I started a similar thread over at the Beeb but here goes.
I have found myself increasingly avoising Radio 2 weekdays in the daytimes.
There are some great shows in the evenings (The recent Elvis tribute concert was great, for example) & at weekends but I find many of the day time shows a turn off.
Ken Bruces' wildly fluctuating tones & OTT noises has me reaching for the retune button. A shame as the show has a good format.
Jeremy Vine is unbearably smug,
I used to like steve wright but his afternoon show has become stale & irritating, Enough factoids & all the rest.
Drivetime is far too cluttered for comfortable listening. Do we really need Homework Sucks & all the other features which clutter the show?

What do others think?
Here are my suggestions
Suzi Quatro would be ideal for the mid morning show. I wonder how Gaby Roslin would full the lunchtime show?
As Gloria Hunniford is in retirement, I suggest Paul O'Grady for a more relaxing afternoon show & to round off daytime listening Bob Harris would be ideal for a relaxed, mellow Drivetime

The only two daytime shows that are worth bothering with are Ken's and, of course, Drivetime.

I'm no fan of Vine, and have an intense dislike of Wright and his lousy afternoon show.

My daytime R2 listening is now limited to weekdays from 6.15am (when the alarm clock radio comes on) to 7.03am, when the news finishes but - hopefully - just before Evans opens his gob.

I'm out of the habit of listening during the day at all - Evans has prompted that change of habit - unless I'm in the car, during which I might listen to Ken or tune in to Vine for as long as I can bear the silly discussion topics and Jeremy's "walking on hot coals" style of presentation.

In fact, I'd say my weekly R2 listening habit has been reduced to a mere few hours, mostly at weekends.

My 'live' listening starts with Ken followed by Jeremy, and usually switch off after that. I'll listen in the car to Steve Wright but it's only usually for 15-20 mins at a time.

It gets switched on again for Simon Mayo, but it's usually 5.30 at the earliest by the time I remember there is radio at that time! Habits are hard to break after 3 years of silence.

As for breakfast shows, at the moment it's an hour of Lynn Parsons on a good old fashioned programmeable cassette recorder. Not sure what that will be after the end of the month though.

I listen to less of Radio 2 these days. My listening is restricted to Bruce, Carrington, SOTS, Pick of the Pops, Gambo, O'Leary Walker.

I no longer listen to Harris due to the ridiculous time slot he's been demoted to.

I agree about Bob harris Saturday show. Relegating it to after midnight is absurd.
I often miss Gambo's show after the time change but was in saturday evening & caught it. Exceptionally good radio, one of the best on Radio 2.

What surprises me is the high tolerance levels for Ken Bruce!!

Tolerance doesn't enter into it when it's something you enjoy though Smile.

Same here. We enjoy KB in the office and Popmaster (got a 36/39 on Thursday!)

I normally switch back sometime after 7 ready for R&M.

The schedule does get a bit samey though - aside from the playlist overkill I've started to hear a few classics more than once in a week.

So it's quite refreshing to hear very different tunes on FNIMN, MS Desmo, Paul O'Grady and Alan T. at the weekends.

As probably everyone knows by now I intensely dislike the present breakfast show but I think Ken is very entertaining and I love Popmaster and this week I'm particularly looking forward to hearing tracks from the new Manics album on Ken's show
I think Jeremy Vine is OK but sometimes as with all news based shows they get short of stories so we end up getting subjects which are a bit obscure
I have always liked Steve Wright but I agree the format has become stale and rather boring and I enjoyed having Dale Winton sitting in recently
Simon Mayo has always in my mind been a very interesting and competent broadcaster on every network he has been on and I like Drivetime although I don't get to listen very often
Again I don't often get to hear Radcliffe and Maconie but on the occasions I have heard it I have always been impressed and I really cannot understand why Bob Shennan seems to slowly be ditching one of the networks flagship shows
Everyone seems to want to standardise everything these days and it seems there is no room any more for anything a little different however good it may be

