Today is the 40th Anniversary of the death of Jimi Hendrix.
Any fans on the board, anyone ever see him live back in the day (lucky so and sos) and/or what are your alltime favourite Hendrix tracks?
Here's Jimi with a wonderful live rendition of Little Wing at the Albert Hall in 1969:

I love Hey Joe,Soulsis...

I listened to a documentary ...Star Spangled Hendrix.....about him the other week on Radio 4 ..
It was presented by Tom Robinson to tie in with the 40th anniversary of his death, exploring the pressure he was under to make an explicit political declaration.
More details here but unfortunately not still available to Listen Again to

I was just a bit too young to see Hendrix live, but "Crosstown Traffic" and "All Along The Watchtower" are my two faves. They're also my 26-year-old son's favourites too - which shows I've done something right as a father! |

I saw Hendrix twice in 1967, firstly on a package tour in Leeds with the Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens and . . . Englebert Humperdinck. Second time was on a huge bill with the Nice, Amen Corner, the Move and Pink Floyd (with Syd). Not a bad night out for less than a quid.
Favourite tracks? Both versions of Voodoo Chile, If 6 was 9 and Red House.
I'm glad I saw him early in his career. I think he peaked with Electric Ladyland, before the drugs and hangers-on got a grip, and was a busted flush by the time he died. |

BlimeySG - I'm in awe - Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens, Englebert, Nice, Amen Corner, The Move and Pink Floyd with Syd AND JIMI HENDRIX. Reads like a Who's Who of the 60s. What I wouldn't give for a time machine to be able to go back and experience gigs like that.
I absolutely love If 6 was 9. Jimi was a big admirer of Rory Gallagher, and this track always reminds me of Rory for some reason:

Hendrix fans may be interested in a BBC4 prog tonight (Fri 24) at 1005 on his 'London' years. Should be good. It's probably a repeat but no matter.
(Quite what the London years were is not clear, as he spent most of his time from 67-70 in London anyway). |

People moan about "repeats" on UK TV channels but I'm really thankful for BBC4 and the fact that its latest programmes are repeated so often in the first week or so of transmission. BBC4 rocks!!! |

I remember the first time I heard Hendrix's "All along the watchtower" I was in our local youth club [youth club..wots a youth club???] and the youth leader put in on the reel to reel tape.
It made the hairs on my neck stand on end...still my fave record of all time. |

My favourite Hendrix track is The Wind Cries Mary
Heard it for about the umpteenth time on Heartbeat the other day on ITV 3
It's a great track but just to digress I can't understand why they keep repeating ad infinitum the same episodes of Heartbeat on ITV 3
After all ITV has the rights to all the shows broadcast since 1995 so why can't they show some alternate episodes
I mainly watch it for the classic cars used in the show and a mate of mine used to make quite a lot of money renting out his Wolseley to them |

I'll agree with that Geminiman.. it was amazing to hear for the very first time.. it's not just the words or the song itself for me, it's the "bits in between" as Jimi said.
The atmosphere, sound effects and the place it takes you to are all just wonderful, just like the rest of "Electric Ladyland"
Oh how I wish Jimi could have recorded a few more tracks in this vein such as "Rainy Day, Dream Away"... simply superb. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I would have gone for Hey Joe or Watchtower, until the last few weeks I finally got round to putting the Voodoo Child album on my ipod.
Now I would go for tracks like Third Stone From The Sun or Spanish Castle Magic, then again maybe it's because these are new to me. _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

Yes Undiscovered..There's a lot more to Jimi than Hey Joe.. although it's a great track too of course. Glad you took a liking to Castles Made of Sand...
Electric Ladyland remains my favourite. "House Burning Down" is an amazing sound.. I just wish he could have produced another album like this. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07
