They are Ally.

I was just making the point about the Folk and YM boards on Radio 2 in regard to Scott, who never posted on either.

The inference up above was that Scott is responsible, or partially responsible for the closure of the Radio 2 board - which I don't think is the case myself, but continue to think there was something most peculiar about his presence on there.

I don't know to be honest. I'm just sad it's come to this, but grateful to have found an alternative place to post.

And, as I've mentioned elsewhere, a place on the web that isn't under the thumb of the BBC's PR machine.

I was in the middle of typing a reply to said troll's observation he was being blamed for the board's closure before deciding it wasn't worth the risk of being banned again. It wasn't going to be anything unpleasant, but that hadn't mattered before. Ah well, it's therapeutic to bask in the warm glow of civilised company here.

The licence fee is going to be cut in a couple of years and I think this is just one of the first steps towards cutting costs. There was an article on the Telegraph website (yes, you'll find I lurk there too) about the established animosity between the BBC Trust and the minister now in charge, so we can see who won that.

It could be the barrage of complaints about the board's content did have some effect, but I tend to stick to a fairly narrow range of boards and blogs and haven't seen anything approaching the indulgent dominance of one troll on any of these. Perhaps the more diverse content and demographic of the audience presented too juicy a target.

Just anounced:

There will be no increase to the TV licence fee in 2011 after the BBC Trust offered to freeze it at £145.50 for the next two years.

I thought I heard on the radio news that it would be cut after being frozen.

Just the link on the BBC Radio 2 page has gone. Last time I looked you can still navigate to the board through your history.

And not a mention about the fate of the messageboards by any Radio 2 presenter. Remember how Jeremy Vine used to promote the messageboard as being a way of "engaging with the show's discussions" back in the old days?

History is being erased in a way that they hope nobody will notice.

I really wish there was a way to save the threads, especially the important ones like the one on Radcliffe & Maconie.

If you type message boards into the Search box, you'll be taken to a page where there's a link to the various stations etc that have them. Radio 2 is still there.

As far as the licence fee is concerned it appears I was confusing a radio announcement with an article in the Telegraph. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/bbc/8005930/Government-paves-way-for-TV-licence-fee-to-be-cut.html

Someone on the boards said they had 'captured' most of a thread.

I don't know what that meant - perhaps you do?

I think they were always going to cull the message boards. Once Mark Thompson announced that they were cutting half the websites, the R2 boards were a prime candidate.

If he had any influence, which I very much doubt, Master Nelson probably hurried the decision along a little. The only mystery was, how he got away with his constant bleatings, and anyone who dared challange him, was promptly modded for it. I'm sure he'll continue his weekend rants on Facebook. A good enough reason not to go within a mile of the place.

I guess they mean actually performing screen-grabs of the MB in sequence. That creates image files of each page-view. It's very laborious when threads are many pages long but it's relatively easy to do.

The alternative is to use screen recording and capture software (such as Camtasia which I use in my work for training, etc) which records a "movie" of the whole screen and everything you do on it. When it's played back it looks identical to the "real" screen you were looking at.

Thank you, ColinB.

I had no idea what it meant, but now I do, it seems that it's really only of any value to the person who 'captured' it, or can it be shared?

No, it can be shared by any common means. I use video screen recorders to create self-contained "screen movies" complete with live narration etc in order to share them over the web as screencasts (video podcasts) with those who need them. I did a large assignment earlier this year for The Open University in which I captured a whole series of tutorials on software development.

They can be posted to the web or sent via email - it depends on the file format and how big the files become. All mine were then put into a video editing program to create proper videos, complete with professional commentaries and music.

For still pictures on Windows PCs (not Macs), simply press "Alt" plus "PrtScr" together to create a snapshot of the whole screen. Alternatively, use "Shift" + "PrtScr" to capture the uppermost window.

These will then be saved to your computer as an image file - either PNG, TIF or JPG - which can then be opened in any image editing application on the computer.

On Macs it's easier as they can be instantly opened in Quicktime.

It may surprise some posters to learn that I still have the old BBC message board on "My Favourites", the one which closed down after Evans took over Drivetime Wink ,

Does anybody else have this facility?

So if I click on it, I get the old boards back up and can read all the threads as if it's still active...
The last post was December 12th 2006 by somebody called SantaFe Fan Confused never heard of him...

That's because all the data still sits on the database server and the pages that are filled with text when they're selected are still on the servers too. It's easier to leave everything there in order that people don't get what are called "Error 404" messages - the search engines don't like them either so that's why they leave the info where it is.

I thought of grabbing the pages one by one, but really don't have the time (or the endurance).

Hopefully someone out there can at least grab the Radcliffe & Maconie thread. Smile

By the way, here's the old Radio board:

You can bookmark the particular page that thread is on and save it that way.

I would offer to do it for you as a continuous screen movie grab (from which still frames can then be grabbed) but at 545 posts it's a tad too long!

Yes, just save the link to the individual boards/or thread and they will still be there. It will show 'deleted' at the top but the postings will all be there. We found some old ones from the Coffee Bar forum (closed in 2006) the other week on the Coffee Shop thread.

Just a bit!

I know that I can bookmark the page, but one day the thread could be deleted.

They will be there forever as long as you have the link Barty. The ones we found were 5 years old. I've bookmarked the individual board links.

It's only the board title name that is deleted.

I was put on pre mod precisely 4 minutes before the R2 Messageboard closed today
What the hell was that all about?
I hadn't even posted anything today
Either they wanted to dissuade me from posting something they saw as non PC or simply did not want me to have the final posting especially because a new thread about how wonderful Chris Evans was had been mischievously started only 5 minutes before the board closed which seemed more than odd to me
Fortunately some other posters did get in there to express the views I would have posted had I been allowed to within the autocratic BBC regime
I've always doubted there was much real democracy within the BBC but today's events even surprised me

Odd to many of us, I'm sure, and a pretty clear indication of the way they wanted the board to remain in perpetuity - making darned sure that Evans' profile remains high whilst supressing anything that's negative towards him or other aspects of the operation.

It surely stinks!

It's 3 hours since the last post on R2MB so I take it that it's closed, ceased, defunct, deceased, popped its clogs, shuffled off this mortal coil, gorn to that big forum in the sky.......*sigh*

Interestingly, Helen May placed the ultimate post, trust a woman to have the last word. Wink

Yes the board officially closed at 12 noon today but there were a few posters got in a little after this
I'm glad Helen got the last post
At least it was someone who talks sense rather than some of the obvious alternatives we might have had

Having just visited the R2 board it appears that whilst the thread titles are still up a number of threads have been deleted (or I'm being dumb). I have to ask what the replies to Lonegroovers thread was if anyone read them? Thanks in anticipation.

Heavens that surprises me! I thought there were a few posts after mine on other threads. I was trying to reply to another thread but the blasted 3 minute thing stopped me and the end came before it was up.

Isn't it interesting, however, that LG's "I love Evans" post sneaked in there bang on the button?

I can only see the title of that thread as it says it's deleted when I click on it. Do you know what the three responses were? Some threads do still open for me, very strange.