Daytime listening for me has fell by 95% since Wogan left, as i have said i do not dislike Evans i just prefer a different style of show so its radio 4 or classic FM in the day. i am a great fan of Radcliffe and Maconie and i listen as often as possible. Apart from that its SOTS then R4 on a Saturday till jazz record requests on R3. Sundays its evenings only as i cannot stand Michael Ball or EP. Alan Titchmarsh, Sunday half Hour and sometimes Clare Teal. I miss Jonathon Ross i liked his radio show but never watched his TV show, i miss Parky too as i like the music he played. Basically there is little that interests me on the mainstream and i feel the specialist shows are going to go sooner than later.

I have returned from living in Egypt for 5 years and even listened daily there with the help of my computer.

NOW...... I only listen to J Vine.....so sad... Evil or Very Mad BBC2 don't cater for me any more...... Crying or Very sad

I only listen to Radio 2 on weekdays when I'm at work. On my way to work I usually have local radio on, mainly for traffic news. From 8.00am to 4.30 I like all the presenters, I like the Ken Bruce show the best, however i usually miss part of popmaster because the phone rings !! Then at half 4 back to local radio for the drive home. Dependant on who sits in when presenters are on holiday I switch to a different station, eg Zoe Ball, Dale Winton & Liza Tarbuck result in a station switch Smile

The quality of daytime Radio 2 has definitely declined over the last few years (at the same rate the ratings have gone up, probably!) and I don't listen as much.

Ken's great but -like all the rest - he's let down by a very repetitive playlist and limited range of music. Same songs over and over, and bland new bands getting horribly overplayed.

You're right there. If I had to put money on when the following songs would be played:

Macarthur Park
War of The Worlds (extended version)

I would bet £50 that they'd be played by KB just after Popmaster around 10.50am.

I know the majority of you dislike Chris Evans but the music on his show is soooo much better than the music on Kens show.
Look at the music today on Chris' show:- The Beatles, Boston, Edison Lighthouse, Culture Club, Rose Royce, Stones, Faces, Kids From Fame, Elvis, Olivia Newton John, Robert Plant, Tom Robinson, Eddie And The Hot Rods, Chairman Of The Board, Madness, Glen Campbell.
I find that is a great selection of music and a massive improvement on the music played on Kens show.
I know Ken plays some good stuff but a lot of the time it's Robbie Williams followed by Enrique Iglesias followed by Kylie etc etc, you can listen to stuff like that on any indentikit commercial blandoh station.
I personally like all the daytime presenters, it's just the music on some of them that annoys me.

He could play the most fantastic music in the world Gazmando but I can't stand his voice for more than 30 seconds.

As far as I'm concerned at that hour especially the music only counts for 50% the presenter has got to do the rest for me. He gets 0%, so I'll never listen to him.

I think we differ there totally Helen.
As a person and presenter I have no qualms with Ken Bruce.
(Apart from the excruciating fake laughter he induces from Lyn Bowles).
To me the most important part of music radio is the music, even though the presenters are important to me too.
You could have Johnny Walker followed by Ed Stewart followed by Desmond Carrington followed by Terry Wogan and I'd still be unhappy if they kept playing the bland stuff I mentioned earlier.

Give me that choice of artists (but vary the tracks - e.g. not 'More Than A Feeling' in the case of Boston) and change the presenter to one who talks to you like an adult rather than shouts at you and behaves like a buffoon, then you might have a deal!

The problem with that list is that I could still probably guess most of the actual tracks from those artists.

How about (and I haven't looked):
Something off "the blue album" eg Twist And Shout
More Than A Feeling
Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes
Karma Chameleon
Car Wash
Brown Sugar
Stay With Me
Fame
err... OK, dunno. A Little Less Conversation?
Physical
His Dreary New Single
5678
Do Anything You Want To Do
Give Me Just A Little More Time
Our House

Pity about all the banal rubbish in between the music, eh Gaz?

