The scrolling message you get on both DAB and FM is still saying that it's Early Breakfast with Lynn Parsons.

It does show the BBC won't move Janice Long and Alex Lester shows forward. They seem to want to keep hold of Early Breakfast. They couldn't really press release if true - you know who - taking over Radio 2 Early Breakfast in January. It would look stupid. So they are keeping the seat warm with a few cover presenters.

That would seem to support my theory that they want to retain a cosy, fluffy, all right BLAND, and probably feminine, "buffer zone" between Alex and Chris

Does the buffer zone really need to be that long though? Move Alex out to 6am then if they must have a buffer zone, squeeze in the Organist Entertains for half an hour- that should liven things up a bit- anything is better than death by Aled. He's too nice for Radio. Good music this morning though.

You know, that's not a bad idea - The Organist Entertains and Listen To The Band. Nothing like some stirring Wurlitzer and Black Dyke Mills to get the blood pumping first thing in the morning. Wonder what a mash-up of the two would sound like?

Aled's music was good this morning. It varies a lot. His Sunday morning show is good for the music too - you just have to shut your ears to him and the rather heavy-footed spiritual messages and interviews.

It looks like Aled will be doing the show through November, as he's listed for Novemeber 1st. I don't think the person will be announced until before Christmas, who will take the show in the new year.

As I've said before, Aled is touring from mid-November until Christmas, so he won't be available for the early shows.

Am I the only person that thinks Aled Jones is an irritating little gerbil of a broadcaster?

Have a close listen- he brings virtually every subject back around to himself. Failing that, it tends be about famous people he's met and how he used to be a boy soprano. Oh and by the way, he's Welsh- that's another favourite topic to constantly refer to.

Irritating perhaps, but not half as irritating as that hyped-up, over-active twit that follows him at 6.30am!!!

PJ, isn't that the case for all of Bob Shennan's stable of favourites - to go on about themselves at the expense of the music?

Re: the heavy-handed spiritual comments. It would be SO great if they could be followed by something off one of Neal Morse's solo albums. After he quit Spock's Beard for religious reasons, he hasn't been averse to a few heavy-handed spiritual comments of his own. Wink

Sadly, I believe you're right Aviddiva.
Having "Personality" presenters wouldn't be so bad if the "Personalities" actually had some personality to exhibit instead of the repetitive "me, I, mine, I've..." drone we've been lumbered with.

No you aren't. He's pretty safe but a bit dull. Did he do much between being a choir boy and now , he never seems to mention anything ? Rolling Eyes

...and why does he have to speak over the start of records ? Rolling Eyes He has to say something, it's as if they have told him to, and its usually schoolboy humour.

Aled Jones is dull dull dull.

When is his stint over.

Bring in Richard Allinson for a stint.

Is Lynn Parsons still favourite to get the gig full time in 2011.

I find they way he speaks in bursts very annoying. He is known as Mr Squeaky Clean in our house and he irritates us both!
It would be good if Richard Allinson could do a stint as he no longer gets the Evans show to cover. I would be happy to listen to RA or Johnnie Walker all day long.

Richard Allinson deserves better shows than getting up the crack of dawn to present a 90 minute show 5 days a week. I think he's worth more than that.

This is from RadioTonight.co.uk:
http://radiotonight.co.uk/post/1452404093/another-2-weeks-for-aled-jones-on-radio-2

Quote:

We hear Aled Jones is now booked until 12 November to do the 5-6.30am early breakfast weekday slot on Radio 2. He was originally down to cover until the end of October as he’s going on tour this month.

Since his tour doesn’t actually go on the road until 16 November it appears he’s been persuaded to stay on the show for another couple of weeks. There’s still no official word from Radio 2 about who’s going to get the gig permanently to replace Sarah Kennedy…

At the Radio Festival last month, controller Bob Shennan was again asked about the distinct lack of women in his main line-up, especially since Bunty Bagshaw’s departure. Maybe a return to the slot for Lynn Parsons who covered it before taking a 3-month stint as breakfast cover at Smooth Radio? Other names tipped for the gig include Zoe Ball, Liza Tarbuck and Richard Allinson. Radio 2’s latest signing Tony Blackburn’s even been suggested on one of the forums. Well, he does like getting up early….

And as I have said before, according to Aled's website he will be sitting in for Chris Evans 27-31 December.

I hear an hour of Aled while CE is on thanks to my cassette radio recording and I'm quite enjoying the show. It's the first hour so not sure how it all ends up.

As I've been listening during this week I think Aled needs a name change to suit his style and personality....

Pallid Jones

As he's a pale, dull imitation of a decent presenter.

Aled is fantastic broadcaster enjoy his shows. I see Liza Tarbuck is mentioned. She's good on the TV, but she's dull as dishwater on the radio when she's presenting on her own.

Perhaps, but what decent presenters R2 has on its roster seem to be desperately under-utilised these days.

I listen a bit later, from 7.30 thanks to a cassette recording, and I find him quite cheery while I have my breakfast. At least he doesn't seem to rely so heavily from texts as Lynn Parsons does. That is a huge thing in his favour as far I'm concerned.

I saw Aled on the Alan Titchmarsh show on ITV 1, and he said " He wasn't disappointed not getting the Early breakfast show after standing in for 6 weeks". I think getting up at 3.30am every morning wasn't what he wanted.

I'm pleased he did not fancy getting this gig-is it me but he is soooooo boring-he is about as exciting as cold cabbage etc.

Can't understand why Lynn Parsons was not offered the early show.

I don't find Aled boring. I find him very funny and good broadcaster. I would expect this has something either to do with Smooth Radio why lynn hasn't been offered the show, or maybe she didn't want it. I hope she continues at the station.

Neither can I Mark-obviously her face doesn't fit or she doesn't know the right people

She is by far the right person for the job having done it for several weeks at very short notice but that seems to count for nothing with Mr Shennan

Why give the slot to a reliable professional when you can bring in a bumbling celebrity

Lynn has actually been deputising on R2 for quite a number of years now. She regularly deputised for Sarah Kennedy when Dawn Patrol came from the old studio, likewise for Richard Allinson when he had the midweek late night show before Mark Radclifffe got that slot. She also had her own weekend early show which followed on from Bob Harris in the wee small hours of Sunday in the pre Lesley Douglas era.
