Britain has become a country where people can either live/ sit on the dole or claim other benefts, because they find it easy to do this. Some do want to work, but can't and are treated like those who just for example - Keep getting pregnant, Drinking and being lazy sitting around day and day out -because it's the only way they know.

I'am not saying women are not allowed to have babies, but I know of one in our town who must keep getting pregnant every year. These people are just rinsing the system, and probarly her partner is living on the dole too. I have also seen people sitting around drinking on street corners ( Those shouldn't be entitled to benefits )

It's a disgrace where someone who has just left school / Uni or College can't get a job, and when they claim for the dole, they get tarnished if they can't get a job.

There needs to be a radical change in the benefit system and those people who are LAZY shouldn't be entitled to anything, someones addiction is costing the tax payer millions.

Allegedly. I guess it must be true if (a) the Tories say so and (b) if the Tory Press says so. Actually, the reality is a lot different as anybody who works in the benefit system will tell you - and not a problem that's as easy to solve as those silly people in government seem to suggest. Still, at least it gets the blue-rinse brigade baying.

Tarnishing? Whatever next - tarring and feathering?

We all know what Mark is trying to get at. There ARE many people who never work because they do not want to, and they make great efforts to justify their benefit claims.

There are so many ways of claiming benefit, and there are large benefit payments to be got - it's common for some workless families to be 'earning' over 20,000 a year.

An office that I go into often, at a customer, has some women there who work only three days a week. They used to work 5 days a week then found out if they worked just three days they would qualify for benefits which took their income to nearly the same as they would get working 5 days. That's just an example that I know of.

One of my brothers (I have six) was made redundant in the 80s- he was a miner- he hadn’t been a miner very long, he wasn’t that old- just a few years older than me- he’s not even fifty yet. He hasn’t worked since he was made redundant. Various schemes have come and gone that were supposed to get people like him back to work- they made him take a job as a care worker a while back but at six foot four, over nineteen stone and a hate-filled attitude to everyone, he terrified the old people on his first day- so he was sacked- that was ten years ago. He has a wife, four grown up children and two very nice cars- all funded on benefits- he did buy his own house with his redundancy cash though – so he’s quite happy on benefits- why would he want to go back to work now? It used to drive me mad – I used to pay truckloads of tax before I retired, but the tax I paid, was still less than he was earning in benefits over the year. Council tax – Child benefit- whatever the job seekers allowance bit has been called over the years- free school meals- butter and milk tokens (not sure if they still get those) free prescriptions. Oh and he still gets free coal which was part of his redundancy package – free coal for life! About a ton a month I think it is. The Government is spending our taxes on importing coal to give to ex miners because they were made redundant, you couldn’t make it up!

Well I was thinking the benefit one of those office ladies gets each month, for the privelige of working just three days a week, is probably the same as my monthy income tax. So I'm thinking my tax money is going straight into someone else's pocket while they sit at home.

I'm self-employed and these days I often sit at home three days a week because I don't have enough work coming in, but I don't get paid for that. Confused

Hopefully John, you are able to save for a rainy day when there isn't any work? This is what the women who was talking about on Jeremy Vine show when they were discussing this subject. "People who are self employed should save for a rainy day". At present when self employed people have to claim the dole they still have to go through the same process to claim, but once you have received your dole money you could be back to work again. It just seems a know win situation for those people.

Mark,

Being self employed doesn't mean you have money to spare...........

Well Mark, I do have money for a rainy day, still got half my redundancy money, which probably means I wouldn't get benefit even if I couldn't work for a while. Crying or Very sad

Oh and I have to pay half of next year's tax IN ADVANCE. Mad

I pay full whack council tax, water rates, about £2000 a year. How many millions never pay that I wonder. Rolling Eyes

I didn't hear the show but obviously that woman has never been self-employed otherwise she'd be aware of the reality for many.

With the exception of a 5-year PAYE contract at the end of the 90s I've been self-employed since 1984. How nice to learn that I could have been claiming benefits when I was not working! That's news to me!

When you're self-employed you're on your own - no state safety net, no bills paid for by the state, nothing. When you make a profit at the end of the year they want their slice, but when you don't have a penny nobody wants to know.

Have any of you watched Saints and Scroungers? I think the people on that programme show up the true benifit cheats. What some people have got away with and are still getting away with will shock all genuine hard working tax payers. But it takes time and a lot of man power to root them out Evil or Very Mad

The system needs changing...easier said than done....... Rolling Eyes

We have a Sex Discrimination Act a Race Relations Act Disability Discrimination laws Religious Hatred legislation and laws preventing discrimination againt gay people all of which I agree with in varying degrees but I have always said there should be a Self Employed discrimination Act
For years the self employed have been discriminated against when for example it comes to getting mortgage or other finance and not just with the benefits system
There is little job security now whether people are employed or self employed so everyone should receive equal treatment but in practice it simply does not happen