That isn't a complaint that can be leveled at Johnnie Walker's recent shows - last week's included. The music has been really excellent and his interviews have been proper interviews from which we discover something about his interviewees. This week's chat with Andy McCluskey exemplified what I expect from Radio 2.

Just had a look and you got 8 out of 17 correct Smile You're right you can pretty much guess what they'll play.

JV yesterday played Come On by the Stones, a bit of an improvement on Brown Sugar.

Er, in my view the only way you can improve on playing Rolling Stones is by not playing them at all. Not a fan!

I'm not a\ fan of the Stones but I like some of their stuff. I thought "Miss You" was the best thing they ever did.
But "Brown Sugar" is my pet hate. Has anyone ever listened to the lyrics? Little white boys getting their kicks imagening a slavemaster beating black female slaves. Totally obnoxious

Yes, I was pleased to hear that, too. It certainly does make a change from the "standards" that are wheeled out by producers whose musical knowledge is evidently limited.

Elsewhere on R2 I heard "Under My Thumb" played, too, which is one my all-time Stones favourites.

Despite the above, JV still resorted to playing "God Only Knows" in recognition of Brian Wilson's talents - so we're not quite there yet!

PS: I adore "Go Only Knows" - but there's much more from the Beach Boys that never gets an airing, as is the case with the wonderful Rolling Stones.

I was getting a bit peed off by the antics of the other Wossy on BBC London this morning so switched back to radio 2. Just in time to hear the Show tune "America" from West side story. Fabulous! I then dozed off for the first hour of Chris evans show which i enjoyed, then he started getting a bit noisy so i switched over, Had to get up then anyway.
I hadn't listened to Chris' show since i resigned from my job back in June, but enjoyed it. I may tentatively return to it tommorow morning

I think it was either here or on the BBC MB's that I saw the joke where in a presenter asks the presenter which Beach Boys track he should play
The clueless producer says "God only knows!" so that track is played by default/ Close to the truth?

I picked up on that one Colin but he mentioned he was reading Brian Wilson's biography and I believe God Only knows is a personal favourite of JVs (when they did their oldies selections on Steve's show a while back). So I guess that was one of his own choices that he stuck in on the show. He played it when we were in the studio too Wink )

It doesn't matter how good the music on the breakfast show may be
Listeners never get to hear it properly because of the presenter constantly talking over the music and shouting at people as if they are complete idiots
And I do agree with Helen that at that time of the day the presenter's style and performance IS important
I think most listeners like me want to be eased into the day rather than have the rude awakening they get at the moment
Personally I can't wait for Lynn Parsons to start on the Smooth breakfast show in early October
At least I'll have a great show to get me through until the New Year when I may just have to switch off again

Yes, I agree with you wholeheartedly. The presenters sets the tone and the context for the music - and other stuff - and is therefore of paramount importance.

We all have our music collections and if all we were interested in was the music then we could play our own - or play from freely-accessible Spotify playlists or whatever.

That was how we were until this year. We had it on in several rooms so you could go about your day not missing anything. Then we had to avoid CE, so shopped around with Heart, Smooth and Absolute, and then Zoe started sitting in for Ken on a regular basis, so we stayed with our alternative choices. It didn't really seem worthwhile retuning for JV if Chris Tarrant was covering for Steve Wright afterwards, and though I can get by with Simon Mayo, we find Geoff Lloyd on Absolute Radio's Hometime quite amusing. So with the exception of MC Desmo on Friday's, and most of Sunday when we enjoy Aled, SW, EP and PO'G, we're not R2 stalwarts any more.

Sad really. Crying or Very sad

Me too Colin, in fact most things by the Beach Boys - well up to Pet Sounds at least. Little Duece Coupe was my first LP puchase at 32/6d Razz
I think "Warmth of the Sun" takes some beating too.
When we were in California last May, I bought a Best of the Beach Boys cd to play in the car whilst driving the coast road as your son did recently.
I have all those tracks many times but now that cd has a special place in my collection.

