I'm not one to gush, I'm more a reserved "that was OK " than a "OMG THATSSO TERRIFIC GREAT SMASHING SUPER!!!!!! kinda guy.

At 3.00am this morning 25th September I heard the best hour of radio on the BBC for many an age. Call me easily pleased but Richard Allinson broadcasts to us night owls so professionally and with such a polished delivery, add to that an hour of really stonking tunes and you've got top drawer radio. Rich has really mastered talking to his audience to make them think he's talking to them individually, personally.

If you're a RA fan do yerself a favour and go to listen again. If you're not so much a fan, have a listen just for a great hour of music.

I'm off to listen to the whole 3 hours and d/l it for listening in future.

Recommended! Very Happy

Laughing You're not related to Mark Mayhew by any chance, are you? I don't know if I can stand two Allinson devotees around here Laughing

Richard is the complete, professional, competent DJ/presenter. He could do it in his sleep. Come to think, I think he has been, ever since about 1984.

Have no fear Ron, I'm a lot happier being mischievous and having a moan than being a 'devotee' to anyone. I was just gobsmacked by how good the first hour was and wanted to share. Smile

I record it every week on Sky and listen when I'm ironing. Takes me back to Saturday afternoons when that was my habit.

I love Rich.

I like Richard Allinson, too. Unfortunately, I don't get to listen to him that often these days due to the fact that a clueless Controller has shoved him onto the graveyard shift.

Indeed Colin, RA deserves a much higher profile, judging by his current excellent output but as a denizen of the graveyard and a founding member of his 3.46 Club, I'm delighted to be able to listen live.

It's not much fun through the week with only old 60-a-day croaker Janice for company. Rolling Eyes

The 6 hrs a week of Richard's broadcasts are the best output on Radio 2.

I listen live every week-superb radio entertainment.

Certainly Richard still has a very loyal following.

I like Janice Long. I remember when she had the saturday afternoon slot before Richard Allinson, and she was excellent, so was the music. She deserves to get that lost hour added back on to her current show. And perhaps even being allowed out in the daytime every now and then!!

I like Janice Long too. I suppose she's not discussed much because of her hours.
Two nights ago she played a really good track by Lynnyrd Skynnyrd called Simple Man. How nice to hear one of their songs which isn't Freebird or Sweet Home Alabama, fine songs though they may be.

She plays some great music , it's just the bits inbetween that I don't like.

Thanks for the recommendation to give RA a try, I've done that before and he's not my cup of tea , even at 3am Very Happy

I love Richard, I love Janice. #justsaying (as we'd say on Twitter).

ThisWalkingMan - are you saying you were the first caller on the 3.46 club. In which case I remember you, as I was listening whilst standing in line for check-in at Newcastle airport.

I like Richard Allinson and wish he was back on Saturday afternoons, or still on Radio York at weekends with Allinson's Albums.

Me too. The radio was on whilst I was finishing off the kitchen tiling this afternoon (it's looking good, by the way, folks) and Dermot was waffling on about something-or-other as is his inclination (is he a quiet version of that other waffler Chris Evans??) and I had to resort to saying: "Dermot, shut up. Please."

Bring back Richard Allinson on Saturday afternoons, Mr. Shennan.

Such a pity that Mr. Shennan is deaf.

No, sorry Nick, I have been mentioned on the 3.46 club and at other times but no, not the first. It just feels that I'm part of it 'cos I hear it every week (and because Rich is so skilled he makes the listener feel included).

It wouldn't do for us all to like the same stuff. Janice Long doesn't broadcast to me, I'm not her target audience, there's nothing in common and to my ear she has an awful voice for radio. I understand she is a smoker and it definitely sounds like it. I wasn't aware she'd lost an hour 'cos I don't listen at all. Just my opinion. Embarassed

Anything instead of Dermot please. Saturdays used to be good with CE or SM, now just unlistenable Rolling Eyes

Indeed, we do all like different things. I didn't know Janice was a smoker, but that doesn't matter to me. I used to love her saturday afternoon show as I did when Richard Allinson succeeded her. I'm not sure that she has a 'target audience'. It would surely be the same audience as for Alex Lester even Richards current show. i.e. the night shift & overnight lorry drivers.

I am completely with you on that Angela. Saturday afternoons are like the wilderness years on the radio. Dermot O Dreary on 2 and blessed football on local radio. I have been listening to radio 1 if you believe it for their request show. Oh for the sanctified tones of Richard. He was just so well suited to saturday afternoons and I still can't understand why he is no longer on local radio unless he is just too busy.

I have a habit of waking up really early if there's something playing on my mind, and on weekends I'll catch part of Allinson's programmes.

Re:Janice Long playing Simple Man - it's miraculous that she played a Lynyrd Skynyrd song that wasn't Freebird or Sweet Home Alabama! That Smell and What's Your Name get played on Planet Rock occasionally, but I became aware of That Smell much more through its use on repeats of My Name Is Earl on the E4 channel!

Cheers Dude - I'm going to do exactly that, as I'm stuck here working again today and am fed up of listening to CDs. Like you, I noticed RA's professionalism a long time ago. He's like one of the old school DJs, with his timings, fade outs, talk overs etc - slick as. I'm a fan, although I disagree with those who want him to have a daily show. For me R.A. is at his best doing programmes like Record Producers, and the occasional bit of holiday cover, when his professionalism shows the resident incumbent how it's done. I think it's very telling that he's never been asked to cover for Chris Evans again.

His Saturday afternoon show was 100% perfect for that timeslot and I agree with everyone else here Saturdays have never been the same since it was cast aside to make way for you know who. Stuart Maconie came closest, but for me Richard Allinson, the show format, the music he played, the features - for those 3 hours were just perfect.

I never used to mention this much on the old message board Wink but for anyone who might not know by now Laughing ... I got me oldies played on Steve Wright. I was one of the lucky ones though - as RA was depping that day. My plays were featured for over 40 minutes, 9 tracks played in full and no talking over them or cutting short and lots of mentions of moi and how good my choices were.

So even if he wasn't such a good presenter, I'd still have a soft spot for Richard on that basis alone.
