I once got modded for suggesting All About Eve's Farewell Mr. Sorrow for an All-Request Friday show hosted by Evans!

Shocked I just posted a link to this board to help somebody find us and it was removed in less than two minutes!
What could possibly be the reason for that?

The large proportion of anti-Evans posters, perhaps? After all, the mods on the BBC MBs are all part of the BBC's PR machine.

Laughing and my follow up post to say "blimey that was quick" was removed in less than one minute... pathetic.

Which just proves that they could have limited "a certain person's" rude, arrogant and blatantly provocative posts if they really wanted to.

Just looking at the rules, it seems they can "fail a message" if it "advertises a product, service or website" so fair enough I suppose but you'd think given the circumstances... Confused

I'm sure that 'the word' about this decent place will get out to those who are missing it due to the BBC's blatant censorship.

What I find truly reprehensible about the BBC's Radio 2 messageboard is the dictatorial manner in which it was run (except where SN was concerned, seems that he is the 'favoured son' - either that or the BBC fear him). The following post was made by poster 'dalmatina' at 10pm today but has, of course, now been removed (had a feeling that would happen so I saved the page on my PC first Smile ):

"No great surprise that the Radio 2 Boards will be closed.

New threads of late have been repetitive and provocative, and indulged by the moderator(s) to the point where some posters (myself included) have wondered about the preferential treatment afforded to one poster in particular.

Criticisms of some presenters have been allowed almost to the point of legal intervention, whereas some relatively minor remarks in respect of others have been immediately removed. I cannot be the only person believing that there is preferential treatment afforded to one or two posters (not to mention presenters) - and that has probably contributed to the demise of these boards.

This opinion will no doubt be removed within minutes, but it's how I feel, and I cannot be alone.

I won't miss these boards much, because having become disillusioned, I have rarely visited recently.

Those who were consistently and unfairly moderated will no doubt feel much the same."

(was message 86 in this thread: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio2/F14126215?thread=7756584&skip=80&show=20 )

Says it all really. Nicely worded too. Hope dalmatina doesn't mind me posting it here, but it's so good that it's worth re-posting in a better place. Smile

Yes, thanks for posting that. It's important to keep it in the public domain in the light of the utterly appalling standards of moderation exercised at the BBC.

On the assumption that at least one BBC MB moderator will have been taking a peek at this board, I'd like to express my personal opinion that you're a bunch of creeps.

I find the whole Radio 2 messageboard to be a rather 'creepy' place - there's something decidedly 'Big Brother' about it and it stoops to a level that I NEVER thought I would see the BBC allowing.

It really does go to show how extremely low the BBC have fallen.

On a much wider scale, the 'conspiracy theorist' within me does wonder if all of this is deliberate or 'being allowed' by people who want to see the BBC taken apart and distributed to the four winds. Atfer all, Murdoch is no fan and before the election this year there were major rumblings that the Tories had plans to pull the BBC to pieces. Maybe the general 'fall' of the BBC is part of this plan?

I have no idea. Just theories and gut feelings based on reading many articles and many messages on the subject in various places on the Internet.

The BBC can try and silence their critics by closing down their messageboards (or simply modding them badly), but they can't stop people from posting their feelings here and elsewhere. At least, not yet.

Thankfully, the nature of the internet - by design - means that it's virtually impossible to silence or stifle any one school of thought. The BBC can muzzle critics on its own turf but there's no way it can do it beyond those stone walls.

There is a whole world outside of the Radio 2 message boards of which I wasn't aware and reading the threads on here ....the blinkers are coming off! Although I mainly stuck to the music part of the board, I did occasionally venture onto the News and Views part, particularly in the last few months when the music board was incredibly quiet.

It never ceased to amaze me how Scott Nelson could get away with some of the stuff he posted, nor how biased the moderation was on that part of the board. Post after post (particularly those critical of Chris Evans or indeed of Scott Nelson) would disappear, whilst he could slag off anyone he liked in the most offensive way and get away with it, even to the point that the host would sometimes defend his posts while being incredibly scathing and dismissive towards others.

Barty's post absolutely sums up what I have thought myself on many occasions on there, but because my interest was always the music side of things, I tended not to get involved.

Maybe it's a good thing the moderator/host controlled boards are closing because it is only from the viewpoint of other forums like this, where free speech is allowed that the BBC, Radio 2 and they way in which they operate ... can be openly discussed.

I put this on the welcome page, but perhaps it should be here. This is r2ok's latest mench over there. I wonder how long it will last: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio2/F14126215?thread=7756584&skip=80&show=20
A thought has just struck me. I wonder if the 6 music boards will survive. Peta hosts those ones too.

That was my thought as well when I saw that the board was closing. The BBC have not only washed their hands of the responsibility of hosting and moderating the Radio 2 messageboards, but have also, as a side effect, given others the incentive to not only be more critical of them, but to be critical of them in places where they have zero control.

Own goal to the BBC I think. Smile

The best way to promote free speech is to ensure that these independent web forums continue to exist and that they maintain a critical, campaigning, stance.

I'll put money on it that all messageboards are ditched - along with the moderating teams that manage them.

Freakzone etc. are staying open but tbh they are basically fan forums. You don't get much dissent on there. Inside 6 however, is a goner.

I remember years ago, Radio 2 had similar fan forums. Does anyone else remember message boards for Johnnie Walker (in his Drivetime days) Terry Wogan, Critical List (Stuart Maconie)? I think there were one or two more. This was in addition to the generic Shows & Music board. Couldn't it be argued that the Folk music board is a forum for fans of that type of music? I can't imagine much bad feeling going on there. I've a feeling there was once a board for Blues music or perhaps it was for Country & Western.

There was a Drivetime, JV Show and a Country and Western message board when I joined, as well as Terry Wogan and the Coffee Bar.

All I can say is that it serves them right. They knew there was a problem, that there was something rotten there, but they failed to deal with it. I certainly won't be shedding any tears for someone who couldn't do their job properly.

I'm very sorry for those who used and liked the board, but there are better alternatives. The BBC is not the be-all-and-end-all.

I'm sure I read somewhere (on here) that Digital Spy had removed a thread about the closure of the R2 boards. Has the BBC extended its deadly grip to them as well?

I'll miss it for the 'heads up' for some shows I'd have missed as I don't listen that much these days. We'll just have to make more use of this board now for that.

I think that was done because:

a) It was a duplicate thread (in which case, why not merge it?)
b) One of the posters referred to a well known trolling poster (yes, we all know who) as a .... well, I won't repeat it lest I cause offence ( Wink ) (in which case, why not just remove the offensive message?)

The main thread over there is still alive and well:

When I posed the question of the 6 music boards on the R2 board. This was Peta's response:

posted by Peta (U24) -Host**, 8 Minutes Ago

Hi Lord Elpussall,

The topics for Marc Riley, Gideon Coe and Freakzone are hosted by them in order for people to feedback into their shows. Radio 2 gets the vast majority of comments by text and emails sent directly into the show teams.

You've seen the links I posted about cuts to BBC online?