Sad to say, but if I'm at home Radio 2 is never on these days, the radios have been tuned to Heart FM and I can't be bothered to faff around re-tuning for the odd programme.

If I'm working I'll listen to Janice Long and Alex Lester via the I-Player, daytime Radio 2 is a big no-no! Shame, I used to listen all the time, but now it seems stuck in a time-warp, some presenters can go on for years and still appear fresh, whilst others have become stale and boring.

Radio 2 needs someone with the guts to shake things up a bit, they have all the right presenters, but they are just not using them to the best of their advantage.

I can concur with most of what has been said above,

I wasn't a great Wogan fan, but boy do I appreciate and miss him now.

Since January my R2 listening declined severely and I'm afraid to say that Evans arrival on the Breakfast show has been the catalyst. I've never really liked him, but did listen to DT, probably because he arrived back at the BBC somewhat more humble than before, but he was reverting to type towards the end of his tenure of DT with his ME ME ME, I I I attitude, and his treatment of Johnny Saunders, who had fast become his new sycophant. The 'Goodbye Drivetime Hello Breakfast' live show with all his chums proved to me he had returned to type, no other DJ had ever had such a show!

I started off listening to R5live as a replacement , but football talk bores me to death, so after trying all other options (local commercial etc) I still haven't found something I want to listen to in the morning, and that is what really gripes with me - the fact that the BBC cannot offer me a suitable breakfast show, my only choice being Radio 1 or Radio 1.5 (CE).

My morning listening is now the previous nights Radcliffe and Maconie if home, my Ipod if in the car. This often prompts me to miss the start of KB, which although I like, I no longer care if I miss some of it.

I can't listen to JV as he just peddles the BBC's take on the news, with what seems like always the same contributors, often repeating phone ins which have been covered earlier in the day on R5live.

Strangely I do like Steve Wright and have listened to him for years (the non stop oldies are a must) but even this show is fast becoming a plug fest for the guests to advertise their wears.

Its back to the Ipod for drivetime as I find Simon Mayo smug, monotone and boring, just as I did on Radio 1, there are plenty of other better Ex R1 DJ's who should have been ahead of him on the list, but I guess we should be grateful at least it wasn't a 'sleb'

My weekend listening amounts to Sounds Of The Sixties and Pick of the Pops, and Graham Nortons arrival on Saturdays won't change that - what a cr@p choice!

Rant over! and Hi from a first time poster!

Funnilly enough, that is how I feel about Ken Bruce. His voice drives me up the wall! I can tolerate evans' high pitched voice till he gets too manic but Ken Bruces' vocal inflections Rolling Eyes I suppose we all react to different irritating voices differently!

I can't understand peoples aversion to Ken, but hey ho each to their own!

On the subject of music, I think its 70/30 in favour of the music, for example I quite like Simon Bates, but in no way could I listen to his breakfast show as I can only take classical music in small doses.

But that rule does not apply to Chris Evans!

Oh how I totally agree - now had you posted that on the old R2MB you would have been advised to switch off then! I and many others voiced the same concern that there is absolutely nothing to listen to at breakfast. Unfortunately we were treated very badly by daring to voice this concern but more importantly in the BBC's eyes, that it was as a criticism of 'he who will get what he wants, when he wants'.

Or we'd have been treated to the same of spiel that people like "shouty, lively breakfast shows".

So why are Classic FM's breakfast show and Radio 4's Today programme are oceans of calm and quiet? They certainly relax me on the morning commute.

I really do feel that the R2 Management are missing out on an opportunity to promote an additional station that will appeal to those people who enjoy "mellow style of radio presentation". Surely it can't be that difficult to create a separate peak time schedule that can be available as an option at breakfast and drive time. Radio 1 manages, so does the World service and Radio 5. We have more than enough Dj's who are shoved into the less popular timeslots who would surely jump at the chance to be on air as a preferable alternative station to the current schedule. More happy listeners has to be good for the future of R2. Very Happy
