Hello everyone.

First, might I say it's a pleasure to be here and to have a voice again. I genuinely don't want to abuse this or be seen as abusing it, especially after the current dire state of my relationship with the BBC. (not just in premod but having been pitched further into the Outer Darkness, in terms of a "restricted account" - ie, barred, in circumstances I think are deeply suspicious and which I am actively challengnig,)

The last days have been very, very, frustrating. I suspect somebody at the BBC wants me gone, as my account went very quickly to premod and then to restricted, with a BBC hack diligently and retrospectively deleting the maximum number of posts in the shortest possible time so as to create an evidence trail to justify exclusion. I'm not Scott Clout; I don't go around expresing a single thought across three hundred different posts just so everyone gets a chance to read my words of wisdom. I don't suffer from tunnel vision or monomania. Besides, while in premod all those posts had necessarily been approved by a mod and then allowed to go to the boards - I know they got onto the MB's as I saw them there myself and other people read and replied to them. Therefore by definition they must have passed the House Rules as fit to post.

So what the Hell were they doing taking them down afterwards, retrospectively? The House Rules hadn't changed in between one Mod approving them for posting and another one taking them down... I can only think they were creating evidence to justify exclusion from the boards.

Such is life and inconsistent moderation...

Welcome aboard. I also didn't want to sully this excellent board with my tale of woe (which is spookily very similar to yours), but I think it needs to be told.

The people need to know how poor the management on the BBC board was. I also had a number of reasonable posts approved, only to see them deleted again a few hours later.

I think the thing which concerns me most is that I've never been pre-modded or banned. I use forums quite a lot - one for the car I own, one for the cars I used to own, one for the city I grew up in, a couple for education (being a teacher I can conduct myself reasonably well), as well as managing my own specialist regional forum (warning shameless plug follows) - www.nwex.co.uk

So you'd think that someone who conducts so much business online (been online since Prestel in 1984) and on forums would know how to behave!

I think you're both right to voice your concerns about the appalling and inconsistent standards of moderation on the BBC boards. From the number of people (myself included) who have been struck off the list for no justifiable reason, it's clear that something is afoot within the BBC. It would interesting to know what has prompted this internal paranoia - perhaps someday soon we'll find out.

I have a feeling it has much to do with politics......... and funding.

Interesting reading, am new to this board, still finding my way round but anyone can click the right buttons to see what I have said in other places, on this subject.
I found it very strange that having asked for advice, here, in the last few days about asking to be removed from pre mod, that suddenly I had been removed from this scary place, causing me to wonder how and why this had happened, spooky or what.
I had also spent time considering if it was worth reporting the situaton in general to a newspaper, or perhaps a rival TV channel, or Ofcom, but as I have only just started saving posts before they were removed, thought that there would be little point.

I'd like to see as many people as possible submitting a formal written complaint to the BBC itself and questioning the real motive for the recent actions and threatening to approach our respective Members of Parliament if a satisfactory explanation isn't given.

I know that, in the grand scheme of things, this isn't a major issue for the world at large, but it genuinely indicates that something's up at the BBC and we - as licence-fee payers - are being abused in some way.

The BBC is petrified that our senior politicians are going to strike at its very core soon so the timing is good to ask awkward questions of the BBC itself.

Still no reply from the BBC about my being expelled from all the MB's.

Latest complaint to gee them up a bit runs:-

I am extremely dissappointed that I have as yet had no reply from the BBC to my previous appeals challenging the decision to restrict my access to BBC messageboards. I would like to ask, most strongly, for the following two things to be done as I consider the original decisions to place me in premod and later to restrict my account were unfair, one-sided, and showed up serious issues with the BBC's moderation policy.

I would ask for clemency regarding an ill-advised attempt to return to the boards by opening another account and using a new identity. This was done out of desperation and frustration and out of a feeling that nobody at your end was taking my situation seriously nor was willing to do anything about it. Any other identities I have used over the years I am happy to see "die", but I wish to keep AgProv, a universal name by which I am also known on many other sites.

But I want the two following outcomes:-

Full restoration of the "AgProv" identity and freedom to resume posting. "U538194" - well, as the Prisoner said, I am a name, not a number!

