just a bloke who shouts a lot in a Timmy Mallett kinda way not some genius broadcaster like the BBC make him out to be.

Your first line sums it up Soulsis. The BBC are a bit like MPs (sorry to mention politics) who live in a bubble and haven't a clue what is going on in the real world.

I can't see how (why?) he's so popular either. I know several people who have listened to R2 regularly over the years, and I don't know a single person who listens to him voluntarily - not one. I know several people (myself and my wife included) who have watched The One Show regularly, but I don't now know a single person who intentionally watches the Friday edition of the show either.

I can't for the life of me fathom it all out. To say the BBC is pushing hard to get him accepted is an understatement - but why are they bothering? In my opinion the guy is a complete.................... (self-censored word).

Certainly where managers and admin departments are concerned. However, many of those working in technical and production areas are now freelance - and they're treated with contempt in some cases. There's a huge resentment among freelances in both radio and TV at the huge salaries being paid to managers (not to mention some performers) when their own rates are being cut back again and again and again.

I know a freelance BBC-trained lighting cameraman who has worked for the Beeb for many years who now won't work for them unless they agree a decent rate for him and his expensive equipment, and the same goes for video sound recordists who - if they're needed at all - are treated like dirt.

Like I say - stuff 'em!!!!!!

That's my experience too Col - it honestly is. No-one I know personally likes him. Even my teenage kids can't stand him - before I'd said a word they made me switch off Drivetime, but they'd happily listen to Johnnie Walker and any other radio 2 show I happen to have on. No one offends their eardrums enough to tell me to switch it off - but Chris Evans managed it in half an hour.

I've got one friend who prefers him to Wogan (her hubby is the other way round) but she'd have the radio on whoever was on it while they get ready for work. It could be Brian Blessed presenting the breakfast show and she'd still have it on - and so would millions of others I don't doubt. The BBC for whatever reason build up these characters - they've done it time and time again and the more people moan and complain the more they do it. It won't last forever ... nothing does.

I have to agree, the vast majority of people I know, of a similar age, have stopped listening the the Breakfast Show, but I also know some younger people who have started listening to Radio 2 because of CE.

It has always been my main gripe that Radio 2 is attracting new listeners at the expense of their existing listenership. I have been part of the audience that made Radio 2 "the most listened to station", and as a reward I get CE in the mornings - no thank you.

The irony is that Evans is in his mid-forties. If I suggested to my 26-year-old son that he perhaps consider tuning to Evans on Radio Two in the mornings he would seriously question whether or not I was winding him up.

I have 2 sons aged 17 and 14 and both dislike Chris Evans intensely both on Radio and TV
They tell me all their friends at school feel exactly the same way
They jokingly say to me we can get our dose of bad presentation on Radio 1 with more modern music so why would we want to listen to Mr Evans
From this I deduce he is not really that popular with young people who probably view him as the equivalent of mutton dressed as lamb
He is not popular with many of my generation so exactly who are these masses the BBC claims his show appeals to
I can only imagine they are those types who feel its hip the jump on the current populist bandwagon whatever that may be at the time
Until of course the next one comes along!!
Then it all goes pear shaped

I actually found someone that enjoys the CE show yesterday so I decided to ask what they thought was good about it. After enquiring about which various features he enjoyed it turns out he likes the 'how do you like your eggs jingle' as he then spent the next 10mins walking rounding saying 'with a kissssssa'. So there you have it, the reason the only Evans fan I have found listens to the show.
