Yes it was! Smile

I could hardly believe my ears as I've sent in loads of Showstoppers without success!

It's amazing when people moan about so many emails and texts read out - and one of forum members gets a mention. Maybe more of us should do it? Jeremy Vine is usually the place where Helens name is also mentioned.

My claim to fame is with Jeremy Vine (who was depping for Jimmy Young) on the day that George Harrison's death was announced.

I emailed Jeremy to say that I thought that "She Said, She Said" by The Beatles (from Revolver) would be a fitting final tribute to The Quiet One simply because it had such a great and characteristic piece of guitar playing by George - especially the opening riff.

I also said that it would be good not to play one of the same old Harrison standards like "My Sweet Lord" or "Something". I was tempted to suggest "What Is Life?" (from All Things Must Pass and a favourite of Johnnie Walker's) as an alternative, but didn't. I doubt whether Jeremy would have been familiar with it anyhow!

Jeremy agreed, and played my suggested track right at the end and up to the news jingle. That made me happy!

Actually Jeremy is a big Beatles fan Colin, so I suspect he would have known the track. Not long after he took over the show I emailed asking who was the Beatles fan on the team as he was playing quite a lot of their tracks. He replied saying it was him, which surprised me given his age.

The Beatles have broad appeal across the ages I think, I like them too and I'm a year or two younger than Jeremy.

My reference to Harrison's "What Is Life" was made really because the solo box-set album "All Things Must Pass" (1970) is much less well known and slightly more obscure than mainstream "Beatles" stuff. Most people will, of course, know "My Sweet Lord" from that collection but the chances of people knowing "What Is Life" or perhaps the wonderful "Isn't It A Pity" or even "Awaiting On You All" is much less likely. I'd be very surprised indeed if Jeremy knows these songs well - although it's clear that Johnnie Walker does because he plays them regularly.

PS: "What Is Life" contains not only some great guitar work by George but also by his old mate Eric Clapton.

I have the All Things Must Pass triple boxed LP album which I bought when I was still at school, some lovely songs in those albums which I haven't played for years.

Yes, I rushed out and bought mine from my local WHSmith when it was first released, too! It cost £5.00, I seem to recall. I funded it with my paper round whilst still at school as well.

I don't know where the included poster of George is, though. I'm sure it will be among my junk in the loft as I wouldn't have consciously have chucked it out even during house-moves.

I didn't buy the set, but was it in an orange box? I know my friend had it and she would come round to our house and we'd listen to it a lot.

No, it had a black box with a monochrome picture of Harrison seated on a stool in his garden looking like a rather depressed gnome!

The orange set (which I also have in its original form) is the "Concert for Bangladesh" box set that came out later.

I knew there was an orange boxed set somewhere Colin! I'd stopped buying ex Beatles records by then though.

Yes, my consumption of "Beatles" material petered out not long after. I liked Ringo's first album - the one that contained "Sweet Sixteen" - and also Paul's first album as well as "Band on The Run", but I always had mixed thoughts about Lennon's "Imagine".

The four individual members of The Beatles were best when working as a single unit, I feel.

In my opinion, yes. There was "Rubber Soul" (1966) which is superb, and my favourite Beatles album which was "Abbey Road" (1969). During the making of the latter they were starting the process of going in their directions but if George Martin is right they worked as a cohesive unit during those sessions. It certainly has some of the finest examples of their best musicianship.

I would agree with with Rubber Soul, my favourite Beatles album, my date was a bit premature but as wikipedia says "Abbey Road is regarded as one of The Beatles' most tightly constructed albums, although the band was barely operating as a functioning unit at the time" Very Happy

I prefer George Martin's account rather than an open online encyclopaedia! He has said (in a documentary I have) that, given all the problems they were experiencing, they worked together on what was obviously their swansong album surprisingly well and the experience for him of making the album was "just like it was in the early days". I'm happy with that - especially since the album is so good.

Sorry to change the subject but did anyone hear the Manic Street Preachers playing and talking on Drivetime on Wednesday this week
I'm a big fan and used to go to their gigs in South East Wales before virtually anyone else had heard of them
My mate used to play in a band called Freudian Slip based in Newport and his band used to get bigger audiences than the Manics which he finds completely incomprehensible even today
I was slightly disappointed that they played only the latest single already heavily played from the Radio 2 A List and a cover of the Small Faces Track All or Nothing
Both were excellent but I would have liked to have heard a preview of some tracks from the forthcoming album released next week especially as there was so much talk about it on the show
My son is actually called James Dean Bradfield after the band's singer and guitarist
To me he is a legend in his own lifetime almost like the original James Dean

Ruddle,

I saw the Manics a few years ago, Heavenly records were celebratin their 100 or 1000 release or something and festival halls, Doves headlined (great ) but the Manics were special guest as their first couple of singles were on Heavenly, I'd fogotten how good they were when they started all the punk stuff You Love Us etc

Sorry to say this but I'm not really into the Beatles, Embarassed probibly my mothers influence really she was into the Stones and didn't like the Beatles, the tracks I do like all tend to be GH songs I think they have dated better than some others. I can't explain it really, love the Kinks, Stones, Who and Beach Boys from that era but not the fab four.

Yes Undiscovered I think the early Manics tracks were the best but everything they have done has been first class
I'll never forget the shiver which went down my spine when I first heard Their album Generation Terrorists and with the track Natwest Barclays Midland Lloyds in a way they predicted the credit crunch years before it actually happened
I am inclined to agree with you about the Beatles although they were great musicians and their music defined the decade
Personally I used to like the Hollies and some of the other artists you mention
I used to like the Brum sound with bands like the Idle Race Moody Blues and others which did not always make me very popular at school considering I was brought up only 12 miles from Liverpool

Did Helen get another mention on Simon's show tonight, with a Showstopper suggestion?

I got a quick mention too (one of many who suggested Johnny Cash's "Walk the Line")
