Just watched a cracking programme about Herb Alpert on BBC 4. I dunno if it's been on before - if so, it's the first time I've seen it.
What a fascinating guy (and very easy on the eye in his younger days it has to be said on behalf of the ladies ), great programme all about the Tijuana Brass, how he set up A & M, signing The Carpenters, and how his career adapted and changed over the years - a blessed life really but he is a wonderfully gentle and understated fella.
Highly recommended. It's on again tomorrow afternoon or you can watch it here:

I've recorded them both as well! I think he was on Steve Wright this afternoon, I was in the car and heard a couple of his tracks being played but missed the interview.
One thing that's bugging me though is that his "So What's New", which Steve played, was a theme for either a light programme or Radio 2 radio show. I can't think what it was but it was either a breakfast one or one that went out around the Drivetime slot. I'm guessing late 60s early 70s.
Anyone know?

Just watched both and are as you say Soulsis, fascinating! I loved the old clips of LA in the 50s and 60s and wish I'd been able to travel then.
Great to hear and see how his single Rise came about, as it reminds me of my first trip to Florida in 79 and it was playing everywhere, I bought the single!
Did you watch the second show?

I only saw the one programme H. Hadn't realised there was a second one.
I'll try and check it out on the iplayer later on today. |

The second show was hilarious for the miming
I've wracked my brain and looked on the web but can't come up with anything for So What's New, other than a Dutch DJ, Ted Bouwens. It sounds as if it should have been the theme for a record review programme like the Round Table or Peter Clayton's show.
Other Alpert tunes were used as themes - It's A Knockout (Bean Bag), The Dating Game (Whipped Cream), and several offshore DJs used them, including Mike Lennox (I'm Getting Sentimental Over You) and Duncan Johnson (Marjorine). _________________ Ron |

It sure was Ron!
It must have been early evening Ron (So What's New) as it was at or around the same time as the song was being played on the radio. I would have been at school so I'm thinking round tea time as Mum would have had the radio on.
Of course it would have been Light Programme days then!

"This Guy's in Love with You" by Herb Alpert is such a lovely song.. it would make my Top 40 songs for sure... don't hear it on Radio 2 that often but it was played the other day and sounded great. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

From what we saw he is a creative, talented and seemingly modest man.
For a company never to have a formal contract drawn up says a lot about the two men involved
The BBC always come up with the goods in these programmes about musical legends
Lovely version of I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face in the second programme of the two.....I think his voice would have been suited to singing that. |

Especially BBC4, which is my favourite BBC TV channel. Sure as hell it will get the chop after the axe on TV channels has been sharpened. |

It does show some great programmes... I was enjoying the Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton concert last night.
I was thrilled to hear them play Jimi's "Voodoo Chile".... the long, live version... very nice. Eric's the man!! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Santa I've never heard of Voodoo Chile
Are they hotter than Habeneros or Scotch Bonnets?
I'll get the ice bucket out now! |

Isn't that from 'Jackson' by Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood. I just love that track. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Herb's This Guy's In Love With You is one of the choices for today's Showstoppers. I've voted so hope it's chosen.
