I just wonder if, to stop us falling into the BBC R2MB trap, we banned the use of certain words?
"Axe" & "Dire" should be banned for starters. You could have an automated system which stops these words being accepted |

It could impair future threads about early Pink Floyd tracks or the merits of Sultans of Swing....
Besides, it might be nice to use them when golden boy slips from his pedestal... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

John can easily add those words to the profanity filter list. It's also possible to automatically substitute them with others. Personally, I really like Pink Floyd's "Careful With That Sharp Implement, Eugene" and the band "Desperate Straits".
Sounds good to me! |

I'd like to think the sort of people attracted to this site can self-moderate their message content well enough without any significant censor tools operating here.
Words mentioned above are ok in normal use, even applied to radio shows. Any excessive behaviour can be dealt with separately as it would be considered spam.
Some of the usual 4-letter words and the like ARE controlled here, so try typing the f word and it comes out: sod
A few permutations of the words are also controlled. Although the words are replaced, the replacement word will often be suitable enough to still convey the meaning intended by the poster.
You can experiment if you like, maybe find some loopholes in our tool _________________ -

I have used some message board where certain words have been replaced with 'beep'.....But this can be overcome by spacing in between letters....eg. 'boobs' could be replaced by 'b o o b s'......
There would have to be a long list of none words to do this _________________ I like hedgehog crisps |

Ha Gilders, yes you've found the loophole as it were.
The tool here only allows selection of single words so b o o b s can't be replaced, well it might be if each letter is a 'word' but I'd have to do most of the alphabet except i and well..... _________________ -

The best tool we have on here is the one that corrects Marko's grammar. I like that. |

Surely if you wanted to ban certain words like dire and axe you could have a programme which bars them when spelled with a small prefix letter but not those versions with a capital prefix letter thus dire straights would be filtered out but not Dire Straights
And the same would apply with axe which would be blocked but not say Axel Rose
I'm no expert so am I right or is this solution just too simple? |

The backend ACP (Admin Control Panel) in phpBB2 doesn't facilitate such a sophisticated approach, unfortunately. It takes a LOT of work. You can experiment with wildcards but I've grappled with it for years in an attempt to block spam posts and other such junk and it's very difficult. |

It's interesting that in the relatively short time I have belonged to and browsed this board, I've seen no rude or spiteful postings as were commonplace on the R2MB (and then by only a few posters, the usual suspects).
I wonder how much of that was due to the unfair moderation, causing frustrated posters to express themselves in extreme language. When provocative posts were made by the chosen few, but replies were removed, the discussion escalated into argument, which rapidly became heated.
This is a much more relaxed and civilised environment.
I've also never seen the word 'sod' on here, so does that mean that no-one has tried posting the f-word?! |

Use of the f word to me is a sign of a lack of proper vocabulary on the part of the user so as everyone is very eloquent on here I very much doubt such a word would ever be appropriate
I think what you said about the Radio 2 board is absolutely spot on
Fair moderation results in fair opinions and a much better atmosphere for all
Please take note Peta! |

Hmm, there's "duck" and then there's "dück" with an umlaut over the "u" (keyboard command Alt+129)
If shifted a couple of letters down the alphabet, would this evade the profanity filter? I have too much respect to try, of course...
Shin (lower front leg and a letter of the Hebrew alphabet) becomes $hin if a dollar sign is used for the S ($hin) but the meaning is still clear...
On edit... yup, that works... _________________ One of the BBC's bad boys, seemingly. |

So let me get this straight......
If the words "axe" & "dire" are to no longer be permitted that must therefore mean there can be no more threads about Chris Evans or Steve Wright?
Sounds like a win-win situation to me _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

Nah. There plenty of alternatives to keep us busy. |