At the very least I want resumed access to the h2g2 boards - I consider it most unfair and inequitable that my membership of h2g2, which PREDATES this site being taken over by the BBC, should also be ended, because of a disagreement on the now-defunct Radio Two boards! I have written a lot for h2g2 and some of my submissions were rated as being of such worth that the Guide took them up as Edited Entries with the full blessing of the Editors. The Editors will probably agree, once approached, that I have been more of an asset there than a liability.

And with the Radio Two messageboards, where the problem of inconsistent and partisan moderation occured in the first place now having been wound up, then surely a case exists for your looking at my case favourably?

This is my side of the story - PLEASE REPLY.

On the weekend of the 5th September 2010 - the BBC finally put out a press statement to attempt to clear up why Sarah Kennedy had mysteriously vanished from her early morning show. As her last appearance had been on the 13th August, the fact it took them three weeks to make an announcement of any kind was viewed as suspicious by some posters.

In common with many others that Saturday, I posted on the Radio Two boards to ask why it had taken so long, and to inquire into what very carefully wasn’t being said. There was also a lot of speculation, backed up with reference to the end of Johnny Walker as a BBC DJ, that Chris Evans had had a hand in it – that this man was getting more power than was good for him.

Foolishly in retrospect, I joined this speculation and by Sunday morning I was in premod again – as were several other regular and long-standing posters. This was galling and smacked of inconsistency and double standards, as one pro-Evans and anti-Kennedy poster (Scott Clout/Nelson) was allowed free rein to say whatever he liked, despite the fact his postings reeked of nasty triumphalism and were full of personal comment about Sarah K and those who were supporting her. Anyone trying to post to point this out had their postings deleted, or even went onto premod, as if Scott C-N was being protected by the BBC and given free rein to say what he thought.

During this period, I made about twenty postings, and seventeen of these were initially accepted and allowed to stand – being in premod means a mod has to read and approve of them, remember. Therefore if a BBC moderator actively read my postings and allowed them to stand, then by definition they were fit for publication and broke no house rules.

I had complained to the BBC and asked for my premod status to be reviewed. I had also pointed out that as the dispute was between me and the Radio Two boards, why should I be excluded from h2g2, a BBC forum where my postings were held to be of such worth that many of them had passed the selection process and been accepted as official Guide entries?

I still await formal response from the BBC for these earlier complaints.

But a strange thing happened after I complained.

All seventeen of the posts approved by a BBC moderator since I entered premod were taken down – all at once. Then they looked at postings to h2g2 and deleted four of my postings – despite the fact that a moderator had approved those for publication so they could NOT have offended against the house rules. It looked suspiciously as if somebody at the BBC was deliberately creating an evidence trail for what happened next – my account was now restricted, as I discovered on the Tuesday morning. This means that to all intents and purposes, I have been barred from the BBC as an undesirable, a troublemaker, all of whose postings are designed to “troll” and cause trouble.

Yet all seventeen of the postings they now emailed me to tell me had broken house rules had originally been directly read and approved as fit by a moderator – so how could they now turn round and tell me they broke exactly the same set of House Rules?

This is unreal and inconsistent and it is for this reason I request that the moderation decision to restrict and exclude me from BBC messageboards was wrong, even by the BBC's own rules, and would not stand scrutiny if this complaint advanced to a higher level. I am now going to reasearch what the next stage in this complaint would be if this is again ignored or bypassed.

Thank you and I look forward to a reply.

Paul Catlow

Hi Folks,

Sorry I've not been around much but I just don't listen to R2 any more. I bought a digital radio and its permanently on 6 music.

I just wanted you to know that two years on from this thread, I tried to post a comment on the Points of View Messageboard and was surprised to find I was still banned!

I sent two messages questioning why, but got no reply. It is a co-incidence that the board moderator Peta is the same moderator as the old R2 message board, and I made a complaint against her when it all "kicked off" a couple of years back?

Anyway, hope you are all well and R2 is still doing it for you guys.

Andy

Andy, good to hear from you. I'm not sure R2 is doing it for many of us - my listening is single figures/hours now.

And this forum doesn't attract new members, but there's still a good number of regular contributors so we're here because we're here!
